Sevyrn hadn't been aware of just how small the baby harachiu were until she had walked out the doors of the Hunter's Lodge with a strange little sleeping being barely the size of her pinkie fingerkept safe in a glorified bird cage barely bigger in height than the length of her hand. What a strange and fascinating little being this one - and one she considered a grand honor to be caring for. Where had she come from? Had she been taken from a family, or found on her own? Sevyrn had no idea how she had come to care for this little thing and she had barely stepped foot out of the store when she was hit with remorse for potentially taking this little being from an unaware family - a mother who had cared deeply for her, potentially even siblings.
"I'm sorry that I had you taken from your home little one," Sevyrn said as she leaned against a fence post; the little hara within the cage was starting to rouse.
The little thing yawned as it's eyes poked upon, looking towards Sevyrn with a look of confusion. She swore she could hear a little scared whimper coming from the sweet baby, so Sevyrn shed it from the confines of its cages - it was cruel to keep something so aware confined like that.
"It's okay, sweet thing," Sevyrn said softly, pulling the door of the little cage open. She must have been so big to this little thing... Fuck. Sevyrn hadn't wanted to scare her like this, she had been hoping to get back home and lock Ramses in the bedroom during her harachiu's first waking moments with her... that wasn't how things were going to go now.
The little thing was swaddled within some kind of cloth, so Sev very carefully reached in with ta few fingers to lift the young one out. She cradled the harachiu in her palm, with a soft smile on her face.
They could learn to speak, right? Maybe not as a little baby like this, but once they grew a bit bigger and stronger? Sevyrn would have to make sure to spend time just talking with this sweet little thing as they had a chance to grow closer, give her the chance to pick up the common tongue. Sevyrn imagined it was like teaching a child to talk, it came with exposure to language. Did that mean that she would have to keep an eye on her tongue, lest she accidentally teach the harachiu to say 'fuck'? Probably... welp, the harachiu was probably one day going to learn how to swear, it was just bound to happen.
Sevyrn held the thing gently in her hand, vanishing the cage she had been trapped in inside of her backpack. "Life will be good, sweet thing. I'm sorry that it's a little scary right now, but we will be home soon."
The baby's whimper in her hand pulled at Sevyrn's heart strings - this little girl was the smallest baby that Sevyrn had held yet, the sweetest of the little angels that she had been blessed with the opportunity to care for.
She was so, so cautious on her way home - Sevyrn hadn't been the type to trip on her own feet yet with such precious cargo she wasn't about to take any risks. The hard part was going to be once they got home... Ramses was free roaming, and he'd taken down caterpillars bigger than the little harachiu in Sevyrn's hand.
She must be so scared right now... Sevyrn wished that they could just skip that stage, that the little thing would be able to understand her from day one - she was going to need time to learn the common tongue before she would be able to understand the message behind Sevyrn's words, though. The best soothing that Sev could offer was a soft tone, in hopes that she might feel safe.
"Life's going to be a bit more scary for another moment, but I'm going to get the big kitten put away and then you'll be able the check out your new home - I've even got a place already set up for you. Once you're a bit bigger you'll be able to fly around all you like, I promise." Sevyrn stroked the little one's thick head of blue hair with the tip of her thumb and held her hand to her chest, cupped wide enough to not cramp the alert young one in her hand.
Then she pushed the door open - and was immediately met with a series of meows from a malii who was very happy to see his mama again.
"Yes Ramses, hello to you too," Sevyrn said, hoping that she wouldn't have to pick the malii kit up to get him in to her bedroom. The hara needed a safe opportunity to see her new home.
The malii kitten continued to mew at her feet, weaving his way between her legs as she tried to guide him towards the bedroom - the poor little thing had been left alone for a while hour! He needed to be loved on, and Sevyrn always loved on him as soon as she got home - what was going on!?
