October One of the most disconcerting things about the mansion was its ability to make Leafy lose sense of time. She and Lotus had been in the mansion, solving a puzzle based around statues. After that, she blacked out. When she revived, she found herself in the same room. The décor had changed dramatically and the puzzle had been solved while she had been out. “Looks like a door opened,” she murmured. Lotus seemed just as unsettled as she was. The two of them headed towards the door, figuring that they had no other option. Leafy still wanted to explore the mansion despite the strangeness. Lotus was relatively easy-going when it came to what the girl wanted to do. She was simply content with human companionship. They stepped through the door, prepared for any dangers that they might face. “If I remember right, October has plenty of monsters in the mansion! Maybe we’ll get lucky and find one.” (Lotus 3 1/5, 9 1/5) 1

Lotus wagged her tail in excitement, though she suspected that the halfbreed was simply excited because she was. The mansion was admittedly spooky during this time of the year. Leafy was still determined to track down a monster, however. It had a high potential for danger, but she wasn’t frightened. Lotus might not be much of a fighter, but Leafy felt confident in her own abilities. Finding a monster would take a bit of time though.
“Keep your eyes peeled for any signs of monsters! That includes scratch marks and prey bones. If there’s those signs present, then it’s likely there’s a monster about as well!”
Lotus barked in excitement, getting worked up over Leafy’s excitement. The girl found herself grinning as she started to explore the new room. The room itself was rather large. The only source of light was from plastic green glow in the dark stars that had been stuck to the ceiling.

Leafy squinted in the darkness. She wasn’t afraid of the darkness. The number of hours she had spent exploring the mines ensured that she had grown used to it. Lotus would be less experienced. She stuck close to Leafy, relying on the girl to protect her in the unfamiliar area. Perhaps it would be of use to take her down to the mines sometime. She suddenly felt antsy, as though she should be hard at work in the mines. She wasn’t exactly broke, but she could always do with more credits. Ever since Piko Pets started buying pocket pets from people, that had opened up another source of income for the girl. She’d considered getting a job, but she was fairly content with how things were in her life for now. Maybe sometime in the future, when she was more confident in what she wanted to do. Maybe then she would choose one.

She didn’t like to think of things like jobs too much. For now, she wanted to focus on the mansion and maybe find some treasure.
“Do you see anything, Lotus?” she asked the halfbreed.
Lotus sniffed the area carefully, searching for anything of interest. Leafy wondered for a moment what she’d find interesting. She followed the halfbreed around as she investigated the various areas in the room. Leafy wondered if she’d be motivated by food, but there wasn’t any to be found in this room. Even if there was, she suspected that it would be long rotten. She shuddered at the thought.
“Let’s see what we can find.”
Leafy squinted as she looked around the room. It seemed unremarkable to her. It felt more like an abandoned house than anything the mansion usually threw at her. If she had to identify the type of room she was in, she’d probably consider it to be a living room.

There was a sofa located against the right wall. Leafy frowned as she recognized that it was blocking the door. She would need to move it when she wanted to leave. For now, she was content to stay in the room, even if it was just for a moment. Lotus approached the couch, sniffing it in curiosity. Leafy scratched her behind the ears quickly before snapping her attention back to the room.
“There’s always secrets hidden in these rooms,” she commented.
There were shelves lining the walls, filled with a variety of miscellaneous objects. She approached them, wishing that she had thought to bring her flashlight. She didn’t like taking along her mining tools into the mansion. She didn’t want to risk them breaking. Lotus followed her, tail wagging as she walked. The halfbreed’s enthusiasm kept Leafy grounded. If they found any monsters, she would need to be courageous if she wanted to stay safe.

As Leafy was exploring, she found a few items of interest. She placed them all in her backpack, ensuring that they would stay safe. Lotus wasn’t particularly interested in the items. Leafy supposed that a couple of leaves, a stick pocketpet, and a jar of eyeballs didn’t particularly appeal to her. The halfbreed would probably appreciate a ball more than any of these items. Though if they found one in the mines, it would probably be too dirty to play with. The mansion seemed awfully run-down this month.
“I don’t really want to stick around in this room, how about you?” she asked Lotus.
The halfbreed yipped in agreement, though Leafy supposed she would have agreed no matter what the question was. The Orbicus was a people pleaser, that was for certain. She approached the couch, intent on moving it out of the way. It was heavy, but she managed to move it with a bit of strength.

