Of all the things he had expected on the quest board this month, this hadn't even crossed his mind. A costume party. An entire quest on the board just to go to a costume party. Kadin thought about skipping it. Then he looked at the potential reward. Then he thought about skipping it again, on principal, since it seemed like some rich asshole had just put this quest up here in order to get people to go to their party. What, did they want to get a minimum number of guests or some shit? He didn't like it. Then he looked at the reward again. He sighed. "Damn it. I guess we're going to a costume party, Cadmium." He commended down to the small hatchling in his arms. The sarane yawned widely. "Yeah. My thoughts exactly." He had no idea what you were even supposed to wear to a costume party, much less what to DO at one.

Figuring that in order to go to a costume party he should probably get a costume first, Kadin went home to, uh. Get that all together. The problem was, he didn't really have much in the way of costumes. What he did have in abundance were masks, for some reason. So he ended up grabbing a mask and wearing his nicest clothes, figuring that at least he could look as if he were dressed up enough to be as a masquerade it should be fine. The real struggle came in deciding what to do with Cadmium. After all, shouldn't the hatchling dress up, too, if he was going to go to the party? Kadin DID end up finding some really cute paw, wing, and tail get ups. He was even able to wrestle the sarane into one. He had no doubt that it'd end up scattered throughout the room by the end of the night, but it was that thought that counted, right?

Costume acquired for both him and the sarane, Kadin made his way towards the place where this whole thing was supposed to be happening. He'd never been here before, apparently unlike the entire rest of the labs, but the rumors he kept hearing floating around sure weren't promising anything good about where they'd be going. From what he gathered, it was apparently an Archmage's Tower where some... things. Events. Had unfolded the last time there was a party here. Well, whatever. Kadin didn't give a crap. He'd show up, he'd get his prize or whatever for showing up, and then he'd leave. Nothing bad was going to happen (famous last words, right?) He would make sure of it. He certainly wouldn't be bringing an offspring sarane if he thought there was going to be any danger. No, if there was going to be something dangerous, he would have brought and adult!

Right. Anyway. Kadin made his way to the tower, carefully navigating his way through the so far sparse crowds of people until he made his way to the front doors. He vaguely wondered how many of these people were also basically being paid to be here. He wondered whether or not he actually cared. Shrugged, Kadin eventually decided that, no, he did not care, and made his way inside, sarane still in his arms. Somewhere along the way, Cadmium had lost the tail that was supposed to be part of his costume. They hadn't even officially entered the party yet. Kadin wasn't too worried about it, actually surprised he'd kept the gloves and "wings" for this long. He vaguely wondered how long they would last, too, before deciding that he didn't actually care to know. Instead, he focused on lurking at the edges of the crowds, trying to stay mostly out of sight.

You couldn't quite say that he was trying to avoid everyone here at this thing, but he was also totally trying to avoid everyone at this thing. If he could just find a good patch of wall to stand against for a while, he could still say that he'd been here, but without actually having to interact with everyone here. He HATED parties like this. He especially hated this because he literally didn't know anyone. Not here, not anywhere. What was the POINT of being at a partly like this if he couldn't talk to anyone? If he didn't even want to talk to anyone? If even the thought of talking to anyone was making him uncomfortable? What if someone recognized him? What if someone knew him from before and were pissed off that he didn't know who they were? He didn't want to deal with all of these questions that he wasn't ready to have answered yet!

Kadin needed to calm the fuck down, is what he needed to do. He took in a deep breath and released it out again. No one was going to recognize him here. He was in a fucking mask. Cadmium was new so no one was going to recognize him through his pets, either. He'd planned for that. Well, not really, but it still counted since it ended up working out for him that way. He just needed to get through one night and he'd be able to collect his reward and pretend that this had never happened. He held his sarane tighter for a moment before relaxing and slowly lowering him to the ground. Might as well entertain them both for a while while they were stuck here anyway. He didn't want to deal with having a bored sarane in his arms on top of everything else if he was going to get through this night.

Luckily, Kadin had planned for just that. He'd brought a toy, one of those bat on a string kind of toys, to help keep Cadmium entertained and doing something. That way Kadin could focus on his drake instead of how much he didn't want to be there and Cadmium wouldn't gnaw his arm off. Kadin held up the bat toy, floating it over the drake hatchling's head, smiling a bit once he finally noticed it after Kadin had to hit him on the head with it. The sarane growled, glaring at the bat as if it had personally offended him. He snapped at it, tiny sharp teeth clicking together in the air, trying to bite down on the toy when Kadin let it close enough to him. Of course, he didn't let him get the toy. He'd fucking break it. Kadin had it dancing out of his way, snickering a bit while the drake looked visibly frustrated.

