Eventually, they'd be able to move on to holding it for up to five seconds. Then ten seconds. Then fifteen, twenty. Until Kadin would be able to get them to hold the gourds for a full minute before releasing them with a "drop it". That was probably good enough. If they could hold it for a minute with their tiny puppy attention spans, he was sure they could do it for longer. But he kept repeating with different time intervals just in case. He also decided to ask them to hold it and then walked away a bit. That would also be a good test. That way he'd know they could hold the command even if he wasn't there the whole time. Each time, he'd ask them to drop it after they'd held it for long enough. The pups did get used to the gourds, even if the gourds got horribly slimy from being held so much in dog mouths. Regardless, Kadin would ignore the drool and keep practicing until he was satisfied that they had this trick down. Hold, praise, wait, drop, praise and treats. On and on again, repeating until they got it down. But now that they did get it, they'd be about to move on to something new.

But first? It was time to explore a little. Kadin and the pups abandoned their training gourds, as slobbery as they were, and took a walk through the field. Kadin didn't want to get too far from the door in case they got turned around so they couldn't keep walking forever, but they could still explore most of the area. The pups also enjoyed the chance to run around. They were so young still and so full of energy. Kadin didn't know how he was going to keep up with them once their legs were longer. He wouldn't literally be able to keep up with them, of course, not that he wouldn't try. But once they were older there was also so much more that he could teach them. Or maybe he'd just keep them around and let them run and play. It was kinda nice having pets that weren't focused on fighting. Instead, he could teach them all the tricks that most of his other creatures didn't know in favor of battle moves. One day he might also train one his sarane as a show pet instead, just to see if it could be done. Wouldn't that wow the crowds?

While they were walking along, the houluh pups suddenly yipped at something. Curious, Kadin followed after them, not bothering to try and recall them from whatever it was they were running at. They'd been so good so far, listening to what he wanted them to do, he figured they deserved a chance to run around and find some mischief for themselves. Eventually they came across what looked to be a scarecrow or maybe a puppet? It was just sitting there in the pumpkin field just laying there doing nothing. The pups ran around it, barking and wagging their tails as if they thought it was something alive, maybe even a person. Kadin rolled his eyes at their antics and walked over to scatter them around. There was more random junk around it so he figured it wouldn't hurt to collect it all. There were plenty more of those weird eye marbles he kept finding. Some... grapes? On a stick? He was glad he got that before the pups tried to eat it. Another of those flowers. And, finally, he picked up the puppet guy and added him to the rest of his loot in his bag. There you go. More stuff.

Well, now that they'd taken a bit of a break, it was probably time to teach something else. Kadin hummed to himself, wondering what to do next. He'd done so many of the basics so far, it wouldn't hurt to knock some more of them out of the way. They knew sit, they knew come, stay... Oh! Kadin knew what to do next.
He went over to the pups, sitting back down in front of them. They wagged their tails, Dodge going in to nose at his hands and Miles yipping in excited. They knew what that meant next. More treats!
True to what they expected, Kadin held out a treat. He held it right in front of Miles' nose and slowly began bring it down to the ground. The pup whines and try to get the treat, but it kept going lower and lower and lower. Eventually, it was on the ground, and he crouched forward to get it. But it kept moving away! He plopped down, reaching to try and get the treat and- "Good! Good down, Miles! Good!" He got the treat!
Kadin shook his head and turned to Dodge. "You're up." And he repeated the same thing.

Kadin held the treat in front of Dodge's nose. He slowly had the treat go down. It passed his chest, his legs, and eventually was right by the ground, Dodge's nose following it all the while. Then Kadin slowly moved the treat away from him. Frustrated, Dodge lifted his head and moved to stand, but Kadin stopped him. "Sit, Dodge." He told him. Dodge sat. And Kadin started again. He had the treat go down his legs, towards the ground, stretching away. Dodge was supposed to be sitting! He wasn't supposed to get up! So he slowly went down to the floor to try and get at the treat! Once he way laying down, "Good Down, Dodge! Good boy!" He got the treat!
Time to go back to Miles. Kadin tried the same thing with him, but he was way too excited this time. He got up once the treat was starting to move away and tried to nom at the treat. "Miles, Sit." Kadin reminded him. Miles whined and sat down and then Kadin tried again, slowly having the treat go down and stretching in front. As Miles was going down, Kadin said, "Down, Miles." He needed to get them used to the words.

