There wasn't anything that Renathan liked more than long walks in the fall. He hated the cold months- by that he meant the winter. He'd never seen snow before he came to Pethia, and all those months crossing the desert on the red-wall side had made him glad just to see water. However, the enjoyment of the winter months fell off really fast. He thought about the incoming winter and what it meant to him, while not quite missing the summer days, either. The city was already painted in autumn shades, like a bonfire drawn across leaves. Morti was absolutely adorable, pouncing on those leaves and kind of making him look silly, but he was sure that he was probably the only person that would think such a drake was cute. At least out of the ones that he knew. They would be home soon enough. He'd have to dig around to look for a suitable costume.

Renathan didn't really want to have to worry about a costume, but that was the entire conceit, right? He knew that he'd have to put one together, though. He was sure no one would ask him anything or even pay him any mind if he didn't put on one- his normal every day clothes tended to be quite exotic to the people of the Labs City... Really most of the people in Pethia. Still, he hummed beneath his breath and tried to focus on the city around him. The trees weren't the only gorgeous things that he could see. Beyond that, were people's houses in the residential areas. In fact, they were done up in all kinds of decorations. He watched with some embarrassment as Morti pounced on a fake giant blowup Death Weaver. Good thing he was Ethereal, but still, he was so poorly trained, and that was all his fault!

Renathan had to finally usher Morti along a little faster on their walk. As much as he personally loved to walk- the poor fella was scaring the heck out of people that were watching them (some even angrily) out of the windows of their homes. "C'mon Morti, you're freaking people out." He says, finally getting him to stop 'jumping on' (really through) people's blow up decorations and batting at the ghosts and zombie izers and stuff hanging off of their trees. Goodness, he was a mess! After what felt like forever, they got home. That was probably one of the longest hours of Renathan's life, he thought. He lets out a sigh of relief, and then groans. He still had to dig around in his house and find a costume! What a mess. At least it would probably be worth it... Maybe? He walks up the stairs and then up another flight of pull-down stairs to get to the attic.

Renathan had not been in his attic for a long time. A real bother, really. Morti follows him up the stairs (normally it would be too small for a creature of his size, but of course ethereal creatures are unhindered by such things). The russet mammalian sneezes at all of the dust in the dark room, and he searches for the hanging-thread light that he would need to pull on to get it to turn on. After some fruitless bumbling about and walking into things, he finally clicks the light on. It is a bare bulb light... He should probably get this area completely redone. He just never anticipated the need to actually find some of the stuff he'd put up here again. Morti files in, half-sticking through boxes, and finds himself a spot to lay down and keep an eye on Renathan. The mammalian was so used to it that he paid it no mind.

Renathan had banged his knees up a bit on some of the boxes when he was moving around in the dark. He frowns and makes sure that he didn't cut himself on any of the sharper things in the boxes. Luckily, he was fine. He digs around in some of the boxes, trying to remember where he put anything that could be used to create a costume. He finally drags up a few different sashes that looked like autumn themes (he used one last year in the Vai Min Mur contest, if he remembers right?) and then also finds a few leafy drapeings for his antlers. He decides to call it quits at that. He was pretty tired by now, but at least he was already at home. He takes the things down to get them washed in the washing machine, save for the antler drapeings of course, which were hand washed. Morti follows Renathan around the house as normal.

After Renathan was done with all the preparing, he made sure to put the items he planned on wearing to the event were put in a plastic tub in the kitchen, so that he could get to them and remember them when the time came. He walks over to his calendar on the wall, and then takes a pen out and makes sure to mark down that on that date he needed to get there at the time indicated on the paper. Then, he realizes that perhaps, he could cater for the thing. It was a week after he was going to get some new Apprentices, so it would be a good thing to get them used to doing catering. It wouldn't be too rough. Of course, he'd have to contact the mage tower to see if they'd allow for a small booth to be added for the party. Renathan smiles, and then walks through Morti to go grab some paper to send a letter.

The letter was drafted and put in the mailbox. Renathan was pretty tired, and decided to hit the hay. He fed the creatures a little early (including Auburn, who he spent most of the evening with) and then passed out in his bed, with Auburn across the room and Morti asleep 'in the floor'.
Time goes by quickly after that. The rest of the week is mostly uneventful. Renathan selects two new individuals out of the applicants to be his apprentices, and he begins showing them the ropes. Another letter is returned from the Mage Tower, accepting his request to be given a booth area so that he could cater a bit. Morti follows him around more often in the fall for whatever reason, and it shows that entire week. Renathan begins planning what sorts of coffee and confections they would bring. Apparently, cupcakes are in order, and perhaps some alcoholic beverages.

The mammalian spends a lot of the second week experimenting with different flavors and such. His apprentices do a lot of the work as well, both of them excited to be doing something that was so 'high brow' as far as they were concerned. Renathan knew that it was not common that people that didn't or couldn't use magic could actually go to the mage tower and enter, but it hadn't occurred to him how exciting it would be for people to figure stuff out about something that was usually closed off to them. He felt a little old, watching it, anyway. Morti has taken to sitting behind him in the counter, even on days where he has Auburn with him. He doesn't mind it, though plenty of his patrons seemed surprised at Morti at first. Ghostly drakes were not at all common in any way.
Time was running short when Renathan finally makes a breakthrough.

