There was a first time for everything, right? That was how Sevyrn had found herself waiting behind the curtains at her very first houlou salonne just days after she had finally finished with Sweetie's training and brought her down here for the first time. The matronne waited patiently at Sevyrn's side, seemingly unaware of the woman's anxiety, until Sev got the cue to walk on - okay, it was her turn. This was... intimidating, but hopefully the crowd wouldn't be able to tell that she lacked confidence about being here at all. "Follow me," she said to Sweetie as she made her way to center stage with the matronne at her side, feigning some kind of confidence despite the ball of anxiety building in her throat. They reached center stage and Sevyrn pointed towards Sweetie with her whole hand, palm open. "Blinding Lights Kennel's Ice Cream Sandwich, a new girl on the block with plenty of potential," she announced, before it was time to get doing. This show was about displaying smarts and admittedly Sweetie didn't know very much advanced stuff - but she sure excelled in knowing a lot of little things. Sevyrn was planning to take advantage of the houlou's wide range of knowledge.
"Sweetie, stay," Sevyrn directed before stepping back away from her - once she'd reached the other side of the stage, demonstrating Sweetie's ability to listen to commands, she told the pup to come. As soon as the pair met again, she directed Sweetie follow her and took a walk back to center stage side by side. Once there she ordered the pup to sit and then shake her paw, followed by moving straight in to roll over seamlessly. None of this was incredibly difficult, yet Sevyrn hoped that Sweet's wide variety of knowledge would help just a little bit. Once the matronne had finished rolling over she popped straight back to her feet.
"One last thing, Sweet-" Sevyrn said, pulling a ball out of her pocket. "Fetch!" She gently tossed it and the pup caught the ball-mid air before returning to Sev's feet and letting the ball rest right in front of her. With that Sevyrn had finished up her planned demonstration, and bowed to the audience before holding her arms out to bring attention to the happy pup who sat patiently at her side.
[Sweetie demonstrates responding to her name, stay, come, follow, sit, shake, lay down and fetch. Done.]

Arvest, Natural's Bring on Autumn Level: 15 Loyalty: 30 Stamina: 2 Strength: 2 Resistance: 1 Dexterity: 5 Mentality: 5 Special Abilities: None Moves: Bite Name (1), Come (1), Stay (1), No (1), Get (Plant) (1), Get (Shell) (1), Fishing (5), Bite (2), Claw (2) The arena had a little water in it, a makeshift river it would seem, which worked really well for her right now, considering Arvest was the fisher of her Houluh. Smiling, she patted the grown up Houluh on the head and then looked around for a moment. "This is Arvest! Arvest," she announced, and then said his name. The Houluh looked at her intently and waited patiently for the next command. "Come here," she said, and he walked over to her before staying put when she said, "Now stay, Arvest." She looked at him for a moment and then he tried to sniff at her treat pouch and she shook her head, "No." He stopped and pouted for a moment before snapping to attention again. She pointed to the little river with a smile, "Get the plant buddy," He tore off toward the river and dug for a little while before trotting back with a fake plant in his mouth. Giving him a little treat, she smiled and then pointed again, "Get the shell now." Arvest went to the river again with a bark and eventually came back with a little shell, something good for the both of them to have. Jack pushed her hair back and then smiled again, "Go fishing." The Houluh wagged his tail and tore off toward the little river and came back a little bit later with a fish in his mouth. He looked so proud of himself, she knew this training had been good for him. As she looked around then, she found a log nearby and she grinned. "Bite, Arvest!" she told him, pointing at the log, and the Houluh growled and shot toward it, biting down before she then said, "Claw!" His claws dug into the log as well and then she smiled and bowed a little. They were done.

Kadin still wasn't completely sure why he'd signed up for this. It just seemed like something to do, you know? He'd put in the training and once Miles and Dodge had been approved, a contest was starting up. Might as well enter it.
He took in a deep breath while he and Miles entered the stage. For this, he'd requested a large, open field, for the most part, with some obstacles here and there to make things interesting, but not too many. He'd need a lot of space to show off most of Miles' tricks. He steeled himself, then it was time for the show.
"Miles?" The houluh looked up at his human, tongue hanging out of his mouth in a doggish grin. Kadin couldn't help but grin back. "Good boy. Now heel." They walked out together, Miles sticking close by Kadin's side and looking up at the human as if he'd hung the moon. He was a pretty good houluh.
[Miles shows Name and Heel.]