And the moment Miles was all the way down, "Good Down Miles! Good boy!" Praise and treats. Time for Dodge again.
He repeated the same thing, holding the treat in front and slowly having it go down. Dodge knew better than to get up from his sit this time, so he just whined and followed the treat. "Down, Dodge." Kadin told him as the treat was making the pup move down. Slowly but surely, Dodge sank to the ground. "Good Down, Dodge! Good boy!"
Annnd time to repeat again. He did the same thing with Miles, telling him to sit first before repeating the same practice. When they started he told him Down, slowly did the motion with the treat, and once he was down he got his praise and treat. "Good, Miles! Good down!"
And back to Dodge. He told him to sit first, too, since he didn't want any problems again. "Down, Dodge." And slowly walked him down with the treat. The moment his belly hit the dirt, "Good, Down Dodge!" He got his praise and treats.
Ah, the repetition. The mainstay of training. Kadin repeated the same thing several times more, wanting to make sure they both got it down before he moved on.

Kadin repeated the same thing until they were starting to go down even before he started walking them down with the treat. Pleased by this, he still kept repeating it for a bit, until he figured he could ask them to go down without having to hold the treat in front of their noses.
"Down, Dodge." He said, making a down motion with his hand. Dodge leaned forward, as if to follow his hand again, before plotting down on the ground, panting happily. "Good, Dodge! Good down." Kadin told him, giving him his treat.
"Down, Miles." Kadin said, repeating the same gesture he'd used for Dodge. Miles stood up, thinking he needed to go over to Kadin to follow the treat. "Sit, Miles." But instead he sat, tilting his head and watching Kadin. Kadin made the same gesture again, but this time closer to Miles, as if he was going to have the treat go down his body. "Down, Miles." He repeated. This time he got it, sliding down into the dirt with a yip. "Good, Miles! Good down!" Kadin said, pleased that they were getting this far. He gave Miles his treat, too, and thought about what he could do next.

Although, honestly? The answer was obvious. "Down, Dodge." Motion, Dodge goes down, praise, treat. "Down, Miles." Motion, Miles goes down, praise, treat. Kadin kept repeating this over and over until he didn't need to have his hand right in front of them for them to get that he was asking them to go down. Repetition. Still the name of the game. He kept repeating the same thing, over and over, until he was confident that they had it while he was sitting right in front of them. But could they do it while he was standing?
Kadin stood up and went to ask the pups the same thing. "Down, Miles." He said, making the gesture. Miles was confused, sitting but unsure what to do. Kadin leaned down a bit to get more on his level. "Down." He said, making the gesture. This time both Dodge and Miles laid down, clearly getting the gist and wanting their treats. Kadin laughed at that and did reward them both. They DID both go down. Then he kept asking them down a couple times more while he was standing so he was sure that they got it. He didn't want to have to sit down every time he asked them this.

Well, now that they'd worked on lay down, they might as well do something fun. Kadin crouched down this time and asked both the pups to lay down. Then he held the treats out in front of them, at the same time, and slowly had it move away from their bodies. Dodge whined, but stayed in his place, eyes glued on the treat. Miles immediately stood up and went to follow after. Kadin rolled his eyes. This one was probably going to day a while.
"Down, Miles." He said, wondering if he should just focus on one of them at a time. He held the treat in front of Dodge again. Then, he slowly moved it forward. Dodge stretched his neck out then started wiggling forward a bit, trying to follow after the treat. Kadin immediately praised him for it. "Good, Dodge! Good job!"
Kadin tried it again with Miles. He whined and also tried to get at the treat. He went to get up again, but Kadin reprimanded him with a "Down, Miles." Miles went back down and whined louder. He wanted the treat! He reached his neck out as far as it could go! Then he started wiggling forward, just a bit!

