With age came grace for some creatures. Not so for this Houluh. Noa could no longer call her a pup now that she was full grown, and so she had been dubbed Walnut, after the wood of a piece of furniture that she had ruined. Rhys had sighed over Noa's naming sense, but it wasn't as if Walnut herself noticed any difference. She didn't yet answer to the name, and was daily giving Rabbit and Rhys more work in cleaning and repairs. "Maybe pups would settle her," said Noa. Her looks were splashy enough that it was easy to find a partner. Or maybe they wouldn't, but the appointment had already been made, and Noa was curious to see what the union would produce, at the very least. None of Walnut's siblings looked the least bit alike, though Walnut herself was by far the most differentiated of the lot, with the caramel colored stripes. The walk to the breeding center was not as miserable as it could have been. Walnut still liked walks, and by some miracle mostly managed to remember not to act up on them, which was more than could be said about her behavior when she was at home. 1

Noa, huh? Fiera hadn't been too surprised when someone chased her up about a houluh breeding. Breezy Daze was a very well-known kennel, after all. (Or at least, it was in Fiera's eyes.) So when she had been called up about getting a breeding in with Dayo pretty much the moment after his debutante, it hardly surprised her. Who WOULDN'T want a piece of him? He sat next to her obediently, scanning the lot in front of the breeding center. The houluh he was supposed to be bred with sounded gorgeous too, at least from the description that Fiera had been given. A dark brown, nearly black body with lighter stripes and pale speckles. Fiera was incredibly excited to see what would come from the union between them, and would happily snap up any striped puppies they might produce. So when a new houluh turned the corner, Fiera immediately perked up to see if they were the one that she was supposed to be meeting today. 2

Noa was a little peeved to see that they had arrived first. He hated arriving first for anything, including Pit fights - not that he could always avoid it. But he had counted on Walnut misbehaving on the walk there, and she hadn't. He never thought he would regret the fact that she hadn't caused any mischief, but here they were.
Fortunately they didn't have to wait long, though Rhys was the one who spotted the other party first, as usual. {Over there,} Rhys said, and Noa looked up, stifling a yawn as he did. Or at least he started to, but Walnut made a lunge just as he began, and he was dragged stumbling forward a few steps before he brought her up short. "Behave," he barked. At the sharpness of his tone, Walnut faltered, then subsided with a slight whine. Noa sighed, and wound the leash tighter around his hand.
"You must be Fiera," he said, sounding about as tired as he felt. He hadn't slept well the night before - or the night before that, or the night before that either.
{Nice to meet you,} said Rhys, better rested and in better spirits. Rhys was always happy to meet someone new.

The second Noa came into a distance where she could see the whites of Noa's eye, her judgmental gaze activated. A young man, dressed casually, but... she couldn't help but note the materials, being a fan of fashion herself. It was all floppy and seemingly formless, but the tailoring was perfect and the materials high quality. Not to mention there wasn't a single hint of wear and tear on it, which meant it was either new or perfectly maintained. And that beautiful faeron- it must have cost someone a pretty penny. Clearly, this was a man of fine taste. Fiera could respect that. "I sure am. That would make you Noa, right?" She said, cracking a small smile. "Yeesh, you look terrible. I hope you didn't lose too much sleep over this. Houluh breeding isn't THAT hard." She said with a laugh, flipping her hair. "There's just a lot of paperwork." She blinked at the faeron though. "Oh- you speak!" That... wasn't expected.

