It took a long time for Renathan to figure out exactly when or even if he was going to be able to do one of the quests this month. He was so busy! Each year around the gifting holidays, people tended to buy high-ticket jewelry commissions from him, and it effectively booked him all the way until then. It was a stressful time of the year, but he was absolutely determined to get at least one or two days to hopefully find a quest and then complete it. It was a darn shame as the month wore on. He knew that he probably wasn't going to manage to get out and do anything for the community at this point. This was until, one of the colder, drier days of fall (quickly falling towards winter now it would seem, fall hardly lasted a second or two) that he found himself with an hour or two. He quickly performs the bond severing technique, and leaves Auburn at the Catseye for now, so that he can take along Flaik with him. He was trying to spread his time around his critters more commonly, and so far was far behind. [Renathan is using Sever Bond]

Renathan was incredibly happy that Flaik was much easier to deal with than she used to be. She was always at least a little sweet and 'polite' for a critter, but she was also skittish. Renathan wouldn't take her off of the lead while out in public any time soon, just in case... But right now she was fine. She was still a little wary of Renathan, but he hoped with a bit of extra work that she would be affectionate. Renathan hadn't even really had the chance to pet her for any prolonged amount of time yet, and she looked so soft! Being a mix of orbaru was probably a good chance that someday she'd make an excellent candiate for brushing and contests. If she didn't warm up to him much though, he may have to start looking into a more calm 'retirement' home for her...
The mammalian thought about these things as he walked to the quest board- so distracted that Flaik had to keep him from running into someone nearby!

They finally made it to the quest board, and surprisingly, it was pretty sparse. Of course, he was usually pretty late here. People tended to be very quick to snap up quests. The ones worth the most or with the best pay were usually grabbed relatively quickly, and perhaps after that the most fun ones. By this point, it wasn't uncommon to find only the scraps, or the least interesting ones. Renathan knew that it was his own fault for being this late. He chews the inside of his lip a bit as he glanced up at the little scraplets that were left. While doing this, he absent-mindedly turned over Flaik's lead in his head, wrapping it in his hand. There was really no need to make sure that the grip was better, because Flaik wasn't generally much of a fighter when it came to being lead. Flaik simply dips her head demurely.

One of the scraplets was especially lightly colored, as if it had not been sitting in the case for very long. Perhaps it was a good sign? The russet mammalian pulls his clothes closer to him, shivering as he reached out with his other hand to bring the scraplet closer to him. Despite his fur, it was quite cold outside. It was even getting to him! Supposedly, it was going to snow this weekend, as well. Renathan holds the little ivory scrap of paper in-between two claws and reads down the pretty scrawl. There was no way this scrap was here for very long, the ink looked nearly fresh! Once he was finished reading the scrap he turned immediately to go accept the quest. He lead Flaik around with him. She'd be a great choice to come with him on this particular quest, he figured! It would probably be one of the more fun ones he could have picked, anyway.

Renathan had a few things to do before running on down to the Herbologist's Delight. Indeed, gardens and such tended to slow down in the winter, and of course to his knowledge Alura was... Well, she was getting on up in years. She didn't seem to have any family either- at least none that Renathan had heard of in the town gossip mill. He wanted to make sure that the individuals that worked under him at the Catseye to let them know he'd be later than he meant to getting back. Then, after making sure that he had a coat to put on from the house (and dropping his beloved Auburn back off at the house and re-setting the spell), he took Flaik on over to the Herbologist's Delight. He knocked on the shop door before coming in, making sure to broadcast that Flaik had come with him. Seeing all of the plants reminded him that he really needed to do some gardening as soon as possible.

Renathan really did love the Herbologist's Delight. It was a homey shop to him, feeling more like his homeland than perhaps any other shop in the entire city. Of course, no one else had really been to his homeland (there weren't many of his people outside of their homeland, honestly) so he didn't expect it. However, the wet soil smell and the luscious scent of flowers made his eyes water, especially when it was darker outside. He grins beneath his mask and raises a palm in greeting. "Hello Miss Alura." He says, his hand on Flaik's fluffy spotted back. "I am here about your quest request! Just let me know what you need me to do, and I'll get right on it." Of course, he ran his own cafe, so he was more than happy to take Flaik over to a good spot for her to wait, and then go to sanitize his hands as soon as he saw the spot.

As Renathan got his hands sanitized so that he could work, Flaik watches everything around her with bright golden eyes. Everything seemed to amuse her, but she didn't get excited. Instead, she sits down and takes in all of the new and strange sights and smells. She was mostly a house critter, so she wasn't used to seeing so many exotic plants. She is very good and calm though, and simply sits to watch. Her golden eyes catch on a sleeping... Thing. It was a small creature, perhaps rodent-sized or larger? About half as big as she was. Some kind of plant thing, and it seemed to be quite tired. How interesting! She politely stayed back, a bit fearful, and a bit content.
Renathan turns and goes to put an apron on as it is handed to him. It had some sort of corny saying on it in common, which made him chuckle.

It wasn't difficult. Renathan had a lot of fun listening to the stories that elders often told, so it wasn't anything new for him to listen to Alura. This time of year, people that didn't really have families often got very lonely, so he was happy to be of service. Really, he was just that kind of person anyway. He often got lonely himself- he never really had much of a family after he left his homeland. Perhaps if he had time, he sit around with some other old folks during the month. For now, though, Renathan was slowly getting towards the 'actual making cookies' part of the entire ordeal. He knew he was mostly here to give company to the particularly friendly shopkeep, but he was sure that they did need to get started at some point. He nearly had forgotten that Flaik was there, she was being so quiet and polite!

Renathan was very used to being around critters that got bored easily, so he was a little anxious when he noticed that Flaik was just kind of... Sitting in a the last sunbeams of the early evening in the winter. Auburn was sometimes like this, but most often she was cuddling into his mane or hopping about or swooping around... He could go on and on about her. He loved her, and was used to her, so now he wasn't all that used to critters like Flaik. Had he any other pet that was quite like that?
The mammalian is finally able to gather the items from the cupboards that Alura was mentioning. She was making creaky noises when she attempted to bend down to them. Apparently the weather change was getting to her joints a bit. Renathan laughs when he nearly drops some of the flour- getting some of it on his apron and sneezing when he looked down at it.

The rest of the afternoon went by relatively quickly. Renathan and Alura made several batches of cookies between the two of them. Alura gave out some of the batches of cookies, sending them with a courier to the sick, poor, and orphans it would seem. Apparently this was something that was done quite often. Renathan was glad to have the company. He realized that he had felt... Lonely, yes, lonely, recently. He certainly was enjoying this quest, when he was afraid he would have been left in the dregs. After they were finished for the day, Renathan helped Alura clean up as well, catching out of the corner of his eye while he was doing so the fact that Flaik was watching the little critter that Alura kept around the shop.
After the cleanup was done, Renathan listened to a few more stories, and then took Flaik home. It was getting quite late after all!
