His eyes stung and his throat was scratchy, but at last Tale had beaten the sudden rush of despair back into submission. He wiped his nose with the sleeve of his shirt. Now he was the one embarrassed: Lillian was looking at him pleadingly, waiting for him to say something. Whether she hoped he would forgive her or explain what was going on or something else entirely, he couldn't tell. But he knew that she deserved some sort of answer.
"I didn't mean to freak out on you," he started.
"I make everything worse, don't I?" Lillian cut in. "I was trying to make you feel better, but I just made you feel even more bad. And now you don't want to talk to me and I'm making you. And Isa - I don't know how to make things better. I don't want to keep doing this."
Sorrow, frustration and hopelessness flooded through her words. He couldn't blame her: she was completely justified, considering how Tale had been acting since they'd first met. But he needed to figure out where to go from here.

Tale readjusted his grip on the fishing pole. He really needed to do better, but he wasn't sure how. He obviously wasn't in a place where he could necessarily change how he was feeling, but he could at least help them both get to a point where they weren't hurting each other without meaning to. They were bonded for life, right? He really needed to make sure that they could be on better terms. At least, on better terms than they were right now. He tried to put his thoughts into order.
"I'm sorry Lillian. I really am," He said. She perked up when he said her name, and he tried not to think about why that was. He had only called to her directly a handful of times since they'd been together. "It's not your fault.
I'm not going to be able to tell you everything, I don't have it in me. But how about you ask me questions you have while we sit here?"

Not exactly a thrilling catch, but...
