They had taken a few days off from hunting after Merle had caught the Night Stalker. It was settling in at home rather well and Jack was pleased to have it already. Honestly the first time they had been out and he had found it? That was pretty impressive she thought. Smiling, they headed out just before dawn and began their search for another rare bird, the Morning Glory. This was going to be great, he already had a feel for what this hunting thing was all about, so he was going to do much better this time around, or at least they both hoped so. If they didn't find it this time, there were more and more days they could come out after all. If that didn't work out, then hopefully she could talk to someone from Black Bones for a few hints. Maybe they wouldn't be in the same area.

Immediately Merle caught the sight of some pawprints of a rodent and sniffed them for a moment. Jack warned him away, however, due to his previous hunt and how distracted he had gotten. Sure, he was doing a little better, but he was still a puppy at heart and needed to mature a bit before all this happened. She smiled, hopefully he would be well sought after once he got all of his certificates, though it was going to be difficult to tell for now. As he searched for signs of the other rare bird, she knew that things would work out in the long run. He might not be the most amazing looking Ohou, he was pretty generic considering several people had the same coloring at he was, he was dear to her and that's what mattered. Smiling, she followed him with a flashlight as he tried to turn away from the pawprints yet again.

The pawprints trailed off after awhile, and, because it was the crack of dawn soon, there were noises all around. Merle lifted his head for a moment and sniffed the air, trying to capture something somewhat familiar. It would smell a little like the Night Stalker, wouldn't it? He hoped so, that's what he was going on at least, and he hoped that he could do something good with all of this. Still though, there wasn't anything he could really go off of at the moment, and so he lowered his nose to the ground to see if he could differentiate anything at the moment. This was going to be tough again, but at least they had found the other bird. Sure, Merle had found it basically by stumbling upon it, but that was fine, maybe he would do the same thing at this point as well. Whatever he had to do, she figured.

Jack knew this would take awhile after all, so settled in for the long haul. They only had a couple of hours in which to find this bird, if they could find this bird, but that was fine all around. If they didn't find it today, there was always tomorrow, and the next day, and the next until he found the damn thing. Grinning widely, she gave a small chuckle as he looked around, a little confused by all of these noises and smells. Everything was bursting to life so it was hard to figure out what was what at the moment. Honestly she was pretty happy they had done the Night Stalker before this one, if only to help him out a little bit to settle down and focus. Maybe things would work out for them this time, much like it had the last time, but she wasn't going to hold her breath.

There! That bird sounded.... different, more clear somehow. He swiveled his head and ears, trying to find what he was looking for and then put his nose to the ground, trying to track the scent as well. If he could manage to follow the sounds, even better, but he wanted to catch the scent just in case he lost the sound for now. This was exciting, and Jack caught on to his excitement as well, hoping he wouldn't lose the trail just yet. If he did, no matter, they would just start searching again, but she shouldered her bag a little higher and kept the light on Merle and the surrounding area for now so she didn't trip over anything. She just hoped this was going to be worth it, though she didn't know what it would do for him aside to get a certificate. Was she being crazy? Most likely, which was a shame, but what can you do.

The fluttering of wings was heard and Merle couldn't hear it anymore. He growled low and looked back at Jack who smiled reassuringly at him, "Don't worry, you'll get it again, go find it." Her heart broke for him, he had lost the trail, and it was probably going to take awhile for him to find it again. Oh well, at least he knew what he was looking for at this point, which was definitely good, it was just going to be quite some time no matter what happened. Pushing her hair back, she trotted after him as he loped from tree to tree, trying to find scents, sounds, and markings as he looked around. This was irritating, he had lost the trail already after just finding it, he didn't think things could get much worse than this already, but Jack knew it definitely could. At least it wasn't raining, she figured with a sigh.

Sure, maybe the rain would wash away the rodent pawprints that he seemed obsessed over at this point. Sighing, she made him focus again as he started to trail off after the rodent in question and he looked a little dejected. This was tough on him, she knew, so being tough on him herself wasn't going to help things. Kneeling down, she stroked his head and neck and fed him a few treats as he licked her face once or twice. He didn't know what was wrong with him, but he would do okay after all of this. Still, he wished he could find this thing and get it over with, it was tough to get this done and he didn't want to upset the woman any more than he already had. Jack wasn't upset though, she was slightly amused to be honest, he was really obsessed with this rodent wasn't he?

