The rickety old mansion had certainly caught his attention. Every time he walked past, it was the only thing he could look at. Like it was calling out to him, asking him to come closer and have a look inside. Ramal had written off that thought as quite silly, of course. That is, until he heard a rumor from a passing stranger. The mansion was filled with magic, and there were treasures to be found inside. That was good enough for him! Ramal decided that he did want to take a chance at exploring the old mansion, if only to find out what the odd feeling was really all about. He grabbed a weathered old backpack, some rations for himself and Taloo, and a rope to tie around the creature’s collar. “You want to come exploring with me, don’t you?” Ramal asked Taloo, stopping just outside the gate to the mansion grounds. 1[4.7, 0.2]

The Snorfle was much more interested in what was in his bag, and began poking at it with his flexible trunk.
“Woah! Easy now. We can’t eat all the snacks before we get started,” Ramal laughed. “Here, I saved one for you, though.”
He grabbed an orange and hastily pulled the peel off. He broke it in half, and held out one half in a flat open palm. Taloo gladly grabbed the orange and stuffed the whole thing into his mouth at once. He snorted happily and looked up at Ramal as if he was asking ‘what now’?
“Don’t look at me like that, this one’s mine,” Ramal said. He pulled a slice off the orange and stuck it in his mouth pointedly. He couldn’t help but to grimace a little bit. He loved sour-sweet things like oranges, but it was still a little unusual to his palette.

“Alright, you can have it,” he said eventually, passing the remaining slices of orange over to Taloo. The Snorfle hastily grabbed them with his trunk and put the pieces one by one into his mouth.
Ramal wasn’t entirely sure why, but he really didn’t want to go alone. Since he didn’t have any non-creature friends in the city, he decided that Taloo would make an acceptable travelling companion. With their excellent hearing and sense of smell, a Snorfle should be good at listening for predators and sniffing out treasure. Even if he wasn’t, Ramal just liked to have him around. It made things a little less lonely.
He realized that he had been putting off going through the gate for some time. It was like his foot was glued to the ground. Something about this place… it made him feel like he absolutely must, and yet absolutely should not go inside, both at the same time. How many times had he walked past and wondered what was going on there?

Actually, the more he thought about it, the less he knew. Like who owned the place, why they let strangers wander around in there, and that sort of basic stuff. He was becoming a bit lost in thought when he felt a tug on the rope he was holding.
Taloo had wandered into the gate all by himself, and he had reached the end of his tether. Upon seeing that the Snorfle hadn’t burst into flames or anything dramatic like that, Ramal felt his head begin to clear. He followed Taloo, thinking that the creature had just as good of an idea where to go as he did. (None. He had no idea, and neither did Taloo.)
It was somewhat hard to tell from outside the fence, but the yard surrounding the mansion was actually very expansive. It was filled with unfamiliar plants, and stretched out in every direction as far as he could see. Land plants were pretty much all weird to him, though, so a bit of the wonder was lost on him.

As cool as plants were and all, Ramal was most interested in the piece de resistance: the mansion itself. Nothing was stopping him from just… going inside? He looked around once more, sure he would see some kind of guard or something, ready to pounce on him when he got too close. There was nobody else around. It was just him and Taloo and a big empty house. How strange. The city was full of people, and yet...
“How about you go first, Taloo?” Ramal said as he gently touched the door with his free hand. Taloo looked up at him expectantly. He couldn't open doors, or at the very least, he didn't know how to.
"Fine, you're right. You're totally right," Ramal said. As much as he wanted to keep telling jokes that nobody was around to understand, he couldn't put it off any longer. He pushed the door open with a less-than-graceful shove and stepped inside.
