Renathan was generally a little late getting to the quest board each month. Some months he was later than others, but this month it was somewhere around the middle of that time period. He'd managed to get some time off a tad earlier than he otherwise would have been able to since there was a lull in activity during the winter months after the holidays. The russet mammalian had also managed to wrangle his beloved balgor Lisle. He hardly ever got to spend any one on one time with Lisle since the balgor had become a father. He had his paws tied up with cubs so often! However, it had made Lisle happier, so the mammalian was happy for him.
The pair make their way amicably to the quest board, not speaking between theirselves. Lisle had matured quite a bit in the last year, and he was not nearly so talkative as he was before. The streets were pretty sparse as people hurried (bundled in coats to ward off the cold) to their destinations.

The russet mammalian spent some amount of the walk grumbling to himself mentally about how little time he had for things he enjoyed doing now. He had very little time to get anything done, and so much to do! Despite the fact that there was a lull during the winter months in the City (perhaps some of the denizens were of peoples that spent the cold months in torpor?). He really didn't have enough time to do many of the more involved quests that would undoubtedly be available, or at least he hoped they would be. For all he knew, the entirety of the city fell into the frosty lull of winter. He sighs, and it is audible to Lisle, who tilts his head slightly and regards the russet mammalian with curiosity, but didn't speak anything about it. Lisle was, after all, a smart creature of hardly any words at all.

The quest board is as barren as Renathan had somewhat expected. Something about this made him a little sad. Perhaps he had hoped to have gotten here with the crowds. When he looked up past the cold grey of winter and up at the actual board itself, he was a bit shocked. His mouth opens beneath the mask in an 'oh' as he realized that the entire thing was COVERED in quests. Had anyone been here this month? He turns to glance at the little shop across from the quest board, wondering perhaps for a moment if he should check in there first. Instead, he lets out a little puff of air that shimmered for a moment like vanilla smoke in the air, and then he decides ultimately not to. He wasn't really the biggest fan of this particular shopkeeper, in fact.
The balgor has noticed that Renathan is stopped, but there appears to be no danger around. He rumbles a gentle noise and nudges Renathan's palm with a lowered head.

Renathan was always at least a little embarrassed when one of his animal companions had to wake him out of a thoughtful state, but it happened all the time anyway. Renathan takes the moment to pet Lisle on the head, and finds himself comforting the great beast. "It is okay Lisle, don't worry." Though the words were directed towards Lisle, they did more help to Renathan instead. "Which one do you think we should do, bud?" Renathan asks to the empty air, since Lisle was more interested in getting ear scritches than in replying to anything. Of course, Lisle couldn't exactly read, either. Instead, Renathan steps forward and begins the daunting task of reading each and every quest slip, or at least that was his intention. Some of the slips were things that Renathan was simply not suited to doing, or at least that didn't interest him. Those he barely spent time on.

Some of the other quests were more seasonal; some had to do with the bouts of snow that had fallen recently. Renathan didn't really have a lot of time to be shoveling snow, especially since the addresses indicated on some of these (while the russet mammalian had not physically been to each and every one of them of course) were well known to be on land that was quite extensive. No, those would not do! Renathan frowned as he went down the row. So many people needed help with so many different tasks, and there were simply not enough people out and about this time of year to really do them all. He was only one person himself, and quite the busy one at that! He finally selects on that has a little promise- someone needing something done for a new shop they were considering opening up. Renathan petted Lisle as he considered this possibility.

Lisle raises his head up eventually and watches with his bright blue eyes as he tries to figure out what Renathan is doing. It was not uncommon for the strange individual (HIS strange person) to do things that didn't exactly make sense to him. The russet mammalian appeared to be regarding the wall very carefully, and Lisle wasn't exactly sure how to place that. He couldn't smell anything of interest that had to do with the wall, save for being covered in things that smelled particularly humanoid. The faint scent of some sort of metallic and chemical smell mix floated from the wall, and that probably meant that something about it was not natural. He curls his nose up at it a bit, and takes one carefully metered step back. Renathan finally seems pleased with something, the stress melting out of his shoulders. Lisle watches as 'his' person takes one of the flappy things off of the wall.

Renathan brings the paper closer to his face, and he touches his fore and middle fingers on his left hand to the underside of his chin as he considered. This one would be quicker than a lot of the others, but it would require more work. It was an invitation to, of all things, a sled race! He had no creatures that were really trained to pull a sled, at least not anymore. He'd been downsizing for a while. He was, after all, not doing quite as well of late as he would have liked. The last few years had been... Really depressing, to put it mildly. Renathan sighed. With no creatures that could pull a sled, he'd have to make another selection, and there wasn't much else that had piqued his interest at all. He turns to put the paper back up on the cork board, and then realizes- wait, Lisle... Lisle might be able to help.