As he turned away from her and started off again, he spotted a few marks on a tree and began to sniff them. That was promising, and he finally perked up a bit as he thought about it all. This was going to be alright he knew, she wouldn't be too upset with him if they had to come out again, and he hoped that was the truth and not just him trying to make himself feel better. Yawning a little, Jack covered her mouth and shook her head, wondering what to do for now as time went on. Well, it wasn't like she could make camp, that would scare the elusive bird away most likely, or it could attract it, who knew at this point. Still though, she didn't want to chance it and so followed the Ohou for awhile as he tried to connect the markings on the trees together.

Still not much he knew, just vague scent and soft noises for now. Sighing, he kept on the trail as best as he could for now, wondering if he would actually find this bird today or if he was just thinking wishfully. It was possible, of course, he knew, but he really wanted to make her proud. Unknown to him, she was already immensely proud of him for at least catching the Night Stalker on the first try, and it was going to be great. Smiling, she patted him on the head when he got close enough and he let out a little woof. He was happy with her at the moment, but he knew that she would probably get upset a little while longer. She knew she wouldn't, but that wasn't the point she figured with a low sigh, she just knew there was no pleasing him sometimes, he took it all to heart.

Just small sounds and brief scents on the wind now, he probably wouldn't manage to find it today. Woofing, he kept at it though, he would get it done if it was the end of him! Perking up, he knew that he was ready to do what he needed to do to find this bird, and he smiled to himself as he sniffed around some more. There had to be a trail around here somewhere, right? Jack smiled a little and saw a few signs herself, but didn't want to intervene in his hunt. This was for him, he was going to have to find it if he wanted the certificate, which was going to work in his favor for future breedings. Pushing her hair back a little she wondered if he would catch on to any of them yet or not, that was the issue, she figured with a little frown.

There was the sound! He perked up again, his floppy ears standing up almost straight at the moment until he narrowed his eyes in anticipation. Hopefully he wouldn't lose the trail again, though it was going to be interesting no matter what happened, he just couldn't disappoint her again. Jack flicked the flashlight around for a moment and watched as he caught the trail once more, wondering if he would catch it this time or not. If not, then things would be interesting no matter what, they still had time, the sun was barely peeking over the horizon, and that was good, wasn't it? Jack smiled a little as she wondered what was going to happen whenever they found it, eventually and all that. He trotted toward where he heard the noises come from and wished that he could find it as easily as he had the last time, that would be good.

This one seemed to know they were following it, and the noises stopped with a flutter of wings. Jack sighed, she knew that Merle probably lost the trail already, which was an issue, but she would get over it at least. Merle probably wouldn't though, she knew, he was rough on himself whenever they hunted it would seem, and he sighed a little, plopping down and putting his head on his forepaws. This was frustrating, and he wished there was something else he could do at the moment. Why not make more puppies, at least that was fun... As he moped for awhile, Jack sighed and gave him a few treats, he would get the trail again and things would be better. However he had to believe it as well, though it could take multiple days at this point. Although it wasn't time to be done yet, she knew it might take some time.

Merle laid there for awhile, unsoothed by Jack's words she was saying for now, and just eyed her sadly. He had lost the trail twice already, he wasn't going to find it, but she would keep him coming back until he did, wouldn't she? Sighing, he looked around for a bit and found more pawprints of a rodent and woofed, lumbering to his feet finally and sighing a little. Jack yawned a bit as she watched him get up and then smiled and patted him on the back. This was going to be good, he would find the trail again after awhile, and it was going to be good no matter what. All he had to do was find it again, right? The sounds were a little more difficult than a scent, but he would manage eventually, this was the good thing about hunting, he supposed with a small wince as he looked around.

He sighed a little again and then perked his ears up. This was good, he knew, he had found the trail again! All he knew was, he could hopefully follow it this time and see what could be seen. Maybe he would actually find the bird this time, though he wasn't too hopeful. This one was a lot wilier than the other had been, he had found the trail three times now and twice he had lost it immediately afterward. That was frustrating and he didn't what to do about it. Keeping his ears perked a little, he hoped that things were going to be fine and all that. What he needed to do was get things across for now. All he had to do was find the thing and be done with it, then they could go home and then there wouldn't be any other hunting for awhile, just a single show for some other reason.
