Night probably wasn't the best time to go hunting for something, especially for the first time, but... this was going to be fine she figured as she put a hand on Merle's head, holding a flashlight with the other hand and stifling a yawn. "Go find something, Merle," she told him, patting him on the side them and Ohou stretched out before sniffing around a little around them. He would find something to bring to her eventually, she knew, but this was going to take a little time. They only had a few hours before daybreak when the bird would be impossible to find, so she knew they had to get this done pretty quickly. Limited time meant limited searching, but at least they could come back tomorrow night if he didn't find the bird. This was going to be great though, and she wished she knew what the bird looked like as Merle sniffed around, trying to catch a scent.

Merle's eyes narrowed as he finally found some pawprints, but he knew that wasn't what they were looking for. She had somehow managed to convey that they were looking for a bird, she had shown him some feathers and while they probably weren't the kind he was looking for, he at least knew that an animal that made these prints wasn't a bird. He glanced over at the woman, who smiled at him and egged him on a little as he trotted a little further, nose and eyes on the ground as he tried to sniff out a scent of a bird. The feathers had helped, he knew the underlying scent he was looking for at least, which was a good thing no matter what happened. Jack kept the flashlight down so she could see well enough, and hopefully Merle could too, but she wasn't sure what to do just yet to help him out.

Somehow he was stuck on this rodent though, and his lip pulled back a little when he realized he was following the tracks instead of finding the bird's scent. This was irritating, and he shook his head with a whine at the woman who followed him. Turning around, he nuzzled up to her hand and she showed him some feathers again for him to sniff at. If he didn't even catch the scent tonight, they would try to get it in another area of the Everfields tomorrow night, which would probably be for the best she thought with a small nod. As she patted his head, he finally turned around and headed off again, wondering what he would manage to find, hopefully the scent of a bird so he could start tracking it. For now though, he had to search, since they didn't have the feathers of the animal they needed just yet.

The Ohou lifted his head when a breeze hit, hoping he could catch the scent, or even the sound, of the bird they were looking for, but nothing was strong enough to follow. He gave a sigh and woofed low, almost under his breath, so he wouldn't chase away the bird, if it was around. Starting to doubt it, the Ohou wasn't sure what to do at the moment and he looked at the woman again who smiled and urged him on, "Keeping trying to find something, I know you can do it." Merle bobbed his head a little, a gesture he had learned from her over the time they had spent together, and he turned to keep on the trail he was trying to find at the moment. All he knew was that things needed to happen, he really needed to find this bird, he didn't know why, but the woman wanted him to.

Jack watched as she noticed the pawprints of a rodent again that he seemed to be following. Maybe they should just find it and get this trip done with, they probably wouldn't find the bird tonight anyway at this point. Frowning, she kept forward and kept Merle forward too, who was feeling a little disheartened at this point, but he wouldn't give up. As long as the sun was down, then they would be good she knew, they could always come tomorrow and all that. Tilting her head, the woman watched him as he finally stopped moving and stayed in one place, sniffing at the air and putting his paws on a tree trunk to see if he could find some markings in the area as well. That would at least be something she knew with a raised eyebrow, and she hoped that this training would actually come to fruition this trip.

This was starting to get frustrating, just pawprints and some breeze. No signs of the bird yet, and Merle was a little frustrated. Why was he so stuck on this rodent anyway? He snarled a little and kept his nose on the ground while he searched, hoping he was going to find this bird he was looking for. This was what was irritating, it took time, and he didn't know what he wanted to find after all of this. Hopefully he would keep the scent of the bird once he got it, but he wasn't sure he was going to get it tonight. Still, however, it was good experience either way, and he plunged ahead into the dark with the woman trotting after him with her light to help see the way. She was an excellent tracker as well, but she wasn't the one being tested here, it was all Merle.

As he sniffed around, he wasn't all that sold that he would actually find this thing tonight. However, when he glanced up, and the woman swept her beam a little higher, he felt his ears perk up as he saw some scratches and marks on some of the lower limbs of a tree. Pausing next to it, he sniffed at the marks and hoped that was the scent he was going for. This was interesting, and he wondered what was going to happen if it was the scent he was looking for. Opening his mouth in a grin, he sniffed the air and hoped that he was going to find what he needed now. Jack grinned when she noticed what he saw and she kept him going, telling him to keep searching for now, they would find it sooner or later, maybe not tonight, but definitely at some point in the future.