To be completely honest, it was a little bit embarrassing, but Kadin kept walking through it. They circled the arena once, Miles staying in his heel position even with a few obstacles and toys scattered in the area. Kadin even paused and did an abrupt turn, but Miles stuck by his side though it all, tail wagging madly as he enjoyed this new game.
While they were walking, Kadin suddenly said, "Stay." Miles froze where he'd been walking before, standing on all fours with his head tilted while Kadin walked away from him. Kadin had left Miles by one of the walls. Once he was in the center of the area, he stopped and turned around, regarding Miles back. Miles waited, tail slowly wagging in anticipation.
"Miles, Come!" Kadin called, grinning when the houluh bound to his side. Once Miles was close, Kadin added on "Heel" And Miles quickly changed his course, running to stand by Kadin's side, tail wagging fiercely.
[Miles shows Stay and Come (repeat: heel)]

"Good boy." Kadin murmur to his houluh, watching his tail wag faster with a chuckle. "Now, sit." Miles' rump hit the ground right where he was at, still right where he belonged by Kadin's side. "Good boy. Down!" And down he went, laying down right in the ring, tail now thumping on the ground. "Great job, Miles."
Kadin suddenly moved his feet so that one was in front, the other back. A runner's pose. Miles tensed, eyes suddenly focused, anticipating what might come next. "Ready?" Kadin teased the houluh. Miles tensed forward even more, but he didn't break his down. "Good. Miles, go go go!"
Kadin shouted, taking off at a run. Even though he'd had a head start, Miles quickly sprung out of his down and overtook him, yipping in excitement a few times as he raced ahead. Kadin laughed, chasing after Miles as the circled the arena just once. He didn't want to tire either of them out just left, although they did have a little more to show off.
[Miles shows sit, lay down, and race]

"Miles, hit the deck!" Kadin suddenly called out from behind him. Miles yipped once and skid to a halt, throwing himself onto the ground almost comically to start crawling around, moving in a circle to crawl back towards Kadin on his belly. Kadin almost started laughing right then and there, but quickly got himself under control. He jogged over to Miles and crouched next to him, as if they were working together to find something or search something out.
Kadin slowly moved forward, going slow enough so that Miles could keep by his side as they belly crawled over to one of the obstacles. Once they were beside it, Kadin told Miles, "Search!"
Miles leapt back to his feet immediately. He sniffed the air a few times before he raced off, returning only moments later with one of the scattered toys in his mouth. He squeaked it right in Kadin's face, shaking it playfully at Kadin.

Kadin did let himself roll his eyes this time. He reached out to grab the toy, shaking it playfully for Miles who deserved a bit of a reward after all that. But then Kadin stood up. "Miles, stay." And walked back to the center of the arena, stopping to scoop up a bone toy on his way. Miles watched him go, head tilted. He hadn't been told not to play with the toy, so he squeaked it a few times while he waited, eyes on Kadin.
Once Kadin was in the center, he turned and called, "Come!"
Miles bound over, squeaking his toy all the way and growling playfully. He came to a stop right in front of Kadin, falling into a natural sit, tail thumping on the ground. "Good boy, Miles. Now, Drop it."
Miles dropped the toy at Kadin's feet, tail still wagging. He loved these games, especially when he did them right.
[Miles shows Drop (repeat: stay, come)]

It started wagging even harder when Kadin held out the bone toy and told him to "Hold it."
Miles held the toy carefully this time, not bite down hard or squeaking it. He waited. "Good job, Miles." Kadin scooped up the toy he'd found originally. "Now, Drop it." Miles spat out the toy and tiled his head. Kadin handed him the original toy back and told him to "Hold it." Once again, Miles held this one delicately, being careful not to bite down too hard to squeak it. He could hold things nicely if he wanted to.
"Great job, Miles." Kadin praised, figuring they'd exhausted all of their tricks by now. He asked Miles to drop the toy again and this time he tossed it back to him, giving in to play a quick game of tug to reward them and signal that their show was over. Finally, Kadin and Miles walked out of the ring, ready to rest after a job well done.
[Miles shows hold. (repeat: drop) Finished!]

Post by Morgan on Sept 29, 2020 19:30:22 GMT -6
This was certainly not the first Salonne show Morgan had been to, and probably would not be the last. Still, they enjoyed seeing what everyone was teaching their houluh. The species was certainly the best companion animal in the Labs, or at least that was what Morgan sincerely felt. After the latest one (a gorgeous dark colored patronne with pretty red ears- what kind of marking was that?) Morgan knew that it was Todd's turn. They lead him out to the center field, and called out to the crowd- "This is Wiltholm Estate Kennel, with 'What Does the Fox Say'!" Perhaps the corniest name, but it was still fitting of the relatively foxy-colored matronne. Immediately, Morgan starts by calling Todd's name. "Todd!" He immediately turned to them, ears partially pricked (but of course a little too long and heavy to truly lift). At this, Morgan pulled a whistle from beneath their shirt (hanging on a chain around their neck) and called for him to come. Todd moves towards Morgan, and the human rapid-fires the next couple of commands- Sit, and Stay.
Todd sits down immediately, his matronne charms showing in his lithe 'foxish' face. Morgan then moves away a few feet, and Todd stays put.
[Todd knows his name, and performs come, sit, and stay.]

