She walked in and found it stocked full of shiny appliances. A few cups and bowls were piled on the countertop, along with some utensils. The refrigerator was empty, save for a half-eaten apple. Kilowatt looked eagerly in the fridge, but turned his nose up at the apple. Leafy guessed he must prefer meat. He gave her another questioning glance, but she had nothing for him. She turned to the closest cabinet instead and opened the cupboard door. Inside was a collection of spices. She grabbed a small jar, filled with dried herbs, and tossed it into her bag. She didn't know why she wanted it, she just knew that she did. They had better luck with the knives, finding a sharp carving knife, a serrated breadknife, and a chef's knife. She left the oven mitts behind, deciding against taking something like that. She put them in a spot where she could find them, however.

Kilowatt followed along obediently as she moved through the kitchen, grabbing whatever she figured they could use. She had no idea what dictated the whims of the mansion, but she hoped there was food somewhere nearby. She had already learned that running low on food was not a good situation to find oneself in.
Not finding anything more of use, they decided to leave the kitchen.
There was another set of stairs they could take, and when she reached the bottom of the stairs, she recognized that they were entering a basement. It was dark and dusty, like everything else in the mansion it felt like. There were cobwebs hanging everywhere, so she pulled out her flashlight up and lit the area up with a beam of light. She saw a large table and chairs in the center of the room. Next to them was a rack holding several suitcases, most likely long abandoned.

Several clothing racks hung from the ceiling above them. She looked away as she spotted a pile of clothes on the floor. Some of the garments had been worn, others still looked as pristine as they would have if they had come straight out of a department store. She wrinkled her nose in distaste at the unclean ones. Seemed rather silly for the mansion to include those. Kilowatt didn’t have the same qualms. Instead, he found that the clothes smelled rather interestingly!
Leafy poked her head through the racks, looking for a larger piece of fabric. There was a stretch of fabric near the back of the closet that had been cut into a large rectangle. She took it off its hanger and draped it over her arm. She looked around for any other pieces of cloth to add to her growing bundle, but only found two pairs of pants.

She carried them both, leaving the rest behind. She made sure everything she grabbed was clean. At least, she hoped it was.
Kilowatt sniffed at the new clothes curiously, but Leafy ignored him. She had no time to play with him, and it didn't matter much if he dirtied her things. She got to work, tearing the pants into what could pass as a rope. She didn't get very far with the other sets of fabric, but she needed something to cut them. That's when she remembered the knives she had grabbed earlier. It wouldn't be the prettiest, but they should cut just fine. She sat down at the table and began cutting the fabric into strips. It wasn't long before the batteries on her flashlight burned out, making the basement pitch black. Kilowatt immediately growled at the sudden darkness. She pulled out her backpack and began to search for new ones.

When she found them, she quickly inserted them into her flashlight and switched it on. The light was dim, but it made the difference between being consumed in complete darkness, and it allowed her to continue with her task. She had to make sure that she didn't get caught in the dark without batteries or her flashlight. She and Kilowatt got to work exploring the basement.
It was clear that there hadn't been much activity here in quite some time. Everything was dusty and the smell of stale air permeated the place. Leafy wondered how many people had been here before, and if they were all long gone. She felt unnerved for a moment, as though someone were about to sneak up on them in the darkness. She took her flashlight and performed a quick scan of life in the area. She took her flashlight and performed a quick scan of life in the area. Kilowatt scuttled around the floor behind her, chasing after dust bunnies.

There was an open door leading to a small hallway on the other side of the basement. She checked the door out, only to find nothing but a stairway leading upwards. She decided against heading up it for now.
As they ventured through the dimly lit basement, she lamented for a moment that she had gotten used to walking through carpeted flooring. She had foregone her shoes today, out of habit or force she wasn’t certain. She would have liked to have them now. Her feet were getting sore, and she wasn't particularly happy to be without them at the moment. It was only a few moments later when she realized that if she came across a pair, she could pilfer them from the mansion. Kilowatt was still in a playful mood. He was content to chase shadows and pounce on the occasional bug that had the misfortune of running into him.

They needed to figure out what their purpose for being here was. Leafy recalled that she was meant to track something down, but she couldn't quite remember what that was meant to be. She thought the thing she was meant to capture was actually a creature. She hoped it was a friendly one, and wasn't too much hassle to track down. As for her, she wanted to find the creature and then the exit. She didn't feel like lingering too much longer. After all, Kilowatt was still a baby. If anything had happened to either of them, it would be quite a problem.
Just as she was about to give up hope completely, she heard the soft scratch of claws on concrete as something walked around the basement. She crouched low to the ground and pressed herself flat, peering into the darkness beneath the stairs ahead of them. Kilowatt moved close to her.

