Setting
Far outside the city and the labs lies the great mountainous cliffs simply referred to as, "the mines."
Tall cliffs jut up into the sky, covered sparsely with little shrubs and tiny patches of grass. Great ravines wind through the cliffs, exposing many large caves. There are a few well worn paths that are not too dangerous to travel that lead to well explored caverns. Other areas are significantly more difficult to navigate, requiring sure footing and a quite a bit of climbing to get to.
The entrances into the mines are cut into the rocks, some huge, as big as a house, and others small, barely enough for a person to wriggle into. Inside these bigger and more well traveled caves, the walls and floor are worn down, picked at by many hands and tools. It is safer in here, where others have worn away the hazards, but one must go deeper to find the real treasures.
Deeper into the mines, it gets darker and darker until there is no more natural light. There are countless winding tunnels, some of them as big as subways, and others so small they must be squeezed into. Many are blocked off by huge piles of rock. Centuries of dripping water creates stalactites and stalagmites, some tiny and others bigger than people.
A few channels of water run through the mines, though often not very deep. Occasionally, they flow like full rivers, encompassing the entire tunnel, and must be waded through. Other times they lead to shallow lakes in large empty caves. Some are filled with weird alien fish and sightless salamanders, though they're mostly devoid of life.
The mines hold many dangers. There are many sudden drops, loose and sharp rocks, and the constant fear of cave ins. Some passageways are filled with toxic natural gas, and others with sweeping water flows. One wrong shovelful, and a wall of dirt and gravel can bury a miner alive.
If you go deep enough, you may even find a pool or river of lava...