Renathan is able to decide on some specific things to bring to the party, and he couldn't have scraped it any closer to time, as far as he was concerned. Of course he was planning on bringing the ever popular pumpkin spice drinks, but he also planned on some apple cider, some cinnamon and dark chocolate, and a few different kinds of cupcakes. Beyond anything else, he had decided on bringing gourmet s'more creation stations, about three burners and large graham crackers, differently flavored marshmallows, and plenty of kinds of chocolate. They were about four bites big, and he knew that they would be a big hit with their slightly smokey flavor. Excitedly, he and the apprentices worked together to get the things ready for the party. Renathan chuckles when he finds out what the apprentices were planning on going as. When it comes time to shut down the Catseye for the day, everyone goes home (and Morti is hot on Renathan's heels).

Renathan takes a shower first off. He'd had a long day at work and was quite nasty feeling. He had also spent some of the day at the forge, and it always felt like soot tended to cling to him afterwards. Whenever he finally got all of the soot off of him, the russet mammalian dressed up for the occasion. Last year, at the Vai Min Mur contest, he had worn this long drape over him that looks like autumn leaves on the wind on nearly sheer fabric. He ties a more opaque fabric around his waist in more modest colors, and then wraps another of the sheer fabrics around it and winds it over his shoulders. Finally, he takes the time to carefully weave some of the leaves into his antlers. There! He knew that he looked pretty silly, but there would be people looking even more silly at the party.
"If only we could get a costume for you, Morti!" He says.

Morti knows that Renathan is speaking to him, but he hadn't been paying a lot of attention. He yawns from his sleepy corner spot, but whenever Renathan grabbed the boxes and headed for the door, he tilts his head and follows him through the closed door. Renathan had done some kind of ritual before he left. He always seemed to do that when he wasn't going to be around the small fluffy creature. Morti follows him down the street off of the estate. He'd been really busy lately, almost too busy to do much else. Morti knew that he was planning on going somewhere important, and that he wanted him to go, but that was about it.
Renathan's walk was a little quicker this time. The sun was going down, and soon it would be time to be there. How embarrassing would it be if he was late? This had been his idea.

Luckily for him, he gets there on time, with one ethereal drake in tow. He and his two apprentices get everything together, and bring them into the mage tower a little earlier than the party was starting, to make sure that it was set up in time. They'd worked very hard on the table itself. Renathan had even painted a spooky glowy nighttime theme on the outside of the tablecloth they would use, and made sure that it was set before they came. He sets up all of the burners and heaters, to make sure that the drinks stayed at the correct temperatures, and then below the table the trio made sure to put all of the items they would need to make sure that things were stocked and work properly.
Renathan took some extra time to set up two extra tables, for the creation of s'mores on one, and for people to sit at the other. Some of the mages watched Morti with interest.

Morti was mostly bored with his surroundings. There were people, and there were creatures around, but as an ethereal creature, he often felt a bit distanced from other beings. Now was no exception. He curls up around the display, unhurt by all of the physical implements. Renathan couldn't help but think that he looked SO COOL draped around his display, as if it was purposeful. Of course, Morti tended to do what he wanted to do. Eventually, the russet mammalian was going to have to train him to do more of the things that he wanted him to do on command. He wasn't dangerous, as he was, save for that fire breath that he seemed to forget he could use whenever Renathan wasn't actively asking him to use it. Really, he had been lucky up to this point,
Whenever they got set up, they waited for their first few customers. Whenever the party started up, their little setup got VERY popular.

People came by, and had a drink. They came by, and tried a cupcake. Renathan was SO PROUD of those cupcakes, speaking of that! Some of them were made to look like weavers- all black and with legs... And brightly colored markings and so many eyes- of course they were so tiny that people thought that they were cute. Exactly one person ran screaming when he saw the weaver cupcakes, and Renathan sort of hissed by drawing air through his teeth... Yeah, he hadn't expected that to happen. However, some of them looked like pumpkins, some like little ghosts, and he had several donuts made as well that were made to look like salaves biting their own tails(once again, there were a few people that seemed quite scared of those- woops!). However, the coffee was very popular, and Renathan was pleased with how the night was going. All of the flavors seemed equally liked overall, and Morti was minding himself.

Renathan was not planning on spending all night there, though. He knew that the party was planned to go into the late hours of the morning, but both he and his apprentices had work early in the morning. They had all decided that they would only stay until midnight, and then call it quits. They'd all only get five ours of sleep, but this was a great boost in money and publicity for the Catseye, so all of them were pleased enough with the extra work.
The S'mores wound up being a HUGE hit, and Morti was well liked by everyone. Time stretched on into the evening, and Renathan didn't feel so weird about his own costume when he saw everyone else's silly costumes. When did he become so self conscious? Whenever midnight got there, All of them got together again and packed everything up. Morti went back home with Renathan. Renathan considered the entire endeavor a success!
