It was another fine morning at the Bed and Breakfast. Or, well, Seveth thought so, anyway. The fact that he had clients had to be a good thing, right? It must have gone out by word of mouth, since he hadn't really gotten around to putting ads up like he meant to. As soon as that Rho fellow had vacated, another of the big purple fellows had taken up residence. She wasn't quite so unfriendly, which was nice to see; they had a little conversation here and there, and she even seemed to approve a little of his interest in their magic. "There is a library here," she began, and didn't even get to finish her sentence before Seveth was beaming broadly at her. Laughing, she said, "You want to go?" "Do you even have to ask?" Seveth replied. "When can we leave?" Now he was finally getting somewhere with this!

Another day, another lecture. As always, Zarkun had arrived at the library far in advance so that he could spend some time preparing before the lecture started. First, he stopped by the cafe to grab a bowl of his favorite tea. When he approached the counter, he saw that the bowl was already waiting for him. "You're too kind," he said softly as he dropped a few shiny baubles into the tip jar. If he had to guess, an entire half of those were from him. It had been a slow week for the library. Zarkun scooped up his tea and brought it into his lecture room. He left the door open behind him and curled up behind the desk. He spread out some papers across the floor and started to shuffle them into order based on what he wanted to talk about that day. A study on pollination and pollenators? How pigments interact with ultraviolet light? Magical crystals and their interactions with people?

Honestly, this was already shaping up to be so much nicer than his time with Rho. That guy had been stoically silent the whole time. Reminded Seveth of someone else he knew.
Though, then again, considering the things San did say when he bothered to say them - or rather, to write them - maybe that was to be preferred, actually.
"Tvisha, was it?" Seveth said. "You know, I like you. I think you and I are going to be great friends." He grinned at her, and she huffed a laugh, which reminded him so well of Ichaival that he felt his heart warm, though he knew Ichaival was probably thinking disapprovingly of his being here even as they spoke.
"Come on then. Linyu, was it?" She strode toward the mouth of the cave, and Seveth followed. She checked her stride so that he could keep up while he trotted alongside her.

Zarkun pushed the papers around on the floor as if that would help him figure out what he wanted to do. He was going to have to pick something soon, but nothing was standing out to him. He started to feel a bit of panic creep in until he glanced up at the clock and realized it was earlier than he thought. There was still plenty of time to sort things out. He breathed a sigh of relief and took a little break to sip his tea and clear his head.
A little time to relax was all he needed, apparently. Zarkun knew what he wanted to do. He shuffled all of the pages back together and slid them into his bag, leaving out the parts that were relevant to his chosen topic. Then he headed back out into the library to grab a couple of books that he might need for reference, or even just for fun. Good books always came in handy.

Wonderfully considerate of her to do it. So much so that he was willing to forgive the fact that she had pronounced the name wrong. Almost.
Well, it wasn't like he was the one who cared, but it was just that San had made him practice it so many times to get it right... "Actually," said Seveth, "it's Linyü." With the tones and everything. "It's a bit tough, you know, we don't have that vowel in Common..."
"We really don't," Tvisha agreed. "I'll probably mangle it again, I'm afraid."
There was nothing he could really say in the face of that, was there? Not fair of him to hold her at gunpoint and make her repeat the damn name til he got it right. "Don't worry about it," he said, and almost meant it. "So, how far away is this library, anyway? Are we going to be walking for too long?"

The modest library was continuing to grow with every passing day. Even if it wasn't yet the biggest collection the city had to offer, Zarkun could still become lost among the shelves. He was immensely proud of everything they had accomplished, even though his own part in it was relatively small. As he was lost in thought, he wandered right past the section he meant to visit and into an area he didn't recognize as well.
"Hmm," he said, opening a book on a nearby table and ruffling through the pages. He looked up at the clock again and decided that he had enough time to take a look. Still, he nervously glanced over his shoulder as if he was about to be caught doing something naughty. He wrapped his claws around the stray book and shuffled off into a comfortable corner to check it out. As long as he didn't lose track of time, everything would be totally fine.

Tvisha laughed, a sort of rumbling huff-huff of breath, not at all unlike Ichaival. Indeed, Seveth felt that his upbringing had disposed him uniquely to thrive here. Never had he seem so many individuals in one place that reminded him of his old nurse, though none of them spoke to him in thoughts. Which was probably for the best, to be honest.
"Unfortunately for you, yes," said Tvisha. "It's a bit of a walk. But we'll make good time if we hurry."
"Ohhhh no," said Seveth, shaking his head. "I know what that means, and I'm not running!" Tvisha laughed again, which was nice, but Seveth hoped she knew he wasn't joking. Maybe San would have enjoyed something like that, but what little Seveth knew of San's tastes seemed to verge on the masochistic, and Seveth had no desire to define his own life that way, thank you very much.

