It took Ashe's help, but Jinx soon got one of her lovely dragon fish into the water at the river bend. Ashe had to rush off, so she barely got to thank him and wave him off before he'd taken off on Fafnir's back. That was a lovely dragon, if she said so herself! She had big dreams of dragons, too. Starting with this species. She'd heard of their mystical transformation, but you had to get them to love you first... Otherwise they would never listen. Never respect. Never come to care for her the way she enjoyed them. Ashe had a grown one - a gold. Asuka was bossy and full of herself, but she respected Ashe.
Jinx wanted that. She wanted a whole house full of her dragon friends!
So she was starting with some fish. Her precious, Selkie, was already starting to bond with her. And now she wanted to work with her Lapis, get Lillai to like her as well.

Better get started. Jinx walked to the edge of the water, where she had last seen Lillai before she swam out further. The water didn't seem to be that high right now. It was the dry season, she figured, so things were drying up a bit. But there was enough water still for a Tat-Lung fish to swim around, and apparently even stay hidden. She just hoped she hadn't accidentally set her fish loose... Perhaps she should have - what, put a net around the whole river? That didn't make sense. And to have the floating kinds of nets for fishing in the sea... That would be impractical here.
She'd have to put some trust into the fish. She'd been feeding her for a while now, if nothing else... maybe that would be enough?
Say, was that a ripple down there? Jinx leaned in, peering closer. The flash of a retreating fish was just barely visible, and then gone.

Jinx herself had her rubber boots on, a baggy t-shirt on that slid off one shoulder at almost all times (occasionally annoyingly so), and a pair of black leggings. This wasn't her normal attire, and it was kind of silly to wear if you were fishing, but she was new to this! And had limited clothing. She didn't exactly have a lot of money, except what Ashe had paid her, and this city... Didn't meet her fashion desires anyway. So until she could make her own...
Happy with the glimpse of Lillai to know that her special fish was still hanging around, Jinx sat back on the sandy shore and toyed with the ring on her finger. She'd gotten it to better understand the Tat-Lung, but they didn't seem to talk as much while they were fish. Or maybe they were shy around her and only talked while she was gone. Or the water distorted their voices to the point that Jinx couldn't hear them..

She was here to spend time with her fish - while catching some fish! While she had a fishing pole, she wasn't sure she liked the idea of hooking a fish, but she could easily scoop one out with a net. Ashe liked to collect specimens for his aquarium, where they were well cared for. They weren't free, which she didn't want to think about... But they were safe.
Like her. Never free. Just safe - for now.
Jinx cast a glance about herself with a sigh. She was alone here, and she felt better for it, but she often felt like someone was just out of eyesight, just out of earshot. Watching, waiting. That had to be the paranoia brought on by choppy sleep! She shook her head to clear it and gripped the handle of the net harder. Fishing.
Out further, a blue creature made a big spalsh.
"You better behave yourself, Lillai!" Jinx called out. She didn't want the Lapis scaring everything!

Jinx took a few steps into the water, her boots keeping her from getting wet. She wished they were even higher, but they went up most the way to her knees so she had some room to play with before things got wet! "I don't know if you can hear me, Lillai, but we are trying to catch some fish... So if you see any, chase them my way!"
Would that make Lillai a traitor? A fish chasing other fish into a trap. Did Lillai think about things like that? Were they super smart even as fish, and Jinx was just over here babytalking to her? Jinx walked along the shoreline a ways, looking for fish... Or cool shells... Or maybe even something like a snail or a crab. She wanted to learn more about the animals found in this place, yet so far she saw nothing.
Out in the deeper parts, a shadow swam around, just below the surface. She heard the human... How strange to understand a human as well!

Jinx saw the shadow and felt a brief ripple of relief flow through her. So the tat-lung was nearby, and probably listening to her when she spoke! That was good. Lillai hadn't left her yet and might even be helping her find some cool things.
"If you see any shells, let me know. Or bring them to me!" Jinx let out a soft laugh, amused at herself. As if a fish, even if it was a baby dragon, would be able to comprehend the task enough to bring her a shell or something. It felt better to talk out loud and to have someone to talk to, at least.
She continued on, holding the net in case she found something, keeping her eyes peeled for anything of interest stuck in the mud, floating in the water, or even trapped by a rock. She saw some seaweed, not looking too great judging by the color but Jinx didn't know the most about plants. She had a lot to learn about many topics, and plants was one of those.

