A year and a half ago, if you'd asked Seveth whether he would ever make a node again, he probably would have said no. He was an elemental now, with all the baggage involved with it, and while the glowing eyes and the green, seam-like transformation of San's scars were cool, he did miss the idea of being able to wield whatever magic he wanted. Not that he had ever managed to gain much power before he became like this, but still. A guy could dream, right? But even after everything he had gone through, money problems still dogged them. And not too long ago, he had gotten a letter in the mail from the person he'd sold a node to last year. 'You should be good to go again by now, right? Fancy making another deal?'Curt, to the point, and utterly devoid of any niceties... But hey, this guy had the money.

And apparently he had the crystals too, though when Seveth got his hands on them, he was a little surprised at what he saw. Chaos crystals. And a Chaos elemental to seal the deal on them. The irony wasn't lost on him, no more than was the wealth represented by such a collection. Eight divine crystals and a prismatic on top of it... Oh, what a younger Seveth wouldn't have done for that kind of good fortune.
Standing at the foot of the altar, he considered just making off with them. But no, it was no more than a flight of fancy; someone with the means to send him all this probably also had the means to really make him regret stealing from them. And the money really was so good.
At least the steps were easier on him this year. Apparently San's exercise regimen was finally starting to pay off.

The spooky figures weren't any less startling even knowing that they were waiting for him. Okay, well, maybe a little. Slightly. They were still incredibly eerie. Seveth smiled. "Hey! Long time no see. How's it been? How's the family? Congrats on the baby by the way Tim, I hear she's a real cutie." If he bantered his way through this, maybe that would make it easier.
Picking up the knife was just another note of unpleasantness, but this time he was spared the worst of his doubts about the condition of his soul. Their soul. Souls? Whatever it was, they hadn't been adversely affected, so while no one in their household would necessarily approve of what he was about to do, at least he could make the argument that they weren't really losing anything. It was like donating hair. If it grew back, what was the harm, in the end?

He put his things down on the altar, then ate the berry. It was a little fresher this year. He wondered how this person was storing it, to keep the taste so relatively nice. If he closed his eyes and concentrated, he could almost imagine that it was still fresh and juicy, though he would have to work at it a little.
And then he cut himself, quickly and precisely, before he could overthink it. The weight of the knife in his hand felt different than San's weapons, lighter and... there was something else about it that he couldn't put a name to. But then, he supposed there would be, since the knife cut souls. And trying to do a knife trick was a different experience than knowing that you were going to cut yourself with real intent. The pain wasn't a surprise, but that made him all the more aware of it.

For a moment he stared at the crystals. With nine of them, plus the pink mind crystal, they crowded all the available space on the altar. It really was an embarrassment of riches... And now he was going to drip his own blood over each one of them. Raising his arm, he let the liquid fall, observing it meticulously until the deed was done. No one gave him the credit for it, but there were things Seveth took seriously, and making a node was one of them.
There was a price to pay if things didn't go right, after all.
He knelt and prayed, and this time he knew the prayer as the coursing of the magic through his own veins, the feel of electricity coursing along his skin as he cast a spell. Chaos was his element now, inextricably so, and the hum of the crystals felt like the touch of a friend.
