Alma scribbled the golden izer’s information onto the form alongside her own, pausing once as she noticed the similarities between the metal loops that held the izer’s information square and the little plastic rings it had been ripping free. With a giggle, she finished the last of the form, and moved on down the line of cages. Up until that point, she had seen only smaller, ‘common’ creatures, things that were of no use when compared to the special beasts one could buy. She was rather happy about that, picking her way through them and trying to decide which ones to take home.
Then she came across the salaves, a bloated looking snake that lay half in and half out of a small pool of water, it’s insect-like legs tucked in closely to its sides. “Bleedin’ hells, did some collector of extinct die or something?” The salaves did not respond, eyes closed as it slept or whatever it was that salaves did.
She had a passing interest in salaves once, the reptiles seemingly so elegant and unique to her at the time, and she did not need to look at the information plate to know it was a hydro salaves of the original kind. Then they had died out, their uses too few for her to bother purchasing a corpse and a revival, and it had been quite some time before she thought of them again.
Still, as she picked through the donated toys and treats, she knew enough that the big red rubber ball was not something they would likely enjoy. When she found nothing like a freeze dried grubble, Alma gave up and rose from the pile of toys. Annoying the salaves was not something she wanted to do, not if she intended to train it later. She walked back to the salaves, the beast not having moved, and noticed the special lamp that hung above the cage. The spot felt warmer than the rest of the hallway, and Alma resolved to set up a bigger one in her own kennel if she took the salaves home.
“Oi. Hey. Fatty, you alright?” Alma sunk down next to the cage, watching the salaves carefully. It was breathing, it’s body slowing rising and then deflating as she watched. The cage itself was clean, the small tub of water looking more like a water bowl for some giant beast than a full on pool, and the salaves body formed a small arch over the lip so that its head rested on the floor while its tail remained in the pool. “Not sure how much of ya is tail though,” Alma admitted with a laugh, resting the clipboard of forms on her knees. “If yer weaver legs are any indication, guess most of ya is tail. Ya’know, like how most normal things got a couple of legs and then a long tail? Then again, ‘ard to say normal things when y’all are lab made. Dunno if they just glue the legs on a snake or what.”
The salaves tried to ignore the talking. It was warm, the majority of it comfortably resting in water that was just high enough to submerge in, and it had been fed a large amount of unmoving food that had not struggled when it looped its coils around it. That had slightly disappointed it, and the feeling of fullness after it had gulped the corpse down had not done much to lessen its boredom. Now that it wanted to sleep, to just digest its meal in peace, something had plopped itself down near it and was making all the noise in the world.
Alma laughed as she saw the hydro salaves eyes begin to open, its spiked eyebrows moving upwards with impossible slowness. “Now you wanna chat too? Ain’t got any bits of meat for ya, not that you need it.” The salaves curved its head towards her, meeting her eyes with bright blue ones. “But If ya come on home with me, got some fish. Ya like fish?”
The salaves slid into the water, submerging it’s head entirely as it coiled itself in the small space. “Not sure if yer gonna fit in there, but my cages got big pools, with a lotta sand on the side. Good spot for a salaves like yerself.” Alma stood up as she talked, filling in the form with the information on the little plate. The salaves appeared to press itself down gainst the floor of the bowl as she spoke, and Alma nodded to herself. “Yeah, a big pool with lotta space. Maybe could train ya to hunt the feral slynk and other beasties that swim onto mah property. That’d be good.”
Alma filled in the last of the form. “Not that one over there though,” she said, jerking a thumb back down the hallway. “That little bugger is gonna have their own job to do. Gotta make sure you know not tah attack any of the good ones.”
Alma flipped through the forms as she walked away from the hydro salaves, the snake slowly raising its head above the water after the sound of her chatter ceased to reach it. With the return of relative silence, it poked its head over the side of the tub and closed its eyes.
Alma was too busy checking the forms for any errors to notice the salaves’ actions behind her. Her kennel address was correct on each of the forms, as well as her name and the species names of the creatures she hoped to take home with her. She squeezed another ‘a’ into the word ‘hydro salaves’, fairly certain she did not want to adopt any amount of salve from the agency, then looked at the final form. A quick lift of its edge showed her that it was indeed the final form, and she looked down the line of cages. There had been one more she had been considering taking, not the mighty wiurn or the flashy vsc that lay sprawled about in their cages, and upon reaching the cage, the little beast let out a horrific squaaaabing sound as she met its eyes.
There had been three izer in the hallway. The first two, fine examples of the now extinct originals, had differed only in color and slightly in size. The thing next to her, with a gaping beak that a near endless supply of that horrific sound was erupting from, was only similar in name. It’s breast was bare of any feathers, pallid flesh ballooning out as it drew in air to keep its horrible sound going. It’s red eyes were darker than any color the other izer had on their whole bodies, and it’s own feathers were darker still, those making up the majority of it being a pure black.
An izer v2. The last time she had dealt with one of it’s kind, she had been picking up the small corpses that have come from her desire to not hear the constant squaaabing and not spend enough time with them. And now someone had antigrown one to the single most annoying stage of their life. And the only stage that could guarantee later loyalty.
With a sigh, she went back to the provided toys and treats, selecting a handful of droppers that had been provided. She doubted it was for any of the other beasts in the hallway, though she would have paid money to watch someone attempt to feed the cramped-looking royal wiurn with them, and she filled up each one with a blended serving of meat powder and water. The stuff looked foul, but the mix had it written that it was specifically for young predatory birds, and she could still hear the izer demanding food.
Alma went back with enough droppers to stuff the little izer like a balloon, and found the izer with its beak pressed against the cage. “Yeah yeah, I know. Absolutely starving, ain’t you?” She pressed the nozzle to its open mouth, slowly crushing the rubber bulb. She did not want to accidentally drown the little thing, even if it would be the only way to stop its demand for food permanently.
“That’s the problem,” she told the izer as the dropper slowly emptied, “You’re always gonna be hungry. Some ijit probably mixed up their potions, or thought they’d use the cheaper one. And now yer stuck as a tiny, starving baby forever.” The dropper ran out, and the izer snapped its beach shut on the pastic end as she tried to pull it away. “Oh, c’mon you little- I’ve got another one.”
She dropped the clipboard on top of it’s cage, freeing up her other hand to grab another dropper. This one she angled to the side of the izer’s mouth, slowly extruding the meat-paste into the open corner. That led the izer to throw open its mouth once more, greedily gulping down the contents of that dropper as well. “Course, it’s only like half my paycheck to get you a potion to fix that. Would hopefully make you a bit less, well this. You know,” she said, gesturing with another dropper as the izer continued to eat, “less you.”
She pushed out the last a little quicker than the rest, yanking the empty dripper away before the beak could close on it. She did not want to damage its beak, and the risk when it was so young and weak was high enough to avoid it. What would be the point of growing it to a more stable stage if it was going to be deformed?
The squabing started again, and she shoved the last dropper into its mouth to put an end to it. “Yeah. I think I’ll take care of yah, make sure yer not gonna up an’ die on me, then I’ll get yah that potion. If you prove to me yer worth it, alright?” The empty dropper was pulled free, and this time the izer made no move to grab it, blinking sleepily at Alma instead. She rinsed out the droppers and returned them to their rack, then grabbed the clipboard once more. She entered the information quickly, then walked to the front desk to submit her applications.
