This was probably a familiar story by now. Kadin was going through his kennel and he found a pet. This one was different than the other ones he'd see. Quiet, staying off on her own in a corner. Not really interacting with anyone. As he came closer, he noticed that she was actually surrounded by small creatures that sort of looked like her, sleeping. He didn't want to disturb them, so he'd left. And he'd researched. He hadn't seen creatures like her before in his kennels, but she was a pretty common creature in the labs. A lotine. In his research, he read up on how lotine could produce small creatures, probably the ones that he had seen with her. And you did that at the breeding center. So? Here he was, at the breeding center, with a lotine in tow and still not really sure what he was doing here.

Thankfully the receptionist sorted him out pretty quick. She walked him through the process and gave him forms to fill out and sign. He'd never filled out so many god damn forms in his life, but since coming to the labs? He was becoming something of an expect on them. Once that was done, he walked back into one of the specialized rooms with his lotine. It was more than a bit of a relief when he walked in to find a clean, clear pool in the middle of the room. It didn't have the big pile of toys or cat tower like the pachee room had. It also didn't have the same aspects as that room with the dragon oaks. He wasn't sure how they had the space for it, but this place seemed to be able to generate specialized rooms for different species, all available when needed. It was pretty cool.

"Alright, uh, Trinity?" Kadin looked down at the lotine. He name had been on a plaque near where she stayed in the kennels. Most of the creatures had them. That was the only way he could find out so many of their names, really. "I'm not sure what you, uh, need here. But if you do anything, just come get me?" He didn't know why he was so nervous to be along in this room with a friendly creature he had never met before that he'd brought here so it could produce offspring and- oh. Maybe that was why.
Kadin sighed and shook his head at himself, walking over to sit on a bench that seemed to have been placed in the room for this very purpose. He didn't know why he was such a disaster about all of this. It wasn't new that all of this was strange and foreign to him.

He should be used to feeling lost by now. It wasn't even as bad as when he first got here. He mostly knew how everything ran and he'd even visited most of the most popular spots in his short time here. He needed to stop being so hard on himself for all this shit, but there was a nagging feeling in the back of his mind that this was all just... so wrong. Somehow. He didn't get-
A shadow detached itself from under the bench he was sitting on and formed by his side. If he didn't look at it too closely, it almost looked like there was someone sitting next to him, elbows on their knees.
Right. That was why.
Trinity watched the human on the bench for a short moment. He didn't seem to be doing anything particularly interesting, just sitting there and thinking. So she figured it wasn't worth interacting with him.

With a flick of her tail, she made her way over to the water. That would be a much more pleasant application of her time and seemed more like what she was here to do anyway. She slipped into the cool, sweet, clear water and closed her eyes, enjoying the embrace on her body. Truth be told, she preferred living ponds. Ones with a little muck and algae, flower petals floating on the surface, grass growing on the banks. But this would do just fine for her purposes. She could relax here and enjoy something like peace, as long as the human's mood festering like a storm cloud in the corner didn't attempt to ruin it for her.
The longer Kadin sat there and tried to pretend the shadow didn't exist, the more apparent it became that it wasn't going away any time soon. It was just sitting there next to him.

It didn't even want anything! The other ones always seemed to go about their own path. They honestly didn't even seem to know he was there, going about their own business or having their interest pulled on by whatever he was looking at. This one, though? This one he felt like eyes were on him. It felt sad. Lonely. Or maybe he was just projecting on it. It was a fucking SHADOW it wasn't even actually THERE. This was all just in his head and he needed to start ignoring it right fucking now before he went insane with it.
Trinity splashed around in the pond, floating here and there. She thought longingly of her gardens and her friends. She could still see her friends whenever she wanted, of course, but it was not the same. It was not the same when they were in the cold, hard kennels. No growing things.

No pachee running through flowers, scattering their pollen and the flowers' in the air. Not vinesnatcher lurking in the shadows or dragon oaks fluttering around the trees. No small creatures running underfoot, trying to jump over her tail and hitch a ride when she went swimming in the pond. No girl with a wide brimmed hat laughing and running with them all. She wanted to be back in her gardens. But now all she had way this human. This boy, really, and he didn't seem like he knew what he was doing much at all. He went on adventures, sure, but he lived in the kennels, too, and hadn't set foot in the gardens. She would have smelt it on him, but all he smelled like was deep dark things and crazy magic. If only she could communicate her desires with him, if only he understood her needs. She sighed, blowing bubbles.

There must be some way for her to get him to see what he was missing out on. The gardens were beautiful, especially at this time of year, and it hurt to miss out on the harvest just because he had not ventured to that part of the labs before. In fact, it also wouldn't hurt for him to venture to his homes, either. The last time she was in the kennels she remembered them being MUCH more empty due to many of the creatures actually having another place to live. But how to get that across to a human?
Kadin closed his eyes and tried to ignore the shadow, but he could still feel it there. One side of his body was colder than the other. The hair on his arm was also standing on end, tingling and causing him to hold his breath. They didn't have to be here too long.

He could hold on for a little while longer. The shadow was distracting, but giving his lotine this time to herself was more important. Right? Kadin took in a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying to calm his racing heart. This would probably be easier if he'd gotten enough sleep last night, but it had been another restless one. Why did all the shit seem to hit the fan at once for him? Every fucking time?
Trinity splashed her tail in the water, hard and loud. She didn't like the look of the human. He looked like someone was hurting him and here, where it was just the two of them, that could not be happening. Sometimes creatures in the kennels DID hurt him, but she was not one of them. And even when that did happen, she did not see him looking like this at those times. She did not like it.

Kadin finally opened his eyes and stood up. He couldn't take this any longer. In fact? He wouldn't. He walked away from the bench and over to the pool, sitting down next to it and watching the lotine in the water. At least she seemed to be having a better them than he was. The shadow did not move from the bench. He wouldn't have been able to explain how he knew it, but he could feel it in his bones that it was still sitting there, watching him. Even though it didn't have eyes.
Trinity swam over to him, nuzzling his hand with her snort and looking up at him with large eyes. His looked haunted. She didn't like that. She splashed in the water a bit more, as if to make a point, almost huffy with him for looking so glum. Kadin managed to give her a smile. He'd have to work on that.
