Kadin wasn't sure what to think when he got the flyer. He'd seen the decorations popping up here and there, but he didn't really know what they meant. So he ignored them and went about his business. But when he went to the quest board to see what jobs needed doing, that was when they got him. That was when he stopped a bit short. He didn't ask any questions about what the Incursion was, although he was curious. He just listened and looked and watched and waited and considered. A bonfire? That could be fun. He still had no idea what they hell everyone was apparently celebrating, but he didn't see any reason to say no at getting some free food and watching some fireworks. And, when he brought up the idea to Mori, she seemed game, too. So apparently they were doing this. Even though he still wasn't sure what the big fuss was all about.

He'd get Mori to explain it to him, he figured. She knew more stuff about the labs than he did, considering that she still had all of her memories. Sometimes he'd catch her looking at him, a sort of sad look on her face, and he'd wonder what she was thinking about. Who she was remembering. He wasn't sure why, but he didn't think he was the person to raise her. Sometimes she'd even be looking a bit off to the side of where he was, seemingly staring at nothing, but something hiding in his shadows. He tried not to question it too much. Luckily, the topic of today wasn't too heavy and didn't seem to cross any wires with whatever it was that made her sad sometimes. Instead, today was something... pleasant, almost, for a given value of pleasant. At least, if whatever they were celebrating hadn't happened, none of them would be here right now.

He wasn't quite sure what to make of that information, so he asked her to explain some more. With a smile, Mori agreed, as long as he kept making his way towards the bonfire and promised to supply her with all the snacks she wanted. Figuring it was an easy compromise, Kadin agreed, and off they went. So apparently the labs hadn't always been here. And before they were like they were now, there was someone else in charge. Someone else who had founded the labs and made it basically like it was today. And even if they were no longer around anymore, most of the people here still remembered what it was like to have the mad scientist and a couple other colorful characters in their midst. Kadin listened as Mori explained, going into detail about things that he should probably remember but didn't, and he felt content about it.

It was hard to imagine a time when the labs had much less creatures than they had now. Apparently even Mori, for as long as she had been here, wasn't even close to the oldest of creatures. The wiurn were the first of them, of course. And not the more recent wiurn, the ones that made up the majority of his kennel. No, there were the oldest wiurn, like Kimu and Chime, who had been here first. Kadin considered what that must have been like, to be brought to life as the first of the experiments. What it must have been like to watch the first of them die out, to go extinct, so that new life could move in on their previous places. He wondered if it might be worth it to have some revived wiurn, just to see what they were like, but quickly dismissed the idea out of hand.

He had enough to take care of already. And while Mori was telling him about all of the species that had been and now are, but only different, Kadin wandered around the outskirts of the celebration. He didn't really want to talk to anyone he didn't know and he didn't know anyone here, so he figured that it'd be safest to just stay mostly on the edges and hang out with Mori, for lack of any better ideas. Still, he kept his promises. He'd go into the thick of things to get her any treats she thought might look good. And, of course, since the treats were human sized, he'd end up eating most of them after she took a bite the size of a crumb. Cotton candy, cakes covered in sugar, fried dough with treats stuffed inside, Kadin ended up sample most of the food there before he even knew what was happening.

She couldn't have planned for that, could she? Kadin looked over at her in suspicion, but Mori was simply directing him to a new stall that she apparently wanted to try, oblivious to his suspicions and anything else besides exploring the crowd. Kadin sighed and resigned himself to it, not super pleased, but unwilling to upset her by kicking up a fuss. He really wasn't a huge fan of crowds, especially since everyone in them were unfamiliar to him. Perhaps he'd known some of them before, back when he actually had his memories, but as it was this was just a night of unnecessary stress, as far as he was concerned. But the night wasn't really about him, it was about Mori. She was the one who really wanted to be here. Sometimes Kadin worried that he was holding her back. It was hard for her to go into crowds as a harachiu.

It was much easier when she had a human or a large pet with her to make sure that she didn't go so unnoticed that people would hurt her by accident. Kadin was out with her tonight and that helped make sure that she was safe, but he wondered if she'd be happier going with other harachiu or even by herself. Every now and then it'd look like she wanted to talk to someone in the crowd. He didn't recognize any of them. And instead of talking to them, she seemed to rethink her decision and come back to him, pointing out the next stall she wanted to go to instead. Maybe she used to have someone else she could go to these things with. Someone who would talk to people with her and try new things happily. But right now she only had him and he was going to do his best.

He wanted to let her see everything that she wanted to. So they continued walking through the crowds and eating strange food for a good while longer, only talking to each other and the vendors and not much else. Eventually Mori seemed to take pity on him and direct him towards a cluster of trees that a few people were sitting underneath, spread out enough that he wouldn't actually have to sit close to anyone. Kadin sat down, relieved, and munching on a candy apple that had been their latest purchase. Mori sat on his knee, sparing her skirt the grass stains she'd surely get from sitting next to him, and stared up at the night sky, lost in thought. Kadin ate and thought and watched her, too, wondering if he should say something. He wasn't sure what to say, but there had been a question burning at the tip of his tongue ever since he came back.

Well. Ever since they told him he'd come back. He finished off the last of his candy apple and tossed the stick towards a trash can nearby, frowning slightly when he made the shot. Mori was still looking at the stars.
"Hey." He tried. That was enough for Mori to look in his direction, tilting her head as if she were curious what he had to say. Kadin hesitated here, not sure where to go next with this. He still wasn't even sure what he wanted to say. But, eventually, he gathered his courage under that steady stare and asked, "Do you want to talk about it?"
Mori stared at him for a little while longer, not saying anything. Then, she finally asked, "Talk about what?"
Kadin winced. He didn't know what he was doing. "You know. It. What it was like. Uh, before? Do you ever want to talk about it?"

Mori hummed to herself. If she was surprised, she didn't let it show, instead turning her face away to look back up at the night sky.
"No."
"Oh, uh." Shit. Now what the fuck should he do. "Ok. S-"
"And yes." Kadin stared at her in confusion, shutting his mouth and deciding to just. Wait. She couldn't leave him hanging with that. Eventually, Mori sighed, her tiny shoulders moving up and down again as she looked from the sky to the grass in front of her. "It's not something I want to burden you with, not really. And even if I were to explain it, you wouldn't understand. You're here now. That's all that really matters, at the end of it all."
Kadin frowned. That wasn't what he imagined happening when he finally tried to have this conversation with her. But before he could say anything else, fireworks burst above their heads, silencing any more conversation.
