Fall was setting in. The time of the year when plants began to lay for rest, turning the color of their leaves, and quieting until spring. One of his favorite seasons, truthfully. There was a certain beauty in watching the falling leaves. The leopard had taken time to relax in the garden. And it dawned on him that lotine remained viable for lola, even with the settling flora. Valii quietly stirred at the edge of her pool, watching the man watch her. He was gazing at the curious flower which grew on her head. Last month, a nicely spotted lola emerged from the berry produced. Ah, what would come this month was making him anxious to find out. A trip to the breeding center was in order - before it got too late in the season for lola. Xentus thought about it, trying to figure whether or not he'd be able to do this in the winter.

There really didn't seem to be much downtime for lotine, aside from the short period after a berry is produced. He supposed he'd come to find out eventually. The onset of winter would make it less thrilling an idea to wade in the lotine's pool with her, but he supposed he'd need to find other means of keeping her entertained while the facility processed the berry. Or whatever they did. He never stuck around for too long after getting Valii settled in. The staff would keep her overnight and have her ready to go home the next day, it seemed. There had to be some strange innerworkings behind the scenes, or else he'd do whatever they did himself at home. While there was no shame in asking for help, if it was something he viably could do, he would. The man shrugged and began to prepare the lotine for a short trip to the facility.

The plant-serpent had grown far less fussy about getting carted up and shipped away from her cozy little pond in the garden. The leopard did well to keep her calm, and it seemed she put up with it solely because it was he who was putting in the muscle to carry her into the wagon. Maybe she liked being held, as cumbersome as it was. Admittedly, the leopard did find the feel of her slick fur to be interesting. Something between mammalian fur and the fuzz of a peach. Velvety and soft. The beautiful colors of her pelt were entrancing too. Such a bright, vivid rainbow gradient. He did enjoy simply gazing at the ripples of color. There was a certain pride which he enjoyed about having a rainbowed lotine, not that he was one to boast. The man spent the wagon ride to the facility petting down the serpent's long body and humming gently.

"Alright, Valii. This one is sure you've grown used to this by now, hm", the man quietly spoke to the serpent as he hauled her out of the wagon. She was limp in his arms, her long body cradled as well as it could be. The end of her tail dangled down over his shoulder. And maybe he was just imagining it, but it almost seemed like she was nestling in, growing comfortable in his grasp. It was awfully cute.. And while he thought it weird if he began dotingly stroking her tendrils, he really did want to. Ah, it always struck him as a mental dilemma, how to treat the beings of higher thought.. Regarded as pets, yet perfectly intelligent enough o be recognized as a people of their own right. And he, a walking beast, would never be seen as another's possession. Oh, his head spun a bit trying to reason it out.

He the warden, they his wards. He gave them protection, even if they didn't quite require it. That's what he'd made up in his mind and so he'd stick with it. Even if he had to run himself through that line of reasoning every time he bonded with said wards. The lotine's black eyes stared admirably at the leopard, but it almost made him uncomfortable. Maybe he ought to try thinking himself as a parent. Someone to be loved, looped up upon, and listened to. He blinked at that thought. It was hard to see the sapient beasts as children (especially when they sized larger than himself) but he could try. That might make a time like this far less awkward than he thought it. And the funniest part was that the lotine likely thought nothing wrong of her treatment regarding her guardian. Xentus scoffed to himself, shaking his head as he knelt down to let Valii into the lukewarm water.

The lotine seemed to pout at the premise of being free from the leopard's arms, struggling to scoot closer to the man's chest. Her paws tentatively padded at the air, then reached to tap him. "What is it, Valii?", the leopard questioned, tilting his head with a shy smile, "Ah.. Xentus can hold you a while longer, but you are heavy my dear" Thankfully she didn't understand his words. Though, he could fix that sometime. A thing he thought to do with the lotine was to read to her. Somehow, he figured the serpent may enjoy poetry. The leopard took a seat at the edge of the pond, letting his legs dangle into the water. The lotine was sat atop his lap now, cradled closely. Valii gave a short squirm to settle in, eyes squinting as if she couldn't decide if she should let herself close them. As much as the leopard didn't want to admit it.. This was peaceful.

He never thought lotine to be cuddly, but part of him was happy to have this kind of time with Valii. He never spent enough time at the garden, regrettably. Time would be made one of these days. It was a short time before the lotine began to stir. Her head shook, eyes blinking in confusion. She'd dozed off for a moment. This was far too comfortable. Any longer, and she might just submit to the feeling. "How does Valii feel?", the leopard asking in a cooing voice, "How about a snack, hm?" Xentus did want to finally let the serpent go. As much as he was enjoying this, his arm was getting a little tired. Holding up a body as large as his own was on the taxing side. And much to his relief, the lotine seemed to be alright with moving into the water. The serpent slowly turned to the pool, staring at the water for a moment before letting herself slide into the liquid.

Now that his hands were free, he shuffled around in his pack to look for his usual trinkets. Some fertilizer, the lotine's fish, and lunch for himself. Even though he'd always brought it, he wasn't entirely sure if he needed to bring the fertilizer. Lotine didn't seem to root and absorb elements through their bodies. They were perfectly capable of eating and enjoying meals for sustenance. Along with photosynthesis, surely. Ah! Perhaps thats what those tendrils were - leaves. Strange, long leaves. He had a hard time picturing it properly, since Valii's tendrils faded to black. He did remember somewhere that lotine typically didn't have much black on their features since it would be harder to absorb sunlight. Or something of that nature. Xentus let himself get lost in thought again, running on a tangent started by fertilizer. It wasn't until the serpent spit water at his face that he snapped out of it.

Right, her fish. Valii always seemed to look forward to getting her fish to eat whenever he brought her here. "Apologies. Here you are, Valii", the leopard told her, holding her meal out for her, "Enjoy, my dear" The lotine was swift to snatch up the rainbow scaled fish, popping out of the water to grab it with her front paws. And in the time of a blink, she dipped down into the water, disappearing from sight. Always fascinating how the brightly hued creature vanished in the water so quickly. He stared at the spot where she once wat, mulling on the thought, before growing saddened. He.. Wished she came up to eat with him again. It was pleasant and comfortable. Alas, he'd respect the serpent's privacy should she wish to have it. The leopard turned his attention to his lunch tin, opening it up to remind himself of what he packed.

Funnily enough, he too had some fish. A slow-baked filet, cooked rare and seasoned with a bit of dill. On a bed of pasta.. His stomach gurgled, begging him to eat. And so he waited no longer. He began his meal, and just as the fish touched his tongue, Valii popped up out of the water with her own fish in her mouth. Her black eyes stared at the man for a moment, then she seemed to decide to push herself up onto his lap. "Welcome back", the man happily greeted his ward, "Xentus is glad Valii has decided to eat with him" The lotine seemed to have taken a few bites of her meal before coming to accompany him. He chuckled lightly, then began to eat. While Valii seemed to be quite content with her meal, he offered her a piece of her fish. The only regret he'd have about this if she then wanted her fish to be cooked like his...
