Renathan had worked pretty hard for the rest of the bulk of the month since the first quest he'd taken. Life in the city was slowly starting to pick up again after the winter freeze, and if Renathan ever saw snow again he figured it would be far too soon! Auburn was already starting to dislike the heat, so Renathan had taken to giving her some frozen treats to allow her to cool down some. Auburn was sitting on his shoulder as Renathan was feeding her little frozen treats and walking out to the quest board. He wanted to take on one more quest this month and do the absolute best he could. Hopefully he had some time! He wasn't sure if anything would be left this late in the month! Renathan took the long way around to the quest board today, since he loved the weather that was currently happening. It was so nice and softly warm outside!

Earlier on during the month, Renathan had noted that there were several different quests on the board. He had selected the easiest one for him to work on that he could find- one that he already sort of assumed that he knew what to do about. This time, he wanted to find something more difficult and worthwhile to work on. He wasn't entirely sure what he would find once he got to the quest board, but he hoped to also find something that Auburn would be able to help him with. For some time now, he had mostly been doing quests with other companions of his, and he felt a little bad about not bringing Auburn with him! She was just so small that he was afraid she'd get hurt if he decided to do a difficult quest. However, Renathan wanted to give her some attention, so he hoped for something that would be challenging, but simple for Auburn at the very least today.

Auburn was seemingly enjoying the long walk. She ruffled her feathers whenever the wind picked up; she puffed up at passing by critters in an attempt to goad play without upsetting Renathan (who wasn't the happiest whenever she did that and she knew it!), and she ate her little frozen treats whenever Renathan handed them over. "Auburn, aren't you being a sweetie today?" Renathan says to her softly as she nudges his neck just above his braids. "Hey-hey, stop that!" He said while chuckling whenever Auburn tipped up her head just a little too much and accidentally knocked off his mask. Luckily there were not any onlookers at the time, and he was able to settle the mask back over his face after having caught it. "You're being a little mess." He accuses her. "Better get there a little quicker before you get any worse." He says as he decides and then doubles his pace.

Renathan still gets a good workout walking along the sidewalks in the town. He'd decided to cut out most of the walk, but still had a decent distance to go before he'd get there. He was already regretting the fact that he had chosen this route because Auburn was being a little bit of a mess. Of course it made sense for her to do so. It had been a long while since Renathan had taken her out on anything other than a trip to the Catseye or to play in their yard, so Auburn was being a bit excitable because they were going somewhere else. Renathan used to take her on lots of little 'adventures'. Maybe it would be a good idea to keep doing that in the future to avoid her acting so terrible.
Luckily Renathan was able to avoid most people politely down the street. Most were too busy to even raise a hand in greeting anyway.

Auburn chills out a bit more as Renathan nears the block towards the quest shop. She seemed to have gotten the wild hair trimmed, or however the common-speakers tended to state that, and was now simply Crouching on Renathan's shoulder. The strange Izer held on with her hind talons and her clawed front legs, and she did often give Renathan slight scratches. Renathan planned to eventually make himself a shoulder sling made with thick leather to fix the issue, but he always seemed to put off that project for the sake of his Customers' projects. He was reminded in times like these that he needed to expedite that plan! Trying not to grumble about her being a little too rough with her claws, he rounds the final corner to see the quest board just outside of the QI shop, and he sighed. Shoot, there were so many people out there! He had just gotten Auburn to calm down a bit.

As quickly as she had spun down, Auburn spun right back up to high energy mode. Renathan sighs, but gives her a quick pet on the head anyway despite her bobbing in excitement and flashing her wings. "Couldn't you stay calmed down for a moment little one?" He asks her, voice soft. Not that anyone would be able to hear him, with how loud they were all being grouped up as they were. People were taking the little slips off of the board left and right. Renathan was glad on one hand that the city had woken up from the winter torpir months, but he wasn't really used to seeing so many people at once, and it made him a little light headed. Still, he pushes on, until he is standing on the outskirts of the group. He raises a palm and tries a couple of times to gently try to pass through little openings in the gathering, to no avail.

Renathan gives up after a little while of attempting. He wasn't entirely sure whether to leave and come back tomorrow (difficult- he really didn't have a lot of time off this month either) or to simply wait for people to clear out (would there be any quests left?) so he simply mills around for a moment away from the crowd, closer to the QI. After a moment or two though, he notices that not only has someone come around the corner (more people? he was hoping the crowd would clear out, not grow!) but they seem to immediately gravitate towards him. He murmurs something beneath his breath. He didn't really have the energy for a long conversation today, that was why he was going out with his familiar, Auburn, instead of hanging out in the Catseye. He looks pointedly away from the person in an attempt to dissuade them, pretending to be very interested in a nearby poster.

This individual was a fae, and what had to be an elderly one. Fae were not the most common, even in this city, so Renathan was very pointedly not going to stare. Instead, he feeds Auburn another frozen treat, so that she could stay cool even in the more mild heat of the early spring day while continuing to mind his own business. He was not going to be unfriendly, but he was trying to gather up as much energy as he could because it certainly looked like this was going to be a social interaction regardless of how tired he was from all the social interactions he had at work. His days off were his recuperation days!
The elder fae was green-haired, and before Renathan could really gather much more information about her from the corner of his eye, he saw that she was waving at him. Oh. Oh no, he thought. Auburn was already turning towards her with excitement in her grey eyes.

