It’d be pretty amazing if any of these trees got away without being clawed to hell and back before Kadin was done here. Regardless, now they were done with learning how to claw things up, it was about time they learned how to dodge things that would want to claw them up.
As always, Kadin got out his trusty rocks. This wasn’t a command that Keto would just be able to learn the word for. This was something she’d have to learn how to do through pure, simple, trial and error. And it was time to begin now. Kadin threw a rock towards Keto’s tail, aiming to only skim it and not hit her directly.
He tried to get even closer, scrambling at the bark and the dirt to try and see inside. There was something in there... Then he backed up a little bit to let light into the tree hollow, even though there wasn’t much light to be found in a place like this. There were jars in there. They were full of something round and white and.. colorful. He reared back, hissing in surprise when one of the things rolled around and LOOKED at him.

Of course, she was still pissed off that it seemed like he was trying to hit her at all, but Kadin could live with that. The rock bounced off her tail and landed on the ground. They both stared at it for a bit.
“Right. You need to not let that happen.” Kadin instructed, even though Keto couldn’t understand him at all. And so it began. As always, Kadin started off with aiming for her tail. It was the easiest thing for her to move out of the way if she needed to and all that. He kept aiming at her tail, waiting for her to actually move it out of the damn way so that he wouldn’t hit it.
Those jars were full of eyeballs! The hatchling moved away from the tree hollow, shaking his head and grumbling to himself in distress. That was GROSS. He didn’t want to be part of any of that! He made his way back over to where the human and Keto were, wondering if it was any safer over here. But, when he got closer, he saw that the human was throwing rocks at Keto. So. Maybe. Not safer. Damn it.

Since he clearly couldn’t rely on the adults around here to keep him safe from all the weirds things, Aconite wandered back over to the trees, keeping a wide distance around that one with eyes in the base! He really wanted to find some small, dark place to curl up and defend himself. A nest or a cavern would be perfect, but there wasn’t anything like that out here, unfortunately.
And, slowly but surely, she seemed to learn to do just that. Every time she successfully moved her tail out of the way to dodge the rock, he paused to give her a treat and some praise for a job well done. Every time she did not move out of the way, she got hit with a rock. It was an efficient system.
Once Keto had dodging with her tail down, it was time to move on to her front legs. It was pretty easy to move out of the way of something with your front legs. You had plenty of options. You could reason up, back up, just move your legs out of the way, hop, jump, side step. They were an easy part of the body to move out of the way of projectiles.

Instead, he had to settle for simply wandering around the trees, looking for some place to stay safe. What he didn’t expect was that, during his search, there was movement out of the corner of his eye. Aconite growled, not amused with the tricks of this place! Watch it be another jar of eyes and he was just seeing the light reflected off it! He approached, suspicious, but nothing moved for a long time.
Which is why Kadin did those next. He followed the same formula as before, too, where he’d praise Keto for moving out of the way of a rock and give her a treat. When she got hit, she didn’t get a treat. He kept repeating this with her front legs until she could dodge the rocks every time. Just to make sure she had it down, he kept doing it until she was able to dodge about ten times in a row just to make sure she was able to dodge every time.
Next, Kadin moved on to her wings. Wings were big and bulky and took up a lot of space on a sarane’s back. They had them and were use to them, but they weren’t always as aware of them.

Until, all of a sudden, it was a pumpkin! It was weird to see a pumpkin here among all the dead leaves. He growled at it, circling the pumpkin, suspicious of it since it was so out of place among the leaves and the trees. And it seemed as if he was right to be suspicious. Because once he start getting closer, close enough to sniff at the pumpkin to check and see if it was dangerous, it moved! Oh heck no!
Not as parts of their body that were immediately in front of them all the time. Kadin targeted the wings next because they’d be easier to move out of the way, but only once the sarane got used to actually thinking about their wings. So he did the same thing as he did with the tail and front legs. He kept throwing rocks, well. He kept throwing pebbles at her wings. After all, the wings were more delicate than other parts of her body. He didn’t want to risk tearing the membranes. So he kept throwing smaller rocks and pebbles at her wings. He rewarded her when she dodged and she got hit when she wasn’t able to dodge.

So THAT was what had been moving around! With a hiss of surprise, Aconite scrambled back at the pumpkin shakily got up onto its vines as if they were feet! It tottered there for a moment or two before taking a shaky step in his direction. No way! He wasn’t going to stick around for this! Aconite ran away from the pumpkin as it waved its vines and wobbled its head in his direction, not willing to get caught up in whatever the heck was going on here!
Over time, she was eventually able to dodge with her wings just as reliably as she was able to dodge with her tail and front legs.
Next up were her back legs. Since the back legs supported much of her body weight, it was much more difficult to dodge with them than with other parts of the body. That’s why Kadin saved them for last, since it would be more of a trial on the sarane. He threw rocks at her back legs, getting her up and moving. Just like with all the other times, he rewarded her with treats and praise when she successfully dodged. When she did not successfully dodge, of course, she got hit with a rock.

