{Bugs, huh?} said Avander. Aster could hear the derision in the Wiurn's voice - or maybe it was just amusement, but if it was, it was definitely amusement at Aster's expense. And Aster supposed he couldn't blame Avander for that sentiment. After all, the Wiurn had accompanied him here to help fulfill a request... A request that, as it turned out, a Wiurn was completely ill suited to assist with in any way. "Hey," Aster said, making a mostly doomed effort to defend himself. "You never know. One time we had to deal with giant bugs, remember?" {Right, but you'd think they would mention that in the posting,} Avander pointed out. {Did they?} "No," Aster had to admit. Avander had the right of it there. There was no indication of any sort that the bugs would be anything other than an ordinary size. Which was how they had ended up in this ridiculous situation. 1

{I mean,} Avander said. {I can try to help. But I think I'd probably break most of the plants here, and I don't think that's a good idea.} He surveyed the garden, which was filled with rows upon rows of berry bushes, all of them infested with bugs. The infestation wasn't so bad that the bushes were teeming with them, but it sure didn't take Aster long to find them when he went looking for the damned things.
Aster sighed. "Yeah, just... Don't do anything," he said. Avander had the right of it. This was like bringing a flood to water a flowerpot. It wasn't that Avander didn't have attacks that were more pinpoint in nature, but at the size discrepancy that he was facing, not all the accuracy in the world would have preserved the surroundings from collateral damage.
Avander was, of course, not at all bothered by this development.

In fact, you could have said he was rather pleased. He didn't have to do any work, but he got to watch Aster running around and chasing after bugs. Which was probably why he wasn't complaining more about having been dragged out all the way here, come to that.
As for Aster, well, things hadn't turned out the way he hoped, but he was already here, and it wasn't as if he was himself a stranger to hard work. The person who had asked for the assistance had even handed him a jug of natural, plant-friendly solution to spray onto the bugs to get them to drop off the plant. From there, the job of actually getting rid of them was Aster's problem, but it wasn't as if he couldn't just step on them and be done with it.
"Here goes," Aster said, picking a plant and getting ready to spray.

It wasn't really hard work, just... time consuming, and kind of unpleasant. Aster didn't consider himself squeamish, but seeing a lot of bugs in one place was just sort of an uncomfortable experience. He wasn't alone in this, that much he understood. He had the feeling that Avander was getting a kick out of watching his unhappy reactions, but so long as Avander didn't make a nuisance of himself, Aster was content to just let him have his little fun.
The solution sure did the trick though. The bugs didn't care for it, and they dropped off the plants almost immediately as soon as they came in contact with it. It might have been more interesting if the bugs weren't so off putting in and of themselves... And if he didn't have to hurry and step on the bugs, before they could relocate to somewhere that was harder for him to access.

There were a few cases where one of them had almost managed to get away because they had been quick on the recovery. Fortunately he had managed, narrowly, to off them in time, but those instances still served as a reminder that he had to be attentive if he wanted to do a good job.
It took the better part of an entire afternoon, and by the end of it Aster considered himself lucky that this place wasn't bigger. But at last the bugs were done away with, and they could collect their payment and go home.
{Invite me again next time,} Avander said. {Maybe these board jobs aren't so bad after all.}
"If I invite you next time, it'll be because there's real work for you to do," Aster said. Next time he would read the description a lot more closely before deciding who to take with him on the job.