Eventually, Cadmium started swiping at the toy. He wasn't able to get at it by just snapping at it with his teeth. He started stumbling around on his little, unsteady, baby sarane legs, growing and making a big show of how tough and scary he was as if he'd be able to intimidate the toy into his mouth. He tried little hops to get closer to it and reaching out with his tiny clawed arms, trying to grab it out of the air. But he was too small and too uncoordinated to hope to reach it even vaguely, never mind actually catching it. Kadin was easily able to keep it out of his reach without much effort at all. He even went so far as to let the toy drag on the ground, watching and snickering to himself while Cadmium stumbled after it, hissing in frustration at not being able to catch it!

That damn toy! The sarane was getting more and more visibly frustrated, whether at the toy or himself, it was hard to say. But regardless, he kept chasing after it, so it must have been at least somewhat entertaining to him. Kadin eventually started to get bored of teasing him. So while he continued to tease him mindlessly, he started scanning the room to see what everyone else was getting up to. This was a party, after all, and he'd only staked out one small corner of it that was out of the way. He wondered idly if he should make his way over to one of the meal tables to snag something to eat. He'd had lunch, but it was getting past dinner time by now, so maybe it wouldn't hurt things to get himself and Cadmium something to eat while they were here. That was supposed to be one of the perks of coming here, right?

The free food? Humming to himself, contemplating his opens, Kadin suddenly felt a tug on the toy he'd been teasing the sarane with. "Shit." Cadmium had somehow managed to snag a claw against the bat, growling as fiercely as his tiny body could bear as he tried to pull the toy closer to himself. Kadin thought about actually giving it to him, but he was still pretty sure that the drake would utterly destroy the toy if he did. It might be small, but it had some pretty damn sharp teeth, even if they weren't long enough to pierce, say, thundergug flesh. He tugged at the other end of the toy, trying to get it away from the hatchling, but with another fierce growl, he brought up his other little skinny chicken arm to grasp around the toy, trying to pull it towards himself. "Hey." Kadin said, amused. "Stop that, you'll break it."

Cadmium did not stop it and did not seem at all worried that he'd break it. Instead, he seemed to buckle down even MORE, determined to get the hell toy away from Kadin and the chew it up in peace. Kadin rolled his eyes and tried to tug it away from him a few times before just giving up and letting him have it. It was fine. He didn't actually care that much. Cadmium could destroy it for all he cared, he had plenty more back at home for future sarane to chew up at a costume party. Kadin looked away for a bit, back to the free food, and hummed to himself. He should be heading over there sooner rather than later, before it all got eaten. I mean, the party had only just started and there was tons of the stuff out, but some of these people looked pretty hungry.

Like himself. So Kadin crouched down to look his sarane in the eyes. "Hey. We're going to go get some free food. You game?" The sarane, of course, did not answer him in words. But he DID have a mouth full of bat toy. "Great." Kadin said, pleased, as if the sarane had actually replied to him in real words. He scooped up the hatchling and carried him over the buffet, looking out at all the random food there with the eyes of someone who was going to try absolutely everything, but didn't know where to start with. Well. That was a lie. He knew where to start. First thing's first. Kadin walked over to some artfully folded pieces of what looked like it was probably sandwich meat that someone tried to make look fancy. He grabbed one and offered it to the hatchling, grinning when Cadmium spat out the toy.

There was one problem solved. Kadin bent down to scoop up the toy while Cadmium happily chomped down his food, stuffing the toy into his pocket to check for damage later. The drake hadn't had a chance to really tear into it so he hoped he'd just be able to retie some strings and still use it later tonight. In the meantime, Kadin grabbed a plate and started loading up on little finger sandwiches and quiches. He also grabbed some more slices of meat just to keep Cadmium entertained and maybe snack on for himself, too. The sarane kept reaching his skinny chicken neck over while Kadin tried to load up, getting in the way and being a general nuisance. Kadin tolerated it, for the most part, but it involved shoving his nose away from and awful lot of cheese and fruit and other things that would not be sarane friendly.

What was with it with pets not knowing what was good for them or not? Still, Kadin only had to tolerate it until his plate was full. He topped everything off with a couple of cheese slices and called it good, taking his load back over to the patch of wall he'd staked out at his own. Luckily there were also some chairs nearby so he didn't need to sit on the floor like some savage. He hooked his ankle around a chair and dragged it over to his alcove, placing the hatchling on the ground and his ass in the chair. This way the drake also wouldn't be able to bother him too much while he snacked. Whenever Cadmium did get to be too much, all he had to do was throw some sliced meat down the hallway and watch him run after it. He always returned for more, too, greedy bastard.

Kadin chuckled to himself, thinking that maybe parties weren't too bad, after all. Sure, he wasn't actually interacting with anyone, but he had free food and a sarane hatchling the entertain himself with. He could probably pass at least half an hour like this, but he wasn't sure what he was going to do after that. Still. That was a problem for future Kadin. The Kadin of the present could sit here and play a game with himself of trying to guess what the filling of each of these finger sandwiches and mini quiches were before eating them and THEN trying to guess what the filling actually was. He was pretty sure he'd had at least one quiche that was full of spam. One of the finger sandwiches had tasted suspiciously of peanut butter and jelly. Another one was literally just cucumber between two slides of white break. Who thought of this stuff?
