Renathan had been downsizing his own critter collection for a long time now, but had never really brought any by the APAA because he had never really been to the facility before. He didn't really know what to expect from the place, and he was not planning on sending critters to a place that he'd never visited before. So one day he decided to go visit, just for a little while to see how the place ran and if he could perhaps volunteer at the place in his freetime in the future. He'd been pretty depressed recently, so he figured it would be a healthy change of pace to perhaps find another working outlet. He'd heard that the place took volunteers, so really he had no excuse not to visit.
There was a glass door. It looked very modern, the russet mammalian realized. He looked at the blue sign in common and read- Abandoned Pet Adoption Agency. "Oh." Renathan said, mouth open beneath his mask ever so slightly. The word 'Abandoned' kind of stung- he tried not to think too much about a certain issue he'd had relatively recently. He reaches out for the doorknob and wraps his leathery palm around it. Then, he pulls.

The door comes open with the smoothness of silk, and Renathan is hit with the intense smell of animals. Renathan wrinkles his nose and sneezes, catching it in his elbow. He shakes his head a little bit and fights the urge to rapid-fire sneeze. The building is HUGE- it takes Renathan a moment to take it all in, standing there in the doorway looking like an idiot. It was interesting, seeing something like this. Was the Zoological Imports this large? He tried not to think about it much when he went there, and he didn't want to think about it too much in association with this place, either. This place was here in a humanitarian function, anyway. He takes a breath after realizing that he feels like something was sitting on his chest, and then gathers himself before stepping out of the doorway, closing the door quickly behind himself. He could hear the creatures here, now- and it tugged at his heartstrings.

Renathan sometimes wondered how he could be like this. Every time he thought about his own critters, his heart ached for Shy Guy. Whenever he saw other critters, he thought of his critters, and his heart went right back to that giant equillion. Whenever Renathan thought of Shy Guy, his mind inevitably showed him those unwanted mental images of his beloved beast slammed into the dust and STILL fighting for HIM. It was horrible. It had made him sick to his stomach and sick to his heart- panic attacks, apparently. He could barely even stand to be around him for any longer than the hour or so he typically spent by his side- grooming him and feeding him treats while he lived at the kid's farm.
Renathan sighs, and sadly considers turning around. Something however makes him push himself forward. There was paperwork on the desk, and some chairs to sit in. He wasn't entirely certain what he was expecting whenever he got here.
Perhaps Renathan had associated the idea of this place much more with the Zoological Imports than it had actually deserved. His facial expression most likely would have been a sight to see had it not been hidden under his mask. Something about the entire situation felt wrong. Had he done something wrong in coming here? Of course, he really didn't need to get another animal- he already had so many. At one point, the biggest and most exciting thing about Pethia was this- the animals. He'd wanted so desperately to own as many possible and be the 'best beastmaster ever'. This had lost its allure over time. He still loved his animals so much, but he had to admit that he was never going to be able to take care of as many as he wanted.
Still, something urges him on- he moves to go look at the beasts. It is obvious where they are kept from the noises beyond the larger door. The smaller one evaded his notice entirely.
There are two sections, Renathan notices straight away. He looks from one to the other, standing anxiously and bouncing a bit on his toes. He wasn't entirely sure what he should be feeling at the moment. He wasn't sure if this emotion was excitement or if it was something else- because it was tinged with guilt so heavily that he couldn't process it. He swallows thickly, and walks in the middle of the two sections as he made his observations. One side had the smaller critters- A young slynk (had he ever seen them this young?), a yumenokei that looked somewhat silvery-blue in color, and a- what were those called? Pteropty? That one was also grey. He'd heard that those had some kind of poison.
There were several others on that side as well, and whenever he gets to the back of the room he makes to go back to the front. He thinks that perhaps he has seen enough for today. He kind of felt like being sick.
As he is on his way out, Renathan's eyes catch on something that he's not entirely sure what is at first. He'd seen plenty of larger animals on this side, some of them kind of dangerous. This one was at the far back of the enclosure that it was in, and all he could see was a bright yellow tail. He blinks, and stops. He steps over to it to get a better look. It was feathered, the tail was definitely feathered? Or perhaps it was a more downy fur. He sneezes again, the smell of a nearby relatively stinky critter catching his attention (perhaps he would offer to bathe some of the beasties in the future? not that he was a groomer professionally!) and apparently that of his nasal cavity as well, and that seems to catch the attention of the critter.
When it turns around and moves gingerly to the front of the enclosure- Renathan catches sight of the beak on the creature's face.
Renathan immediately seems to realize what it was, but it still feels like the realization tumbles out of some hole in his mind instead of being logically reached- what was wrong with him? Still, it was a Chiryma. He has had a Chiryma before- Lisle was a Chiryma before he was potioned, in fact. That reminded him of another painful memory, the time that Lisle's leg was harmed. He sighs, and tries to force himself to walk away. He needed to go home and recharge, to escape the low panic he felt blooming in his chest.
Instead, he quietly stepped forward, raising a leathery palm slowly. He doesn't quite get close to the cage- Chiryma were predatory after all. However, this one seemed... Sweet, if not a little sad. It pushes it's head as close as it could get to him- as if it was asking for pets. Renathan is caught like a deer in lamplight, completely unsure as to what his body was going to do unbidden next. Pet the creature? Run away?