The next thing that Morgan has the foxish houluh to do was to search. They called for him to look for things, and immediately the houluh searched around. He sniffs the ground with an attentive pink nose, and finally picks up the nearest thing- a stick. Morgan shakes their head and calls out "No!" Immediately, the houluh drops the stick, and continues searching for something else. They go through this a few times, until finally Todd picks up a simple harness. "Good boyo!" Morgan called out, calling the Matronne back to them. He returns, and Morgan immediately puts the harness on him, showing off that he knew how to take a harness.
At this, the human moves over to a bicycle that they had made sure had been put out for them. The human sits down after leaning it up, and then calls for the houluh to ride as well.
Immediately, Todd hops up onto Morgan's lap.
[Todd shows off his ability to search, responds correctly to No, and then Tacks Up. Then, Todd performs Ride On.]

Morgan proceeds to ride the bicycle around in a circle, showing off Todd's skill at staying on their lap. He held on even through duress, such as Morgan skidding, or hopping on the bike, and even through a wheelie. After this, the human places him carefully on the ground, and then runs over to the final obstacle that they had chosen- a small tent that was very dark on the inside. Morgan stood on the other side of this tent (it had a tunnel through it so that the houluh could run through it). Morgan then called for Todd to come. Immediately the houluh came running, lithe form metaphorically flying over the grass. The foxish creature runs through the tent. As soon as he gets on the other side of it- a HUGE noise is played over the speakers (Morgan made sure to give the individuals the signal). Lots of folks in the crowd jumped, completely on edge. However, Todd was unfazed, ignoring the loud sound entirely.
"There we h-have it, the l-lovely What Does the F-Fox Say!" Morgan says, exhaustion showing through as their stutter gets a little worse. They had worked all day today, after all. Morgan makes sure that Todd is lead out of the ring carefully. He wasn't their most well trained houluh, but then again, they just entered to make sure this thing would run.
[Todd displays his Acceptance of both Enclosed Spaces and Loud Noises.] [Done!]

It would have been a lie to say Aubrey wasn't nervous. But he had felt nervous about a lot of things lately, and they had all worked out in the end... mostly. It was just a show. They wouldn't win; he knew that much already. They were just here to have a look and a try, and as long as they didn't get disqualified, that would be enough for Aubrey. "Ready to go, girl?" he said to Lyra, who gave a quiet wag of her tail. They couldn't put it off any longer anyway, since their turn had come. They walked out into the show ring together. In some ways, this wasn't all that different from when he was getting her registered. The ring was bigger though, and there was a bigger audience to match. Aubrey looked out at them, and swallowed hard. "H-Hi everyone, this is... Red Roost Ranch's Don't Look Back."

He barely got through the words. Boy, these show names were a mouthful.
Lyra accompanied his words with a bark, as if she recognized that she was being spoken of, though he had never used her show name around her. There was a smattering of laughter at that, and Aubrey smiled uncertainly at the crowd.
"Let's show them what you can do..." Aubrey took a deep breath, and tried to forget about the audience. "Lyra," he said, and her attention went to him. "Heel." He walked her around the perimeter of the ring, and she walked at a pretty good heel at his side, her posture easy and relaxed, as if they were merely going for a walk. When they reached their starting position again, Aubrey unclipped the leash from her collar and gave her a new command. "Sit. Stay." Lyra sat, and didn't move from her spot as Aubrey walked away.
(Lyra demonstrates Name, Heel, Sit, Stay on command.)

Once he had gotten a good distance from her, he said, "Come!" Lyra got up and came dashing over. "Good girl," Aubrey said. "Now lay down." Lyra went down onto her belly, watching him expectantly. Aubrey took out a treat, at which point Lyra tried to get up. "No," Aubrey said, and Lyra checked herself, laying back down.
Holding out the treat in his hand, Aubrey said, "Don't eat that." Lyra looked from the treat to him and back again, waiting for a cue from him. He let her wait several moments before he said, "Okay, at ease!"
Now that she was released, Lyra stood back up and snatched up the treat.
It didn't feel like much, to be honest, but it was the extent of what they had to show. So Aubrey repeated her name, and took a little bow - and Lyra, despite not having been trained for it, mimicked him and gave the audience a play-bow of her own before the pair of them walked out of the ring.
(Lyra demonstrates Come, No, Lay Down, Don't Eat That, and At Ease on command. Lyra also demonstrates Bow, not on command.)