"Come on kitten," Sevyrn said to the malii, whose meows had caught the attention of the baby being kept safe against Sevyrn's chest. She whimpered, so soft yet enough to catch Ramses' attention. He stopped in his tracks and cocked his head to the side, focusing on Sev's cupped hand.
Oh dear… he better not try to go after the harachiu already. Sevyrn tried to shoo the little thing off but when they reached the bedroom he showed no interest in wandering in.
"Go on, Ramses," Sevyrn said to him, though he had no interest in listening.
Fuck. Sevyrn wasn't about to kick the cat to get him in to the bedroom, so she was going to have to scoop the kitten up.
"Behave," Sevyrn warned as she crouched down, and she held Ramses close to her as she walked in to the bedroom. The kitten mewed and reached out towards her cupped hand, obviously aware that she was holding on to something. Sevyrn sighed and very cautiously uncurled her hand to show him their new little friend.
Ramses didn't know what to think about the little thing, especially when she looked straight toward him and had the same look of curiosity as he did. The harachiu blinked before yawning, her tiny mouth stretching wide.
Ramses didn't try to go after her upon seeing her... that was good. He would still be spending some time locked in the bedroom so that the new resident would be able yo safely check out her new home, though.
As soon as the door closed behind him Ramses was meowing and clawing at the door to get out - he wasn't used to being cast away in his own home, that was for sure. What was the reason behind this insanity!?
Sevyrn was able to offer the harachiu a few moments of safety now, though. She moved her hand away from her chest to allow the little thing to see everything that was going on, but the hara seemed to be rather sleepy despite just waking up from a nap recently. She stretched within her swaddle and struggled to keep her eyes open.
"Are you tired, sweet thing?" Sevyrn asked her, and the harachiu's lips pursed together like a human baby who didn't know what was going on. She had no idea what was being said to her, did she? That was okay, they would have plenty of time to learn to understand each other.
The young one cooed in the palm of her hand as Sevyrn wandered in to the living room, scanning the room with wide eyes. The place was so big and there was so much going on... what was this place, anyways? She didn't understand where she was or why she was here... this girl seemed to be nice, though. Her voice was soft, calming... and that strange kitten could be a friend? She would like that. She liked friends.
The living room faded in to the kitchen - another new space with new things. The harachiu could smell the food in there, and nothing was even cooked yet... yummy. Her tummy rumbled and she looked up towards Sevyrn, smacking her lips as she did so.
Sevyrn didn't quite know what to make of it... Yeah, she was going to have to learn how to understand the hara as much as the hara was going to need to learn to understand her.
The infant in her hand kept mouthing around, looking to Sevyrn expectantly - she wanted something to eat, and with time that strange behavior turned in to a sad little face. Was the baby about to cry?
In that moment Sevyrn realized that she was incredibly unprepared for the commitment that she took on. The young one's lips wobbled as she watched the woman, who was now in a race to figure out what her new child - which the harachiu may as well have been, given their sentience and intelligence level - wanted from her.
"Are you hungry, Ellie?" Sevyrn asked the spriteling, using the name that she had given her for the first time ever. The harachiu continued to whimper, and Sevyrn went flitting around her kitchen to find something to feed the little thing. Hopefully that would make the young one feel a little better?
The house had gotten busier, to say the least - Elisa had gotten bigger in time, Sevyrn had come to find the magical bloom of another young harachiu in her yard which meant that there was now a second little body trying to flutter about the home. She’d even crafted the little beings their own home within hers, essentially an oversized dollhouse that they got to call her own. The harachiu did not live a bad life, to say the least. Sevyrn struggled to walk the line between spoiling them and simply treating them right - caring for a sentient being like this seemed like so much more of a responsibility to her than, say, one of her mosca - but she was doing her damnedest and the young ones didn’t seem to have a problem with any of it. Elisa was developing an attitude but she was at that age where one started to develop a sense of boundaries and as such she was in that phase of trying to push other peoples’ limits to find out where the line was.
That especially made Sevyrn glad that she wasn’t an actual mom, with a human toddler and small child playing games with her.