Noa didn't miss the fact that the woman gave him a once over, and now that Walnut was no longer trying to yank him off his feet, he took the opportunity to do the same. Loud clothes, loud make-up. He wondered what she was trying to disguise, but only in an offhand sort of way. The secrets and private insecurities of strangers didn't hold much use for him, and if he hadn't heard of her before now, she must not have been terribly influential in magical circles, which was just about all he cared for.
When she spoke, he smiled, and the sleepy veneer gave way to something a little sharper. "Not over this, no." He let the insult to his appearance pass. She was right; breeding Houluh wasn't hard, just time consuming, and he didn't want to consume even more of his time by trying to dress for the occasion.
But Rhys caught her attention soon enough, which was probably just as well, since the Faeron made for happier company. {Well, it's only sort of speaking,} Rhys explained, {but you can talk to me if you like! Ah, is this your Houluh? What kinds of tricks does he know?}

Oh good, he caught the barbed "small talk". Fiera supposed that meant he really WAS tired, and not just stupid. She met a lot of stupid people, and it was worth knowing the difference. "Well good- hopefully we can get these puppies sooner rather than later, then. And yes!" Fiera said, thrilled to be able to talk about herself- or in this case, something she owned. "This is Dayo!" She said as she crouched down, giving him a pat on the head. He whuffed softly, as if in greeting to the new "guests". He wasn't smart enough to know WHAT was happening exactly, but he did take note of the fact that this was a new place with new people- and a pretty matronne. "He's a working houluh- he can hunt for himself and for me all on his own! He's an awfully smart boy- I'm sure we'll get some clever pups from him. How about yours?" Fiera said, trying to figure out who to address exactly.

Noa glanced down at the Houluh, trying to discern any remarkable quality about the dog. Fiera seemed enthusiastic about him, but as far as Noa could tell, this Houluh was not terribly different from any of the others he had seen. Not that he thought Walnut any better, though she had turned out shaggier, which was remarkable mostly for the added inconvenience of trying to keep her from looking like a matted mess.
"Hunting, hmm?" Noa said. "Small game?" He couldn't imagine something the size of a Houluh taking down a grown Murp or anything like, but he was hardly an expert on the species. Maybe they had some surprises in them yet.
{Oh, a hunting hound! Like in the books! Maybe we can train one to do that too, next time,} said Rhys, eyes shining.
But as for Walnut's capabilities... Noa thought on the matter a moment, then said, "You're looking at a mushroom-hunting Houluh." It sounded pretty absurd when spoken aloud, but he had been more taken with the novelty of the idea than the practicality of it. "Not really something I can demonstrate for you here, but..."
As if she could sense that she was being talked about, Walnut turned to look at them all, scratching an ear with her hind foot before opening her mouth in a toothy grin, tongue lolling.

Dayo was VERY special to Fiera... but of course, all of her pets were precious angels in her eyes. Even if they were thirty feet long and had a tendency to try and bite arms up. Sweet little babies, all of them. "Sounds like between the two of them, we could get a five star meal out of these guys!" Fiera said with a laugh before walking toward the door of the breeding center. She pushed it open for the other two. "Of course, he's all up to date on his obedience tricks as well. Dayo, come here!" She said, and the houluh got up with little hesitation, trotting into the building. A truffle hunting houluh DID sound interesting... perhaps she'd breed up their offspring to be forest foragers as well. Still, she would have to wait and see what their personalities were before making any final decisions on the matter.

Noa's smile softened to something that had some semblance of genuine feeling to it. "That does sound like an interesting idea," he said. "It's been a while since I've eaten anything that wasn't magically prepared, but I've heard good things about game meat." Of course, that was only if someone else was doing the preparation. Noa didn't cook, didn't know how to cook, and didn't really care to take the pains to learn when he could conjure food out of thin air for his own sustenance. The mushrooms that Walnut had found for him thus far were mostly used for potions or sold off to shops in town, rather than finding their way to his dinner plate.
He followed Fiera and her Houluh into the building, and Walnut followed him. Walnut had no formal obedience training to speak of, but between her relatively small size and the fact that she had grown up around him, Noa managed her well enough to avoid causing a public disturbance, which was good enough for him. He still had to keep a tight grip on the leash, but so far Walnut was just taking in the sights and scents of the building, since she had never been here before.

