Quinn may as well have dragged Sevyrn out if the house in her enthusiasm - it seemed that the other woman was thrilled to finally be on their away. Sev had to appreciate her efforts, at least a little bit - Quinn really did have her best interests at heart even if she didn't know how to truly help. How was she supposed to when Sev herself didn't know what she needed right now, anyways?
It was as they made their way towards the edge of town that Sevyrn realized exactly where they were heading... the archmage's tower. The young woman found herself unnerved by this - hadn't there been a disaster there last year? Hopefully this one would be different...
It seemed that Sevyrn would want to be leaving pretty quickly anyways, so hopefully if anything did go wrong then she at least wouldn't be there. Was it too late to just turn around?

The closer that they got, the more that Sevyrn wanted to turn around... Not wanting to do this had been her attitude since the very beginning, though after seeing how earnestly Quinn just wanted to see her be happy again. They could show up, have a few drinks, make a decent night of it - and then it would be over, and they could go back to their own lives like nothing had even happened.
As they neared the tower, they started to see a slow trickle of people making their way in to the building. It seemed like they had shown up right on time, just after the sun had given way to the night. She had to admit, it was at least a really nice night to be out and about.
And then Quinn grabbed her hand and yanked her towards the building. Off they went, it seemed to be.

Sevyrn was whisked through the front doors and in to the tower by an eager Quinn, and the shock of being around so many people for the first time in so long hit her. Sevyrn had to stop and remind herself that not a single one of these people gave a solitary shit about her- and that was relieving. People were gathered amongst their own groups or at a small bar, going about their lives like it was any other day.
Quinn, knowing her so well, had dashed off and returned with a daiquiri in hand quicker than Sev could even tealize that she had ran away for a minute. Oh well - there was now a drink in her hand.
"Why thank you darling," Sevyrn said to Quinn, smiling as she brought the glass to her lips. Maybe a drink or two would help her chill the fuck out and enjoy the excursion.

Sevyrn knew that even with a drink or two in her system she still wouldn't be much for parties, but it wasn't like she needed to go mingle - she could sneak off and hide in a quiet room or even leave if she so felt like it. Quinn just seemed... so damn happy. That girl always had a way to brighten up a room with her light and Sev adored it - and also understood that Quinn was simply trying to help her out in whatever way possible. Her methods just... weren't exactly Sevyrn's cup of tea. It was an honest and genuine effort, though.
So the young woman did what she needed to - downed the drink in her hand only for it to immediately replaced, and chatted about with Quinn as she sipped slower at the second. She might be drinking a lot these days, but that didn't mean she was about to get sloppy out in public.

Sevyrn loved Quinn - it wasn't a romantic feeling (or at least she didn't think so, she struggled to really tell the difference between platonic and romantic feelings sometimes, but she was pretty DAMN SURE), but without a doubt Sevyrn absolutely adored her best friend to the nth degree. As Sevyrn was half way through the drink in her hand Quinn had got distracted by a pretty face in the crowd - Sevyrn could see the heart eyes forming a halo of adoration over the redhead's skull before she had even started to move.
"Qui-" Nope. Quinn was too far off to even notice Sevyrn's attempt to keep her around, and all Sev could do was shake her head. Quinn could talk like no other sometimes, seamlessly and flawlessy in a way that Sev's anxious brain could not even comprehend. Did she not worry at all about making a bad impression? Not overthink every word that came out of her mouth? Such a concept was strange.

Perhaps that was why Sevyrn had been dragged down here, though - to be a babysitter. She wholeheartedly believed that Quinn had good intentions and genuinely just wanted to see her getting out and about, but really? The girls both had to have known exactly how this party would go... Sev would keep to herself, trying to avoid talking to anyone new, and Quinn would be her happy go lucky extroverted self, becoming the light of the room and drawing attention to herself. Maybe Sevyrn simply felt like she was Quinn's keeper because it gave her a reason to be here, but she definitely was going to have to keep an eye on the friendly woman throughout the night until it was a perfectly acceptable time to head home.
"You look out of place." The words startled Sevyrn - she'd been too lost, zoned out watching Quinn with her lips to her drink, to notice the girl who had come up to her side.

Long pale blonde hair so light it almost seemed silver, blue eyes peering from behind a masquerade mask - that was all Sevyrn could make out of the stranger who spoke to her. A young malii clung to her shoulder, appearing to be as fond of kittens as Sevyrn herself was. The way she stammered to get the words out reminded Sevyrn of the way she spoke, too - anxious, like she didn't feel like she belonged here either. The young woman got a chuckle out of that.
"Yeah, I..." Sevyrn pointed towards Quinn. "I got dragged out here by my friend, it wasn't my idea at all."
"Me too!" The blonde mused, and then pointed to the very man that Quinn had run off to talk to.
"... Is she chatting up your boyfriend? Because if so, I swear she has no idea. Quinn is not that kind of person, I swear."

The young woman burst in to a laugh, and shook her head.
"No, he's actually my brother. She can talk to him all she wants," the woman corrected and Sevyrn audibly exhaled her sigh of relief. As much as she considered herself Quinn's keeper, she didn't want to have to do any actual keeping. Luckily they had dodged a bullet there.
"Oh thank fuck." The blonde laughed again thanks to that.
"No, my brother just likes to drag me along to these things. Says that I 'need to get out of the house'. I figured it is Vai Min Mur, may as well you know?" Sevyrn nodded, unsure how to handle the stranger who had approached her. She knew this may have been a normal thing for Quinn to go through, but it was not for her. "I'm Mako, by the way. Sorry if I bothered you, it just seemed like you wouldn't drag me off to dance or anything like that."