Merle was still young, all things aside, and he turned his head swiftly when the breeze picked up again. Instead of focusing on the marks on the branch and then scent along with it, like he should have done, he caught the scent of something sweet and buried his face into a flower nearby. Jack sighed a little and then chuckled, he was still pretty young, she had to remember that, and she patted him on the head to try and get him to focus. "Find something, Merle," she told him again with a smile and nudged him along the way. Merle woofed low and put his nose to the ground again, remembering his training and hoping to find this bird she had showed him feathers for before this hunt for it. All he knew was, the woman really wanted this bird and he would find it for her one of these days.

Jack nudged him aside again when he started to get a little distracted and she smiled as she did so. He was going to be fine, but she wished there was something more she could do for him. Merle put his nose back into the air and sniffed again before he spotted something in the light of the flashlight she was carrying. The woman watched as he sniffed at a few scratches on a branch again and hoped they were made by the bird. This was going to be fine, he would get it eventually and he would get his certificate. Smiling, she hoped that he had found the trail of the bird, but that was something they needed to hope for while he searched. Maybe things would go better for them if they had two of them here, that would certainly be something, she figured with a small sigh as she thought.

Nope, he had lost it, and he growled, upset at himself for being so flighty. This was bad, he didn't know what to do about it, but the bird was far more elusive than he had ever thought it would be. Jack simply patted him on the head with a smile and told him they would come back every night until he found it. She really wanted those certificates for him, and she knew that things would be better during his breedings if they had them for whatever reason. It was like Maestre Houluh and all that, they gave off better offspring as well. Sighing a little, she stretched out and then gave him some jerky for doing well so far, even though it was taking a little longer than she thought in order to get to this bird. Of course... there wasn't much she could do about it yet, right?

Another marking on a low branch, and Merle gave a low woof. Maybe he wasn't as flighty as he thought he was, though he would probably lose the markings soon enough, which bothered him to no end. Keeping an eye on the branch, he looked around a little while to see if there were more markings or something nearby, even the scent of refuse would help out, he knew, considering how often she'd had him search and track while they were training. Jack smiled, she thought the bird was near, but she couldn't help him out, which was frustrating. This was something that he needed to do himself if he was going to be certified, there wasn't much she could do for him except to help out with the flashlight. Jack pushed her hair back and stifled a yawn. Staying out so long was going to be rough, but she knew it was going to be alright in the end.

Yes, another marking. Maybe he was getting closer than he thought! Sniffing at the marking, he hoped that this was going to lead him to what he needed for now, though it would be hard to know for certain until he actually found the bird. He tried the best he could though, it was hard, but he would manage it eventually. If he never even found anything to officially track with... then things would be harder than possible. Sighing, Jack stretched out again and flashed the light around as she looked as well, hoping to guide him in the right direction after all this time. There were a couple hours until first light, which meant they would have to end their hunt then. About an hour had passed so far with not much to do with things, but that was alright at the same time. These things took time after all, didn't they?

Jack saw a few things up above, but Merle got distracted again and started to follow a few paw prints once more. She sighed and looked at him, "Merle, go find something!" He jerked his head back from the ground and realized what he had done, woofing angrily at himself, she knew that he was telling himself off at this point. Oh well, she figured, he would learn and she would give him many treats when they got home just because he had done well so far. Sure he hadn't found any signs of the bird itself yet, but that was fine, she knew it was going to be alright no matter what happened. He would get it one of these nights, but it was going to be irritating if they came out for more than a week for the same bird. Then they would go on to the next one, she knew with a low chuckle.

Right, he had gotten so distracted he had completely lost the trail he had been searching for already. Jack sighed a little and took a few steps back, keeping her light up so he could see by it still as he sniffed around, searching for an unusual, bird like scent. This was going to be tough, she knew, but this was going to be fine at the same time. What if he didn't get it tonight? He would get it eventually, but that was something that needed to happen no matter what. Frowning a little to herself, she shook her head, he was doing well, she needed to focus on that for now, she knew. What he was doing was good, and if they didn't find it this time, they would just come out again and figure out what to do at the moment. Jack just wanted to make sure they did this right, right?
