–10 years ago–It was the first day of the rest of her life. Leaving hadn’t been an easy choice to make, but in the end, the Mammalian had decided that it would be for the best. Perhaps she’d learn something? And the Labs had reassured her that she was welcome to return in the future – they would care for her creatures in the meantime. So it was that Kodai had slipped off into the wilderness with only a Shijin by her side. Well, perhaps “wilderness” was a bit of a misnomer – she was still close enough to engage with civilization, if she so chose. But choosing not to was a large part of the reason why she was out here. Civilization was too greedy, in her opinion. The focus on hoarding large amounts of money, and valuing such individuals over good, honest people… She didn’t like it. And now, she wouldn’t have to deal with it. “C’mon, Shuu! Let’s go!” she called, beginning to run off into the forest. The Shijin, buoyed by the Mammalian’s excitement, zipped off after her, scattering shadows through the trees. Where were they going? Who knew? But the feeling of freedom… it was almost as if the both of them had wings. [Closed backstory and leveling RP.] [Post 1/Words 207] [Kodai: Level 0.1] [Shuu Level 0.1/Loyalty 20]

Nothing could last forever, however. While Kodai – and by extension, Shuu – remained upbeat as they traveled further into the trees, the absolute giddiness began to fade and make way for critical thought. Slowing down to a walk, the Mammalian began to wonder what she ought to do next. Living away from civilization wasn't just all play, after all. There was a lot of hard work involved.
"Hmm," she hummed, jumping over a fallen branch. "What do you think, Shuu? What should we do now?"
The Shijin couldn't answer verbally, of course, or even provide much guidance. Sharing emotions could be useful, but not when it came to questions like the one Kodai was asking. Still, Shuu's little echo of uncertainty made Kodai laugh, feeling great that she could interact with her companion so freely.
"Well, let's see if we can find a source of water, first! That's going to be the most important thing. Even the best shelter in the world won't help you if you don't have any water!"
So saying, the Mammalian took off again, her Shijin hovering along behind her.

It wasn't long before the pair happened upon a small stream bubbling through the trees. Kodai clapped her hands in delight, bouncing in place.
"Oh, this is perfect, Shuu!" she told the Shijin, beaming. "We'll need to purify it before we can drink it, but... that shouldn't be too hard, right?"
Slipping a hand into her vest pocket, the Mammalian drew out a tiny book, showing it to her companion.
"Look, I got this pocket guide before we left. This'll tell me how to do everything I need to do to live out here."
Shuu hovered above the minuscule pages, lost in silent thought. Kodai felt so confidently about this, which was nice, but would it really be enough?
Sensing the Shijin's concern, Kodai laughed again.
"Don't worry, we'll be fine! And, you know, if we really need to go back, we can," she assured her companion, though she sounded dismissive of such an idea. "We're not that far out."
Satisfied, Shuu brightened up again, making Kodai smile in turn.
"That's the spirit! Now, what should we do next... Oh, let's follow this stream! Maybe we'll find a cave to use nearby!"