"Good, Miles! Good boy!" He praised, glad that he was finally starting to get it. Now back to Dodge.
He had him go down and slowly put the treat in front of him again. Dodge whined and moved to get up. "Down, Dodge." Kadin reminded him. Dodge flopped back down dramatically and stretched out his neck, reaching for the treat. Kadin put it close to him again then slowly moved it away again. This time Dodge wiggled forward, following it. "Good, Dodge! Good boy!" Kadin praised and gave him the treat. Back to Miles.
He had the treat in front of it, slowly moving it forward. Miles stretched his paws out after it, clawing at the treat, but Kadin just waited and ignored him. Finally Miles reached his nose forward again, following the treat, and started wiggling forward. "Good, Miles! Good boy!" Kadin praised and gave him the treat.
He kept doing that with the two of them, going between them. He wasn't even worried about them responding to a command right now, to be honest. All he wanted was for them to get the motion he was trying to get them to do, which was crawling forward. And that was going to take a while.

Kadin kept repeating the same thing until the houluh would reliably wiggle forward when he had the treat in front of them. They were getting the hang of what he was asking of them now, so it was time for him to see if he could get them to move forward further distances. He kept doing the same thing, holding the treat in front of them, but this time instead of stopping after they wiggled forward a bit, he waited until they started to move forward more. He waited until they actually moved their legs to move forward a bit instead of just wiggling there, not really going anywhere. He wanted them to actually crawl!
So he held the treat in front of Dodge, holding it right in front of him, watching him wiggle, until he used his legs to push forward. "Good, Dodge! Good boy!" Now for Miles.
He held the treat in front of him, letting him wiggle around with the treat right out of his grasp, until he started to use his legs to push forward. "Good, Miles! Good job!" Kadin praised right away.
Now it was time to repeat this one until they got it down.

And they still had more work to do after that.
Kadin kept holding the treat in front of them, waiting until they started to use their legs to move forward before he'd reward them. He repeated this several more times, shuffling back while he got the pups to crawl forward. They only went a few inches at first, but he'd stop and praise them each time. Soon he was able to tempt them to move forward a foot. Then a few feet. Pretty soon, if he was going slow enough, he was able to get the pups to follow him while he awkwardly crab-walked backwards with treats in front of their noses. It was a good thing he was doing this with no one else around because it would be really fucking embarrassing if anyone could see him shuffling around like this. But Kadin didn't care. He just wanted the pups to get this down so that he could move on to the next thing.
So he kept repeating it. Holding the treats in front of their noses and slowly moving back while they followed him. He kept going until he was sure they would do it reliable without getting up, despite some set backs, they were doing well.

Alright. What Kadin wanted to do next? Get them used to the command word. This time, when he had them lay down and held the treat in front of them, he said, "Hit the deck!" And slowly started moving forward again, just like before.
They pups were a bit confused since they hadn't heard the word before, but they saw Kadin with the treat and the slowly moving forward and they were used to THAT so they started following him like usual. He stopped them after only a few inches since they were practicing the word now, praising them for their good work. "Hit the deck!" He said again, tempting them forward.
Again, he only made them go forward a few inches before rewarding them. "Hit the deck!" Same thing. Treats in front of them, slowly having them move forward a few inches, stop, praise.
"Hit the deck!" Same thing again. Treats down, a few inches, stop, praise.
Kadin kept repeating this same thing, several more times, to get them used to the words. He repeated all the same motions he was doing before, just having them listen to and get used to the command word first. He probably did it at least half a dozen times.

Once he was relatively sure they were used to the command word, he tried using only it. Well, it and he started slowly moving back, no treats in his hand. Since he was using all the same motions and they knew he still had treats, they followed perfectly fine to just "Hit the deck!" They got praise and treats for that.
He did the same thing again, telling them "Hit the deck!" and moving slowly forward with no treats in his hands. They followed him still, moving forward a couple feet before he gave them praise and treats for a job well down. He repeated this same thing a couple more times before moving on to the next part.
Kadin got down with them. He laid down in between the puppies and said "Hit the deck!" He crawled forward a little bit, gesturing for them to do the same with a hand in front of their faces. Miles thought it was a new game at first. He stood up, tail wagging, but Kadin quickly told him to "Down." Miles plopped back down and got a "Good boy!" for his trouble, then another "Hit the deck!" As Kadin crawled forward a little and gestured for them to do the same.