Fiera laughed. “Magically prepared? Is that a thing around these parts, then? Game meat is... good, if prepared well.” She said, thinking back on her own experiences. She used to love venison, but hiding out in the woods with a ragtag team of soldiers that were slowly starving to death on thin winter rabbits while your oppressors were trying to wait you out had left Fiera... a little bit bitter on the taste. Game was, as far as she knew it, for eating only when you didn’t have access to anything better. Still, she could choke it down for the sake of politeness. The humanish sidled up to the front desk and talked to the receptionist briefly, obtaining the check in paperwork for herself and Noa. She offered a clipboard nonchalantly to the man while twiddling with her own pen, scanning the form to make sure nothing had changed. It was usually fine, but it didn’t hurt to check.

"I don't know about 'these parts', but..." Noa held out a hand, a bored expression on his face. He had cast this spell so many times now that there was nothing remotely interesting about it anymore for him - or difficult, for that matter. A stack of sandwiches appeared, wrapped in edible paper, since he didn't have a plate at hand to place them on. "Rhys?"
The Faeron levitated the food into the air, and Noa dusted his hands free of any lingering breadcrumbs. "Would you like one? They're perfectly edible," he said. He wasn't feeling particularly hungry himself, but he didn't often feel hunger, and since he had gone to the trouble of conjuring the food, he supposed he may as well eat.
The process might not have been novel for him or for Rhys, but it was the first time Walnut had seen it. Her attention was on the food at once, and even though they weren't within easy reach of her, she made a jump for one that Rhys only narrowly avoided by lifting the sandwiches even higher. {Whoa!} said Rhys. {Hey hey, these aren't for you...}
Perhaps it hadn't been such a good idea to include meat in some of the sandwiches, now that Noa thought about it.

Fiera had finished her paperwork just in time to see Noa’s magic trick, and she nearly slammed the clipboard back on the counter in surprise. Instead, she just managed to sort of fumble it. “What.” She said, a little bit too loudly. “That’s not... I get like, glittery magic shields and moving things with your mind, but there is no way that works.” She said, despite having just watched it. “I mean, I just- where did it come from? What kind of meat is that even? Did it just steal it out of an animal? Do you have to pick the ingredients out yourself, or does the universe get to decide? How do you know it didn’t slip in, like, poison ivy instead of lettuce when you weren’t paying attention?” She babbled, completely confused. On some level she was sort of hoping Walnut would manage to nab one- she did NOT want to put that in her mouth.

Noa had grown up around a great deal of magic, so it didn't even really occur to him anymore that someone might be uneasy about the prospect of eating magically conjured food. He glanced at the sandwich in his hand, then at Fiera, and the expression on his face could almost have been called pitying. Then, looking Fiera dead in the eyes with utter nonchalance, he took a bite of the sandwich.
Honestly, he didn't usually bother dressing it up this much. He had discovered pretty quickly that it was both feasible and most efficient to simply summon bars of nourishment that didn't look like anything in particular. Sandwiches were one of the few foods he remembered clearly, so that was what he had chosen this time around. They tasted exactly as he imagined - but then, they would, since he was the one that summoned them.
After the sandwich was gone, he licked the remnants of something - mayonnaise? - from his thumb. "I don't know. Does it matter? I haven't died yet." He inclined his head, then added, "You can make whatever you want, I guess, as long as it weighs about half a pound. I'm not very interested in food though, so I don't play around with it much."

“I mean.” Fiera said, trying not to cringe at Noa eating a piece of the universe. “Even if it’s not poisonous, how do you know it’s not like... like if you don’t know where the meat came from, how do you know it’s not people? People tastes like pork, that might not be ham.” She noted, narrowing her eyes suspiciously. “And you don’t think about like... where that half a pound from? Did a rock just vanish somewhere to get turned into a sandwich? Maybe you’ve just been like... slowly eating someone’s house.” She paused. “Don’t eat peoples’ houses Noa, that’s weird.” Meanwhile, Dayo looked between Fiera and the sandwiches. He knew he probably wasn’t allowed to have one because that other houluh wasn’t... but maybe... if he went and stared at her REALLY hard, she’d change her mind.