He ran back towards the human and the hen, of course, because surely he’d be more safe with them than out here on his own! But just as he was about to reach them, he tripped and fell head over tail on something hard. He grumbled to himself, getting up on shaky legs, to look around and try to find what had tripped him. There, a little ways back, was something dark sticking out of the leaves.
Kadin kept this up until she was successfully dodging with her back legs every time. He made sure she could dodge at least 10 times in a row before it was time to move on to the next bit.
Now, there was no telling where Kadin would throw. He wasn’t aiming at one specific part of her body anymore. He started throwing rocks at any part of her, with no warning. Keto had to learn how to sense where the attack was coming from in order to dodge successfully. This meant that she couldn’t know where she was going to be attacked from, she just had to sense it. So Kadin kept throwing rocks, aiming at a random part of her body or even missing her entirely on purpose.

He cautiously went over to it, eyeing it with heavy suspicious before finally getting close enough to see what it was. It looked like glass? But glass that was deep and dark and hard to see into. He poked at it with his claws, growling a bit at it just in case it had any idea of trying to do something scary! But it seemed like it was just glass, laying there in the leaves. That was, until something INSIDE the glass swirled around to look at him.
That was in order to help her develop a sense for where an attack was coming from and how to dodge it. Of course, this was more difficult than before because she didn’t know where the attack was coming from. She didn’t know what to expect. But just like before, she eventually picked it up. Kadin kept throwing rocks until she was able to reliably dodge them every time. He made sure that she was able to dodge the attacks at least ten times in a row before calling this training over. Once they finally hit that mark, he figured that he’d probably be able to take her to the pit to fight just like he had with Annona.

They had left for a little while and then came back. And, let’s just say, Aconite was pleased at the change. After only being gone for a short amount of time the young drake had been worried about returning to the same thing. Dead trees, spooky things in bottle lurking around every corner, and all manner of horrors waiting to jump out at him! But now they were back and everything looked… green?
Unsatisfied with how her training had gone before, Kadin brought Keto back to brush up on danger sense some more. She seemed grumpy about it, especially when she saw the rocks in her hand, snorting at him when he looked like he was about to start using them. But Kadin only gave her a flat look.
"You need to get this." He tried to reason with her, chucking a rock that ended up sailing harmlessly over her head. She ducked with a hiss and then growled when another rock bounced off her rump. "See? That's why we're back here. You're getting lazy." Kadin complained. And, with that, he started throwing more rocks in earnest. Like before, he mostly aimed for her extremities, places that would be easier to dodge with.

It was a bit strange. The air was still cold, chilly, even. It was hard for a creature so small, without the benefit of fur, feathers, or fat to keep warm. But all around them was lush green, as far as Aconite could see. He was almost excited to get exploring, considering that the land was so much different than it had been a short while ago. What could have changed it? Why had it all changed so much?
Once Keto seemed better at dodging there, he started aiming for the bits that were harder to dodge with. Her rump, her belly, her wings. She got hit more than he would have liked to see, especially considering that she could see the attacks coming, but she did eventually start to dodge them more often than not. Once he felt like she was getting use to it, he stopped, only to start up again once her back was turned. This time he hit her dead on, nailing her on the shoulder. Keto spun around with a growl, wings raised in warning, but Kadin only shrugged as if nothing had happened. With a grumble she turned away. Only to flinch out of the way when they next rock barely clipped her wing.

Aconite started wandering, curious to see what all he could find around here. There were different scents, too, even though this was the same place they'd been not long ago, he was SURE of it. Nothing even smelled the same, though! Maybe they'd come some place different instead?
"Good." Kadin encouraged her, offering her a treat. "That's better. You need to be aware even when you can't see it coming." He said, as if she could understand him. Of course, she couldn't, and her attention eventually turned elsewhere, tuning him out. So Kadin started the process up all over again. Whenever Keto's back was turned, he chucked a rock at it. At first, he hit her more often than she dodged. But, just like before, the longer it went on the more reliably she was able to dodge the rocks, even the ones that she didn't see coming. Kadin kept her practicing, throwing more and more rocks whenever her back was turned. He was sure to give her a treat every time she did dodge successfully. Eventually, she seemed to be able to develop that second sense she needed to dodge the rocks reliably. That was when he finally let her rest.

For a bit of a change of pace, Kadin decided to head over to the mansion next to work with his houluh some more. It was different here than the last time he had been here, what with last time being in the fall and now being spring. Everything in the mansion was bright and strangely welcoming and oddly pastel. Kadin wasn’t sure if he trusted it just yet considering how he knew how it typically looked in the fall months. But for now he was going to deal with whatever he had to deal with as it was because he was here to train his houluh not to just sight see. First off he wanted to teach Pepper and Tex how to just be relaxed, just like how he’d taught Skip not all that long ago. Since there’s always so much going on in the mansion he thought this was a good place to teach just that. He wanted both of the houluh to be able to know that, when given the command, they could calm down and easy to work with. He didn’t want anything to be able to interrupt them while they were being calm like that. In addition to that, he also had Jude running around to provide extra distraction while he was working with Pepper and Tex.
Since Kadin had brought Jude here as a distraction, Jude was left off leash while Pepper and Tex were both on leash. Jude was free to explore all over the place and, boy oh boy.