Zakrun didn't usually read books like this, but this one was enthralling in a way he could not describe. It was a polished journal from an adventurer who had spent a lot of time in the canyons under the city. Zarkun found the trials and tribulations of the human and her gargoyle utterly fascinating. There was something utterly charming about the way humans did things, he thought. He would really have to get to know more of them.
As he came across a word he did not know, he put a bookmark on that page and went to find another book to explain it. This happened a few times, as his knowledge of gemstones and human mining techniques wasn't so great. Eventually, he had a whole little stack of reference books that described kinds of stones and other odd things he had come across in the journal. Some of those books were fascinating by themselves, and he found himself lost in one explanation after another.

Tvisha made some starts to fake him out, but thankfully she had mercy on him and his comparatively shorter human legs. Given that those human legs were even shorter than he had been used to, he was forced to be glad for this - though he had never been much of a runner, excepting those times when he had been forced, by circumstances completely outside his control of course, to flee for his life.
Running, suffice to say, did not bring back good memories for him.
Thus it was verging into the afternoon when they did finally arrive at the library. The places here were built along proportions better suited to their dragon residents than the scant human visitors. Seveth felt it distinctly every so often, and he felt that again now, standing in front of the entrance archway, built to accommodate dragons even bigger than Tvisha. The size of that big brown one he had seen last week, for example.

'Diamonds are created deep within the earth, under intense pressure and heat.' Zarkun was surprised at how specific and complicated the conditions for the creation of various types of stone and gems were. The world just churned away, making diamonds underneath tons of rock. It was all so interesting and strange. Zarkun wondered if the high levels of magic in the area had something to do with the relative abundance of gems in the mines under the city. It couldn't all be the efforts of centuries-long geological processes, could it?
Zarkun wandered then over to a section about magic, hoping the answer to his hypothesis would be there. It was then that he caught a glimpse of the clock. Time had gotten away from him, and he was late to his own lecture! He reluctantly dropped the books he was looking at the back onto a sorting cart and ran off toward his lecture room.

Who had that been, anyway? Rho never did deign to tell him, though it was clear from the way the two interacted that they had been acquainted. And it wasn't for a lack of effort on Seveth's part to find out either; he had peppered Rho with questions when Rho came back, and Rho had rebuffed them all with silence, as was his habit, apparently.
... Well. Strictly speaking it really wasn't any of his business, and it wasn't like it mattered now.
"That's a pretty big library you've got here," he said, which was, of course, an understatement.
"It's been here for hundreds of years. So I hear, anyway. I don't come here often," said Tvisha. Neither of them had gone in, though other Draconics had no such reservations; a total of five or six had slipped in or out of the door in the short while that the two of them had stood there.

Zarkun skidded to a stop just outside of his lecture room. He was expecting the room to be full of cranky students, but there was no one there. Just his piles of paperwork from before and empty seats. Zarkun looked up at the clock again. Had he made a mistake about what time it was? No, it was the right time for the lecture to have started. Something else was going on.
Zarkun wandered back out of the room with a confused look on his face. Had everyone already left, angry that the lecture hadn't started on time? He wasn't that late, so that seemed unlikely. He frowned and went off to see if he could figure it out. Perhaps one of the Tat-lung who lived here might have seen something. Zarkun yet again disappeared among the shelves of books to see if he could sort it out. All he had to do now was not get distracted by any more books...

Seveth blinked at Tvisha. "You don't?" he said, surprised.
Tvisha shook her head. "Don't read," she said. "Never bothered to learn. But they offer lectures here too, sometimes."
"Let's just go to one of those," Seveth said quickly.
"Are you sure?" Tvisha looked down at him. "It might not be on magic, you know. This place is for general use. You might end up watching a presentation on uses for cave fungus."
Seveth wrinkled his nose. "Well, I have to admit, I don't know of any uses for cave fungus, so it'd be enlightening if nothing else." When Tvisha didn't look convinced, he shrugged. "I can come back and look at books any time, right? But you're here today, so we might as well do something together! What kind of host would I be if I let you chaperone me around?"
Tvisha laughed again. "Alright then," she said. "Lecture hall's this way. I don't know where anything else is, but I know that much."

A long silvery blue tail hung down from one of the shelves. Just the thing he was looking for. Zarkun cleared his throat loudly and looked up toward the top of the shelf. "Do you know anything about this?" Zarkun said, waving his tail in the general direction of his empty lecture hall. Shaiko rolled and twisted over himself so that it was his head, not his tail, that was facing Zarkun now. Wordlessly, he pointed to a sign sitting outside of the room. In hastily scribbled common it read 'Lecture Postponed.'
"What? How? I didn't... oh dear," Zarkun muttered to himself. His mind began to race with the possibilities. Had someone else cancelled the lecture on his behalf? Had he forgotten something important? Did he even look at that sign before he went into the room this morning? For all he knew, it could have been there all day, meaning that everyone who saw it would probably have just left without a second thought. Oh dear indeed.