"Uh, yeah. Nice to meet you." Was it? Sevyrn hadn't talked to a new person in... well, she went to the breeding center with Jack a lot, but outside of those ventures she hadn't talked to anyone other than Quinn in months now let alone met any strangers at parties. Maybe it was a good thing that Mako had come up and started talking to her? Quinn would say so, at least - in fact the other woman had already noticed the blonde chatting with Sevyrn and when the two best friends made eye contact, Quinn offered Sevyrn a thrilled congratulatory thumbs up. "I'm... you can call me Sev."
"Nice to meetcha, Sev. The little kitty here-" Mako pointed to the juvenile malii on her shoulder "-is Ami. I can't lie, the malii costume is kind of why I came over. Do you have any of your own? I just got this little lady from the APAA."

"I do, actually," Sevyrn affirmed, finally sparing a hint of a smile towards the newcomer. At least they had something that they could talk about. "Ramses, a little fire-akui baby. He's a hellion, but I love him. I have a young mosca, too." Sevyrn loved all things cat... and dog... and, well, almost every animal that she could get her hands on as long as they weren't about the insect life. Weavers and Formica? They wouldn't be touched with a ten foot pole, but anything else Sev would at least consider raising, if it wasn't already part of her repertoire.
"What's this little guy? A zeni?"
"Yeah! I guess someone had left her behind outside of the shelter, and I was lucky enough to bring her home. I don't know how someone could leave behind a kitty so sweet, Ami is an utter angel." Mako seemed to really like talking about her malii - this made the interaction relatively easy, luckily.

The two talked for a little while, Mako owning the conversation while Sevyrn struggled to keep her part. She sipped at that second drink then a third then a forth, and slowly piece by piece she started to come that tiniest bit undone and feel comfortable in her new - and still kind of unwelcome - surroundings. She even ended up with the young malii in her arms, purring as she scratched behind the kitten's ears. Maybe, just maybe, Sevyrn would be able to say that she actually made a friend here. What a shocker - Sev could honestly say that she hadn't expected that to happen.
Sparing a look to make sure Quinn was still alright (she was), the two tipsy girls made their way through a closed door as they dared to get adventurous. Mako took the lead, dragging Sevyrn around with quips about how "there had to be something spooky here again this year."

Sevyrn really, empathically, did not want to find 'something spooky' here - the light buzz and the company was fun but what in the world were they supposed to do if they actually did come across something on their little adventure? Fight if off? Sevyrn had absolutely zero combat ability and the only animal she looked after who did was Bez and he... well, he had only ever been in one fight and had lost it. Mako only had a malii on her, Sev's magical abilities were... well, she had a node but her ability to use it was still quite nonexistent.
"This is a bad idea!" Sevyrn tried to plea as Mako pulled her through a door, whisking her away deeper in to the tower. The door closed behind them with a thud, and then Sevyrn found herself pinned to the wall with one of Mako's arms on each side of her shoulders.

The young woman was startled, to say the least - she gasped as her back hit the cold stones that made up the hard wall, and her muted green eyes went wide.
"Then we don't have to!" Mako still seemed cheerful, unphased. "I just thought it might be fun - y'know, find the creature that's rumored to be hidden deep in here... You're right, though. It's a little bit crazy. There are much less reckless things that we could do that wouldn't come with so much trouble."
Sevyrn had no idea what the blonde meant by that until they were watching each other with a leavy-lidded, alcohol fueled gaze, and suddenly Mako was kissing her.
She enjoyed it, just for a minute - it had been months since the last time she was held close let alone touched. That light, airy feeling of bliss came crashing down as the guilt struck, though.
"I have a dead fiance." Sevyrn said, point blank, as she used both of her hands to push the blonde off of her.

Mako didn't even have time to formulate a response to the sudden drop of heavy news before Sevyrn had ducked beneath the woman's arm and pulled that heavy door back open, only to disappear in to the hallway faster than the blink of an eye. She speed walked back towards the main room, a thousand thoughts running through her brain, as she burst back in to the room and immediately scanned the room for Quinn - it was time to go, she wasn't having any fun any more. Ryden may have been dead but Sev still felt like she'd somehow just cheated on him even though she hadn't done anything of her own accord, and if that on its own did not say that she shouldn't be getting involved in anything, she didn't know what would.
Quinn was having a blast, still talking to the boy from earlier, and Sevyrn almost felt bad as she dipped between people to reach her best friend and grab her attention with a hand to her shoulder.

"Can we go now, Quinn?" Her voice was rushed, panicked - and her best friend didn't know what to make of it. Quinn had, after all, noticed that Sevyrn had seemed to be making a friend before she disappeared. She opened her mouth as if to argue, to tell Sev to relax and have fun and the night was still young, but there was no mistaking the look in the brunette's eyes that said they really did need to go.
"I... yeah." Quinn apologized to her companion, offered him a sweet wave as she turned to walk out of the tower at Sevyrn's side. It wasn't how she had hoped to spend the rest of her night, but she'd also known to expect Sev would want to cut the night short when she'd made the call to ask her friend to join.
"So... what happened? You seemed to be having fun?" Quinn asked after they'd walked out of the building, concern lacing her voice. Sevyrn simply shook her head in response, not sure how to word what she wanted to say. They'd have the rest of the night to work through that nonsense.