The russet mammalian does not wind up running away. Renathan is rooted in the spot for a long lingering moment that was really only a breath, and then he takes a step forward. It is a tentative step full of hesitation. He was more scared than probably any critter here, and he wasn't entirely cerebrally sure why. It was a deep rooted primal feeling, and not one he is sure that he has caused to himself though it feels like he has. He isn't sure what draws him to the creature, but it seemed like it really just needed a friend. Despite the danger in coming near due to the possibility of getting a finger snapped in that great beak, Renathan silently raises his palm higher and higher as he slowly treks forward. His pink eyes are on the cute but somehow sad pools of blue before him- and finally, Finally he touches the creature's beak.
The touch is not a lingering one. All at once Renathan's mind and good sense seems to snap back to him, and Renathan moves his hand away so quickly that it nearly gives both of them backlash. Renathan takes two quick steps back while the chiryma jerks back and whips around, watching him from a safer distance. She quickly seems to realize that she wasn't harmed whenever Renathan moved quickly- and she forgives him for the slight so quickly... Someone she had just met, that THAT gives Renathan more backlash than any other reaction would have had. Perhaps out there in some other universe Renathan would have frightened the chiryma off and that would have been that. He would have went home and never stepped back in that building ever again. He would have pushed the memory out of his mind and then tried not to be guilty.
However, Renathan realizes that the chiryma is so sweet.
That breaks Renathan's heart. He knows nothing about this creature at all. Where did it come from? Who owned it before? How long had it been here? He had no real clues to this either. He knew that it wasn't a standard breed of the version of chiryma that it was. It didn't look like the original chiryma at all, so it had to be a so-called 'version two'. However, it did have the colors of one of the pictures of chiryma he'd seen before- of the original ones. He hasn't forced himself to move from the spot yet. His mind is racing, and his chest hurts. However, he finally swallows his strange emotional state and pushes it as far down as he could. He smiles. It is a forced smile, but it did a little to calm his nerves. At this, he steps forward again, slowly, but this time much more surely than he had before.
The chiryma seems completely unperturbed by Renathan's strange antics. If he offput her in any way, she did not show it. Even more worryingly to Renathan, she didn't seem interested in any kind of aggressive actions in response to him. That could mean that she was vey well adapted, or it could mean something more sinister. So far, he had no indication that the possibility of some sinister backstory (of which he had seen often before)- but he wanted to get to know the creature anyway.
The russet mammalian pats the chiryma. First it is a few very slight anxious feathery touches, trying to make sure that the creature wasn't going to suddenly go unhinged and snap his fingers off. However, he soon became somewhat comfortable with her. She looked at him with excited bright blue eyes, and he wasn't sure what to think. She was just so cute, and sweet! Surely she hadn't been here very long at all? How could anyone resist her?
Renathan eventually does back away, but it is only when the creature begins rooting her beak against his hand a little forcefully. It takes him a moment to realize that she was looking for something. Treats? He whispers beneath his breath- "You want treats." It was more of a question than a statement. The chiryma looks at him expectantly, but watches him sadly when he goes to leave. He wasn't planning on staying away long- he was planning to go buy treats and then return to her. He seemed to remember a place just down the street that sold treats? Renathan catches sight of some donated treats on the way out though, and he finds himself quickly going right back to her with treats this time.
The other creatures were either only somewhat interested in the treats as he walked past, or completely uninterested. However, the chiryma seemed very excited that he had returned.
The chiryma was a pretty color. The sandy color was quite standard for the original chiryma, and the sunny-dipped points told him that she was one of those 'Autumn' chiryma. Certainly one of the prettier colors, if he did say so himself. She had traditionally blue eyes, and a soft expression (if one could call it that on a bird-like beast). She was certainly large enough to be a mount, and though Renathan was not hurting for a mount (Lisle was going to be a great one, since he didn't have any qualms with it) he still found himself considering adopting her anyway. He had been struggling to downsize his group of critters, and obtaining yet another was really not something he should do- but...
He steps up without finishing the thought, a treat in hand, and carefully held it out. He knew that he was taking a chance to get his fingers snapped.
The chiryma was certainly sweet. He sincerely doubted that she had been trained before- she just didn't seem to be to him. A good beast tamer could have an educated guess on such things- but she did seem to know not to bite the hand that feeds. The treat is held aloft for her, and she stretches just barely enough out to obtain it and then practically scoops it out of his hand with her beak to keep from biting him. That just about melted Renathan's heart- she was such a sweetie! He couldn't imagine why she was here? For one, she was obviously someone's offspring chiryma- quite possibly a pure-breeding. Someone had planned for her to exist, and here she was. He frowned beneath the mask to himself, and held out another treat for her.
What was the process for adopting here? He still was on the fence about it, but he was rapidly leaning towards adopting her if possible.
Renathan had been so focused on the creature that he had failed to notice that the floor was wet. He looked down at the water, and then followed with his gaze up to the hose. Ah, so that was how they cleaned here? It still smelled like animals, and that made Renathan frown. Sure, his barns stank before he cleaned them- but he had them professionally cleaned all the time! There must not be a lot of volunteers here, perhaps? Or maybe it was just the fact that it was in a building. Buildings were really hard to keep smelling nice because they were enclosed spaces.
The chiryma ate the treats as Renathan offered them, and then tilted her head up in an awkward way. Renathan had no idea what she wanted, until he followed with his gaze what she was looking so pointedly at- toys. There was a shelf full of them, and it was obvious she wanted to play.