Jinx took a step and her foot fell on a rock. No big deal, she had decent balance and could compensate for uneven footing. But this particular rock sunk and slid in the muck, causing her foot to slide off and nearly roll on her ankle. She let out a yelp and dropped to her knees to catch herself before she landed too hard and seriously hurt her leg. In the process, her leg almost to her hip got wet, and water got in her boots. She let out a frustrated sigh, then hit the water to vent. The net had been dropped when she fell and it floated lightly next to her, bumping her knee. It had nowhere to go, thankfully, since they weren't deep and there wasn't much of a current.
Concerned when she heard the splashing, Lillai swam back, swimming closer to the shore to see where the human girl was and what she was doing to cause such a raucous in the first place.

"Oh, Lillai," Jinx said, sighing again lightly. "Thank you for coming to check on me, but I'm okay." She offered the lovely blue Tat-Lung a smile, her head tilting just a bit. Her brown hair, tied in a loose ponytail to keep it out of the way, had fallen loose and some strands fell into her face. She used a wet hand to tuck them behind an ear. With the same wet hand, Jinx reached out to Lillai, drumming her fingers on the surface of the water. The tat-lung started, at first frightened by the sudden noise and movement. She darted back, then swam slowly forward, catching back up. It was just Jinx, she'd realized, and the noise wasn't that bad.
"You're a smart girl, Lillai," she said to her fish. Slowly, Jinx started to stand up. It was a little chillier now that her pants were wet - any breeze blowing through gave her a shiver. Thankfully the sun was still warm and she wouldn't die.

The girl was much better equipped to handle the cold than her employer was. She knew Ashe wouldn't be out here, getting soaked, if he didn't need to. But here she was, almost sitting in the water, just for the chance to explore and try something new. The day might be unseasonably warm, comparatively speaking, yet it was still the dry season. She knew she would be coming back already, when there was hot sunshine beating down on tanning skin and jumping in the water was almost mandatory.
And yet, after just this long, Jinx was debating if she should keep her wet clothes on, or strip them off and just jump in. The water was cold, but not freezing, and if she swam, her body would warm up, and staying under the water - minus her head - she would be out of the wind...
She shook her head, her brown hair flying into her face again.

The moment of crazy that had gripped her released her shortly after - it would be insanity to go swimming right now, as much as she wanted to. She was better off dealing with her legs being a little chilly, rather than her lips and skin turning blue.
"There's something wrong with me, Lillai!" She said, her voice bright with amusement. "I almost jumped right in there with you and went swimming. Too bad I don't have scales of my own, and those pretty tailfins..." She crooned down to the water.
Too much too soon, the fish turned and swam off a bit. She'd made sure Jinx was okay and now it was time for her to get back to searching and exploring. It was time for Jinx to get to work, too! She picked up the net, whose handle was floating near her leg still, and she dragged the net part through the water slowly as she started walking.

It wasn't too long before Jinx found something snagged in her net. At first, she was delighted, and let out a gasp of excitement. But as she brought the net closer to examine her new fish - she hoped it was something cute, or pretty, or at least something Ashe didn't have yet for the Keeps' Aquarium - she felt the excitement drain away. "What are you?" She asked it, squinting. It was like a fat carrot with legs. Decidedly not the pretty fish she was looking for! She plucked it out, making a face as those weird spider-like legs squirmed around. She dropped it back into the water, then continued on her way. She didn't notice that it followed after her, as if determined to go with her.
Lillai had taken to swimming alongside Jinx. Not too close, but close enough to hear the girl's voice. She was finding she enjoyed the human's company, feeling almost like they had a shared kinship.

Lillai swam along, keeping her eye out for anything interesting. It was a beautiful day to be out swimming, especially when you were a fish and didn't mind the cold as much as a human, instead of stuck at the estate in the same river and pond as always. She wanted to see everything, to learn everything. Rocks, plants, other fish - she was keeping a keen eye on it all, and ready to alert the human girl walking near her.
Jinx dragged the net through the water, trying to both keep her head up and her gaze forward to see what she was going to be walking into, while also looking down into the water and searching for fish or anything - especially the critters too slow to get out of the way. She tripped a couple of times when the footing became uneven. Rocks jutted up, smooth pebbles rolled underfoot, small holes made by currents and creatures opened up, mud grabbed at her boots...

It was almost dangerous out here! Jinx decided to try to focus on where she was going, and let luck guide her fishing net. If she was meant to find something, she figured it would find its way into her net whether or not she was watching it go in. Every twenty steps or so, she would pause, look down, and check her net. A couple of times, there was some seaweed or other type of plant clinging to the net, but no exciting fish. Each time this happened, she shrugged her shoulders, gave a small sigh, and continued on.
Lillai swam along, the boring waters seemingly empty. Then, all of a sudden, a fish darted in front of her. It must have been startled out of a hiding place that Jinx walked too close to. Luckily for it, the fish missed the net and darted to freedom. Unluckily for the fish, Lillai was there and she was a fast swimmer, too!
