This wouldn't be the first time Nerius had brought the lotine to the breeding center, but he was a bit more concerned about it this time around than he had been before. Kasuna had been behaving out of sorts for some time now, part of it had been the recent garden move, he was sure. She'd been given time to adjust, and it had helped, but her behavior still seemed off somehow. The first thing that popped into his mind to describe it was 'sulky', but 'lethargic' and 'irritable' might have been a better description.
She sure hadn't been happy to be loaded up for the trip to the breeding center, but she hadn't really put up any sort of struggle either. She'd been easy enough to herd into a transport crate, and had just glared at him unhappily for the the entire trip. Was still glaring at him, for that matter.

He'd rather not even be bringing her to the breeding center, Nerius wouldn't have chosen to try to breed a creature who clearly wasn't doing their best like this. But much to his surprise, despite her out of sorts behavior, her flower was showing signs of being ready to produce a berry soon. It wasn't the cause of her behavior either, she'd produced berries before, and hadn't behaved anything like this.
Given her less than idea condition, he wanted to keep an eye on berry production as much as possible, and to make sure it was done as properly as possible. He wasn't sure if lotine could produce berries out on their own, but the old garden he'd purchased had several lola floating around, and very well could have been from un-monitored lola production. That was the last thing the lotine, or Nerius, needed right now, which was why despite his reservations, he'd brought Kasuna in.

The paperwork didn't take long, with only one parent there was less information to fill out than for other species, he supposed. Once that was complete, he was assigned a room, and given the go ahead to use it. Lotine seemed less popular than some of the other breedable species, and there wasn't usually much of a wait.
The room was much like the one he'd had last time, specialized for lotine, and featuring a good sized pool, surrounded by many potted plants. Once the door was shut and locked, Nerius unlatched the transport crate. Usually, Kasuna would have shot out and into the pool, but now she just stayed coiled up, and glared at him from the back of the carrier. It was strange, and he wasn't entirely sure how he was going to get the lotine out of the crate, usually the only issue was getting her inside in the first place.

Maybe he could use food? That was usually his go to technique for encouraging behavior in uncooperative critters, but she was behaving so strangely that Nerius wouldn't have been surprised if she refused food. He'd brought special fish just for the breeding, and he did hope she'd take them, and not just for a potential boost to the lola. They were packed with nutrients for berry production, and would likely be good for the lotine's overall health.
It was probably too much to hope for that the fish would fix whatever was the issue, but such a healthy snack couldn't hurt. Nerius took out one of the shimmery fish from the tub he'd brought them in. They were still alive, it wouldn't have been a place to keep them long term, but it was enough to keep the feeder fish alive and well... until it was time for them to be eaten.

And that time was now, at least for the unlucky one in Nerius' hand. "Here's a nice fiiiiiish," he wiggled the critter around where the lotine could see for a few seconds, before releasing it into the pond. Kasuna watched it at least, but didn't make any move to leave the crate. Some interest was better than none, but it wasn't getting her out of the crate.
He picked up another one, "Sure you don't want it?" This time he tossed the fish into the crate, where it landed about a foot away from the lotine's nose. She actually perked up a little at that, and slowly struck out to grab the fish. It wasn't the most vigorous grab he'd ever seen the lotine make, but at least it showed that she wasn't off her food. She ate the fish, then looked back to stare at Nerius again, though no longer so grumpily.

If anything, it was a 'do you have more?' look, something he'd seen from many, many creatures. He did have more of course, and Nerius grabbed another fish, tossing it just a little further away from the lotine than the last. Kasuna stared at it for a moment, before uncoiling enough to reach it, catching the flopping fish and eating it.
Nerius had plenty more, and continued to lure the lotine out bit by bit with fishy treats, and once she was far enough out of the crate to feel less secure, slid into the water. She didn't go far though, either due to a lack of energy, an interest in the treats, or both, and stayed in the shallows. Her head and most her 'upper' body was above the water as she watched Nerius, and the tub of fish, though it was the latter she was really more interested in.

While she was watching him for food, Nerius took the opportunity to observe her a bit more closely. That was hard to do in her usual habitat, lotine liked plenty of cover to feel comfortable, and that made it hard to get a proper look. Right now though, she was up close, and not hiding, and the fish helped to keep her attention.
At first glance, she seemed physically fine. Her skin looked healthy, and she didn't appear either gaunt or bloated, and her tendrils were smooth, clean, and untangled. There weren't any obvious physical injuries, no external wounds, or things bent in ways they shouldn't have been. Her eyes looked a bit dull, but other than that the only thing that looked different was her flower. But it was starting to bloom, and produce a berry, so it was supposed to look different than it usually did- wait, what was that?

One of the petals was off color, the rest were all creamy white, but one was dull orange. It was easy to miss, especially with her muted brown markings, if didn't exactly stand out. But that was not the color her petals were supposed to be, nor were they supposed to be that shape, jagged rather than smooth.
Nerius used another fish as a bribe to keep the lotine still as he moved just a little closer. She was tolerating his presence remarkably well, and for that he was grateful, there was no way he'd have been able to see what was going in with the flower if she'd been diving into the water at the slightest movement from him. Still, he tried to move and slowly and calmly as he could, to avoid startling the lotine as he inspected her flower. He wasn't quite sure what would cause just a single petal to discolor like that.

Unless, it wasn't a petal at all! It had legs, and a head; some kind of parasite? He had a sneaking suspicion he knew where it was from too. When moving the lotine from his old garden, he'd ended up shoving the transport crate into the water to capture the lotine. When he'd dredged it back up with the lotine, it had also been filled with water weeds, and while he'd been cleaning those out, he'd found an old jar.
The lid had been missing, and the label all worn away, but it had looked awfully similar to the jars lomites were kept in. Ugh, that's what he got for keeping his plants in such a trashy garden for so long, he supposed. He could only hope it wouldn't do any long term damage, though she was willing to eat at least, and Nerius give her another fish to keep the lotine interested.

Parasites were a fact of life with gardens, but as far as he could tell, lolatics were rather rare, and there wasn't a whole lot of information about them out there. He didn't know what the treatment for them was, if there even was a treatment, or how easily they spread. He knew they were specific to lotine, and maybe lola, but it wasn't going to infect him, or even another plant creature like a pachee. They weren't lethal, as far as he knew, but he wasn't sure what kind of ill effects they could have on a lotine.
They didn't seem harmful to the breeding process, at the very least, it didn't seem to be stopping berry production. Nerius was able to watch the progress of the flower as he gave Kasuna fish, the flower was continuing to bloom, and very soon, would have a berry ready. Assuming it didn't explode into a bunch of lolatics or something.

Well, I've never seen a Lola like that before.