Renathan had caught Lisle's eyes when he had looked over to the side, and the idea had spontaneously manifested in that serendipitous way that ideas tended to do whenever one was in a bit of a perceived pickle. At the very least, Lisle was generally amicable to just about every idea that Renathan had. "Hey buddy, would you be interested in helping me out with a quest this month?" Renathan had been fairly certain before that he would not be utilizing Lisle for any quest; most of the time he tended to do quests on his own anyway. However, this would give them some more time hanging out, which wasn'tt something that Renathan got to do very often with Lisle anyway. Lisle tilts his head and makes a soft rumbling chest noise, squinting his eyes in a fashion that gave Renathan his answer. "You'll be doing more of the work, I'm afraid." Renathan said, tone apologetic.

One of Renathan's most poignant concerns was that Lisle did still have that injured hind leg to contend with. Whenever he was a Chiryma, the injured leg had made it incredibly difficult for him to walk. It had made Renathan feel incredibly guilty, especially since the old wound was something that he felt like was his fault. What had he been thinking, using the mines as good a place as any to raise baby creatures? He'd done it for so long that he had let his guard down. Now that Lisle was four legged, the fact that the injury was a hind leg actually was a good thing. Most carnivorous mammalian creatures tended to put most of their weight on their front legs more heavily than their hind, and because of this he walked just fine, with an ever so slight limp.
But would Lisle be able to help him with this sledding quest?

Lisle was a trooper, from what Renathan could tell. Whenever Renathan passed over him with an expression of worry behind his mask (that Lisle could not see, but of course creatures that were sufficiently used to their masters tended to not have to see that sort of thing to know) Lisle gave a warm and comforting purr and rubbed his head once again into the underside of Renathan's palm. Renathan patted him and chuckled. "Okay Lisle, I see that you at least are confident!" The russet mammalian warmly replied to Lisle's actions. "Alright, so let's go I guess. The sled race is..." He scans the paper for a time and date. "A few days from now, at two in the afternoon." He wondered if there would be snow; he hadn't been listening to the radio lately, but it did seem to be snowing quite a lot recently.

After that, the pair went home. A few days pass, with Renathan being quite busy at the shop, at least in a small burst of smaller orders. The day fast approached for the sled race. Renathan had never seen snow before he moved to Pethia. He really didn't know anything about sleds, and only knew the barest information about how snow really functioned. He tried not to go out in it with any sort of vehicle (including riding the equillion he used to own) because it was slippery. Admittedly, he'd fallen on it more than a few times before. He was a little nervous, but he hoped with Lisle's sharp claws that they would be fine enough. He also hoped that they had a sled big enough for Lisle! "Alright Lisle, let's go!" He said, calling Lisle out to the yard. Lisle seemed pretty excited enough to be going out.

It doesn't take the pair very long to make their way out across the snow to the place indicated by the quest slip. It of course took them longer than it would have had if the streets had been clear instead, however it didn't take near as long as Renathan had planned for. They both stand at the bottom of what was a surprisingly tall hillock just outside of town, or rather in a farming district. Renathan wasn't familiar with this part of the Labs City, as it was on the opposite side of where he lived, and on the opposite side of where he would go through to visit Mintaka down in the Canyon of Eterra. He wondered vaguely if perhaps some of the snow had been brought here in some fashion to help build it up to appropriate levels?
"You ready to go on up to the start line, boyo?" Renathan asks Lisle.

Lisle rumbles his response in his typical balgorine fashion, and the pair begin the trek. As expected, Renathan had a little bit of difficulty trudging through the snow, but Lisle seemed to have an easy time climbing up. It was only once the pair crested the hillock that Renathan caught sight of what would have been a relatively easy climb that was obviously intended to those that would be joining the sled race. Renathan rubs the back of his neck sheepishly, and Lisle seems to notice (Renathan can tell because he was certain that if Lisle was humanoid instead, he would be laughing in response) as well. "Well, I'm not always the most observant, it would seem." He murmurs, before moving over to the first couple of individuals to be there. He struck up a quick conversation with the individual about the weather, and then whenever it was polite moved off to wait.

Renathan wasn't much of a hyper talkative person when he wasn't at work, but he knew how to be amicable at least. As the others came up the hillock (including a person that seemed to be the officiant of the entire endeavor) Renathan mostly stayed near Lisle, patting him gently on the muzzle and scratching under his chin. The sleds were apparently being housed nearby in an old barn that probably used to be used for Murp, as Renathan found out once they started getting everything together. By far, Renathan's Lisle was the largest mammal critter there, so they hoped that there would be a large enough sled, or at least something to help him get together a good sized harness for Lisle to be able to compete. As the group of people moved over to the shed, Renathan voiced these concerns to the person that was running the event.

Luckily for Renathan, his choice of pet assistant for this particular endeavor was not going to cause any issues. Individuals had expected people to bring anything from vulticus teams to wiurns, so there was a variety of sleds to choose from in all kinds of sizes. With a little assistance from a more knowledgeable individual, Renathan was able to find the perfect (or at least the best choice of) sled to have Lisle hooked to. With help from another individual (everyone seemed to be in pretty good cheer considering, and Renathan was very thankful for all of the assistance he was receiving) helped him get Lisle all fixed up. Renathan carefully patted Lisle down, and then lowered his head to Lisle's forehead. "Alrighty boyo, let's get over to the start line." Renathan said to him. Lisle rumbles, and follows Renathan with his head held up high. He did seem a little surprised when the sled followed him, but he quickly adjusted.
