Who’s ready for round 2?
In the last poll, esoteric creatures one, beating out amphibians by a nose! This time, we’re working on refining that concept- after all, there’s a lot that can be covered by the term “esoteric”. Clarifications on the category are below! Just like last time, this poll will be open for 3 days, locking at Noon, server time, on February 20th!
Biological- It’s a... a... mammal? Reptile? Bird thing? You’re at least pretty sure it’s an animal? (This category includes purely biological animals that nevertheless don’t fit into easily identified taxonomy. Examples of this include drej, ghaenelt, and tzaru.)
Alien- This creature is out of this world- literally! This thing is definitely alive, but there’s no way it’s made out of anything from around here. At least it seems to be ok with our atmosphere? (Perhaps slightly redundant with biological, these creatures have obviously otherworldly origins and designs, clearly not meant for terrestrial life nor made of the usual carbon compounds... but by god will we feed them treats and pat them on the head when they learn their names! For this, think of creatures like grey aliens, Deoxys, Wayne Barlowe’s Expedition, HR Giger, the weirder Cthulhu mythos critters, etc.)
Cyborg- Not quite beast and not quite machine. Wires feed into pulsing organs, muscles tug bionic eyes into turning, tubes bubble with liquids both biological and artificial. (Creatures that are a combo of robotic and biological. Think test tubes, mutants, wires plugged in where wires probably shouldn’t be but it looks cool so there you go.)
Amorphic- These things don’t really seem to want to take one shape. Sure they can, but when you can be anything, why would you stick with just one? (Creatures that have a shifting form. Not necessarily made of meat either. Examples include shadow lurkers, living liquid metal, and younger corpse constructs. If it has a lot of goop and uses it to great use, chances are it’s in this category.)
Ethereal- These creatures are... not quite there. You aren’t sure if they’re ghosts or angels or from another dimension, but they can’t quite be touched and waver before your very eyes. (Creatures that are ethereal or ghostly in form. Include specters, ethereal golossle, shijin, etc. Can be the spirit of something dead, but aren’t necessarily!)
Magic- Creatures made of imagination and magic, spirits of nature or perhaps gremlins in your computer. Cute fluttery friends or things whose teeth you realize gleam just as brightly as their fairy dust after you’ve already eaten their food and given them your name. (You know, magic stuff. Involves fairies, nature spirits, demons, familiars, crystal balls and ever burning flames, that sort of thing.)
Artificial- Well, it’s not a robot, you can tell that much. You’re pretty sure a robot wouldn’t be spending so much time trying to gnaw your fingers off, and it has way too many opinions and favorite nap spots to be an empty machine. And yet... you’ve never seen a book move around on its own before. Or drool on you. (Creatures that aren’t made of flesh but aren’t the traditional HxR robots either. Think treasure chest mimics, living dolls, books that flap around on their pages like wings, etc.)