Renathan was very happy on one hand that Auburn was generally excited about meeting new people, but sometimes he wished that she wasn't so excited. She had great behavior, he'd made sure to train her to be polite to new folks. However, he hadn't expected her to like, and BEG FOR pets from strangers sometimes. Where did she get it from, huh? The elder lady was obviously trying to get his attention now, so he gathers a breath before smiling forcefully beneath the mask and pretending to 'notice' her and turn towards her. Wow, he felt like a butt today (a little uncharacteristic for him!) but no one could be perfect all the time could they? Let alone him.
"Oh, hello." He said politely. "What can I do for you today, miss?" He hopes that his smile shows through his voice, though it is obscured beneath the mask he wore.

Most of the time, people that did not know Renathan tended to avoid him. He figured that it was partially his mask, since Pethians did not wear them often- and partially the fact that he was a mammalian (claws probably)- and partially because he had antlers. All of these things were intimidating to most individuals perhaps that were different than him... Even on their own! But he was also a tall fellow, and that caused most of the problem. Whoever this woman was, she was not afraid of him in the slightest. As soon as the individual begins speaking, Renathan's eyebrows nit together. He feeds Auburn another frozen treat to try to keep her from harassing the elderly fae, and listens intently. What friend was this individual speaking about? He had vague memories of helping an older blind woman with her garden, but that had been last year, hadn't it? It does make him feel like maybe he should help...

"I'd like to hear more details first, but I generally like to help!" Renathan answers, perhaps a little too quickly. Was this another individual wishing to put up a quest? He chances a glance quickly over the quest board- nearly all of the slips were taken now, and people were beginning to move off. Yeah, he probably wasn't going to be able to get any kind of good chance at a quest. Renathan looks back at the elderly fae, and nods for her to continue. Auburn is nibbling on her treat and sitting on Renathan's shoulder politely while the elderly woman was speaking. Apparently this woman had a garden that was over-run with some kind of plant monsters? And she 'totally didn't know how that happened'. Uh-huh, Renathan thought, yeah right. He could see pretty easily through that. However, a quest was a quest, and the goods were generally worth it.

Regardless of the reasoning for the dangerous creatures having gotten into the garden (it wasn't uncommon for people that were interested in magic or dangerous beasts to get in over their heads when experimenting, and that was his guess in this situation), Renathan knew that if the creatures were not removed somehow that they may endanger people that lived or worked nearby. "Near the edge of town, huh?" He asks, his voice a little overly friendly. But... All she wanted was flowers? Not dispatching the dangerous creatures- but flowers? Yup. This person was definitely a mage, he thought. He manages to narrowly keep himself from tsking, and instead holds his tongue while she continues and shows him a picture. He taps the underside of his chin as he looks at the picture. Auburn was a bit nosy, and stuck her beak up under his jaw in an attempt to look as well.

Renathan did actually manage to keep Auburn from knocking his mask off with her beak since he remembered what she had done earlier. Still, he wasn't sure that he recognized the flowers despite having looked at them and felt like they were familiar. Still, he listened to the rest of the spiel of the quest-giver. Hopefully this quest had already been registered and was legitimate. He'd never had issues with quest fraud before but wouldn't really put it past some folks. So, the lady didn't know how the creatures got there- but somehow the flowers would help? He was a little bit doubtful about that, but heck, if all he had to do was get some flowers in a garden of all things- plant monsters or no he was sure he could do it. Auburn was pretty good with her frosty breath too, so he was sure that together they could take on some plants!

He wasn't entirely sure what the lady was offering, either- something 'good' from the gardens? Was he going to be doing this for a handful of veggies, one of those odd flowers, or perhaps something different? He didn't have a lot of time for gardening these days, so perhaps it would be worth it... At the very least, if this 'quest' was verified, Renathan would be getting quest points and those were always worthwhile and the main reason why he did quests in the first place. "Some weapons, huh? That bad." He said, thoughtfully. He finally nods. "Okay, we'll do it. I'm sure even without weapons that Auburn and I can take them." He motioned towards his beloved izer, and then grinned beneath the mask confidently. Fire and ice- all the bane of most plant beasts. He was sure that they could take them by theirselves! "Okay ma'am, where is the garden located?"

After receiving the correct address, Renathan bid the eldery fae woman adieu and then moved away from the absolute spectacle that was the once overcrowded quest board. Only a scrap or two of paper was left on it, and Renathan was glad to have been lucky enough to receive a quest anyway. He was a little bit off-put by the woman; why had he been singled out? Was it because he was standing by himself? Was it because he looked intimidating? Was it because Auburn was very obviously cold-oriented and probably trained? Renathan had no idea. He did seem pretty strong-looking to others (it was kind of just the way his people tended to look until they got elderly, they were a naturally lanky beast race) but it was odd. Was she trying to trick him?
He wasn't entirely sure whether he was walking into a trap or not, but he set his sights on the coordinates anyway.
