It felt... strange, coming back here to the place where she had grown up. It didn't feel like a homecoming at all. When she had been younger, the expanse of one single house had been her whole world, and she couldn't remember having been outside more than a handful of times.
Now that she had come back, San brought her to all sorts of places. At first she was the one to suggest it, to keep him company -- and to keep an eye on him, though she wouldn't have said as much to him. But then he began asking her to come with him, taking her someplace new each time, as if hoping the change of scenery might stir some recollection in her.
She didn't have the heart to tell him that there was nothing to remember. He felt bad enough for her as it was, and she didn't want to give him a reason to feel any worse.
At least all the excursions gave her a chance to commit the layout of the city to memory. She wanted to test that memory now, which was why she had come out on her own. It was one of Seveth's days anyway, and Rei preferred to stay away on those days if she could. The fact that Seveth often did things San disapproved of weighed on her mind, but in truth the reason she avoided him had more to do with how strange it was to watch the moods and mannerisms of a stranger on the features of a man she otherwise knew so well. It unsettled her in a way she had no desire to think about, and wandering around the city would keep her mind occupied on other things.
Without really meaning to, she found herself at the park. It wasn't a place she would have chosen, but there was nothing wrong with it either. She kept out of sight; just because she was more capable now than when she had left didn't mean she had forgotten the dangers of being an unaccompanied 'pet' in this city. But as she sat perched in a tree and watched the people below, she thought maybe if she sat here long enough she could start to work out some of the restless feelings muttering at the edge of her mind.