Once the door was accessible, Leafy and Lotus were able to enter the next room. The girl kept her eyes peeled for any signs of monster tracks. She was determined to find something unusual this trip. The next room was filled with cobwebs. Leafy didn’t have much fondness for arachnids, but she didn’t have a crippling fear of them either. She squinted in the low light, trying to determine if there were any spiders present or not. Lotus didn’t seem particularly bothered by the prospect of spiders. However, there didn’t seem to be any present in the room.
“Are spiders even common anymore? Or have they all been replaced by Weavers? That’d be a little strange considering Weavers are rather intelligent,” she mused.
She owned a couple of Weavers, but she’d never spent any significant amount of time with them. The creatures were still a bit of a mystery to her.

Leafy blew on the cobwebs, trying to clear some out of the way without touching them. Cobwebs tended to cling to human skin and could be difficult to get rid of. Lotus traipsed around the room without such worries. The girl was impressed with her ability to remain so nonchalant about things. Leafy found herself growing even more fond of the halfbreed. Of course, she’d always had a soft spot for Vulticus in general. She had the same attachment to their crosses as well. Her mind drifted to Antony and she wondered what he was up to. Maybe he’d be up for another mansion trip once she was finished here with Lotus.
“We won’t be leaving without finding a monster first, that’s for sure!” Leafy declared.
The cleared away as many cobwebs as she could before she had a real chance to explore. She found herself in what appeared to be an old bedroom.

Being in a bedroom that wasn’t her own made her feel awkward. She’d never really had her own room even. She’d bought a farm rather recently and only sometimes spent the night there. She preferred sleeping in her kennel alongside her pets. That way she knew they hadn’t left her. She’d heard of some people that had properties large enough to house all their creatures, but Leafy didn’t have the credits to do that for herself. Maybe one day, if she’d saved up enough she’d be able to do the same.
“Well monsters like to hide under beds, so maybe there’s one under this one!”
Lotus yipped in agreement darting over to the bed and trying to dive underneath. It was low to the ground however and it seemed rather difficult to get underneath.
“I’d bet a shape-shifting monster could!”
Leafy lowered herself onto her belly, trying to see if she could peer underneath the bed.

The room was dark, but there was enough light that Leafy could faintly see underneath the bed. The floorboards were old and rather uncomfortable to lay on, but she had to remain there while she investigated.
“I think I see scratch marks,” she told Lotus.
The halfbreed danced in place, excited by Leafy’s excitement. Scratch marks were a sign that something had been here. The rest of the floorboards showed signs of splintering with age and lack of upkeep. But these scratches were symmetrical, definitely made by a creature with sharp claws. There was even a possibility that the scratches had been made by a ghost. Leafy hadn’t seen a real ghost before. She supposed part of it had to do with her lack of knowing any dead people. At least nobody in recent years. She stood back up with renewed vigor. If there was a monster to be found, it wouldn’t stay hidden for long.

Leafy startled at the sound of something scratching the wooden floorboards. Lotus growled. Her attention focused on a pocketpet across the room. The small creature carried a long blade which it was using to score deep gouges into the wood. If it had been a larger creature, Leafy might have been afraid. But pocketpets were small and unlikely to cause much damage. If she were careful, she shouldn’t be scratched. She felt affection swell in her chest as Lotus burst forward with a deep growl rumbling in her throat. She had never seen the halfbreed to show such a fierce side. It was certainly intriguing and Leafy was grateful for the sudden protection.
“That’s a good girl Lotus. Keep just like that!”
She used the halfbreed to corner the pocketpet. When it didn’t have anywhere to run, she darted forward and scooped it up. Then she placed it securely into her backpack.

“Look it has a friend!” she exclaimed as she laid eyes on a twig pocket pet. “These should fetch a nice price at Piko Pets!”
Lotus relaxed once both pocketpets were stashed safely away. Leafy hoped they didn’t destroy themselves in the confines of her backpack. It would be unfortunate if they were to become unsellable. She didn’t have much use for pocketpets on their own. She only cared for the value that they were worth.
“Don’t worry, I would never think of you that way. I love you!” she cheerfully told Lotus.
The halfbreed yipped and followed the girl happily across the room. There was a stash of wax leaves in here as well. They could also be worth a fair amount to the right buyer. Otherwise, she’d simply use the leaves to buy some items for herself. She didn’t know what was available for purchase, but there would likely be something useful.

Leafy found herself feeling rather accomplished. The pocketpets might not have made particularly vicious monsters, but she had managed to track and capture them. With the help of Lotus of course. She grinned at the halfbreed, taking a moment to revel in their victory. She leaned over and gave the creature a good scratch behind the ears.
“I suppose we ought to move forward now. There likely isn’t anything left to find in here.”
She glanced around, trying to see if she could find a door. To her surprise, it wasn’t that difficult to find. Perhaps the mansion knew she was on a mission to hunt down monsters. She wouldn’t be leaving until she found something of real value. Lotus would follow by her side, ever loyal to the girl. She felt a surge of confidence now that she knew that Lotus wouldn’t shy away from battle if it became necessary.