As quietly as she could manage, she slid along the ground towards the staircase. She reached out with her hand and felt the cool, damp concrete with her fingertips. The lights began to flicker and for a moment, her flashlight threatened to give out entirely. She tapped her flashlight against her thigh, trying to get it to stabilize. Then, she held it steady until she could see where she was stepping. She saw the faint outline of a creature, and her heart skipped a beat. It was a dog-like creature. When Leafy moved closer, she could easily identify the creature as a Vulticus, one of the v2 ones. It didn't appear to have noticed them yet. Kilowatt was quite intimidated, electing to ask Leafy to pick him up so that he could be held safely. She obliged his request and set him onto her shoulder. It didn't take much longer for the Vulticus to notice their presence. (Kilowatt 11 4/5, 21 4/5) 59

The Vulticus lifted its head up, sniffing curiously. It looked at the flashlight and Kilowatt curiously for a moment before it turned back to Leafy. Upon closer examination, Leafy noticed a strange red, paw shaped mark on the Vulticus's rear.
"We're not here to hurt you," Leafy tried to speak soothingly. The action was a little difficult for her, but she had more compassion for creatures than she typically had in human interactions. "Is there any way we can help you?" She waited for a response.
The Vulture's fur stood on end as though it were preparing itself for the fight that was to come. But its agitation wasn't directed towards Leafy and Kilowatt. It seemed to be looking around the room, as if searching for a way out. A large hole in the wall near the staircase was illuminated by her flashlight as they approached. It was large enough to fit through.

July Leafy felt herself drawn to the mansion this month, as though the magic deep within was calling straight to her. She had decided on taking Alder, a baby Gallor, along with her. The journey might be dangerous for him, but she also thought it would give him some experience and serve to toughen him up. She wanted him to learn how the world worked outside of the kennels, to make friends with other species and see things beyond the limits of the city. The mansion was a sight to behold. A tall, twisting tower, formed from driftwood and stacks of bonfire sticks. From what she could see, it was never-ending. It must have been the most beautiful thing that had ever existed. Well maybe not quite, but it was certainly pretty. Leafy carried Alder and began to head towards it. Alder appeared fascinated. It was clear he had never seen anything like this before. "We'll be starting on the ground floor, so it's a long way up to the top," Leafy remarked.
Being non-sapient, Alder failed to respond with words. The girl was completely unfazed, however. She approached the front doors with a skip in her step, happy to be on an adventure once again. The wooden door creaked loudly as it was pushed open rather forcefully. Leafy opened and half closed it a few times to get it to repeat the noise again. Alder kicked her from his place in her arms.
The inside of the mansion didn't quite match the outside. Bright red painted wooden walls contrasted greatly with the dull brown of the driftwood and wood sticks, creating a brilliant clash of colours. The room itself was rather gaudy, like one would expect from a surf shack and not a magical reality defying mansion. Leafy took a moment to take her surroundings in, feeling a bit rusty.

There was a wooden seashell stand in the center of the room, but there wasn't any person manning the stand, so the shells were up for grabs. Leafy eagerly approached, not one to say no to free seashells. As she came to the stand, however, the sound of water dripping from the roof caught her attention. A second later, a single raindrop plopped down from the ceiling, hitting her directly on her nose.
Alder let out a snort of amusement as the girl she her head rapidly from side to side. She looked up to see if it was indeed simply water that fell onto her. The droplet wasn't the only one, though. The water began to pour from the roof in a heavy downpour. The room had suddenly been engulfed in a torrential downpour and now they needed to find somewhere to shelter. She quickly decided that the seashell stand would have to do.

Alder and she were barely covered by the wooden stand, but Leafy wasn't about to complain about that. Anything was better than simply standing out in the rain. Alder was in a state of disbelief. He was wet, the room was dark and gloomy, the wooden floor was becoming slick with water, and the sound of rainfall was everywhere. This wasn't like his little enclosure. He didn't quite know what to do but trusted his owner to protect him. Eventually, the rainfall began to peter out. And soon, it stopped entirely. Alder was huddled behind her, shivering and pressing close to her. Leafy took a moment to warm the Gallor baby up with friction from her hands. When he stopped shivering, Leafy picked him up and stood up. Leafy scanned the room for any signs of a door. It took her a few moments, but she eventually spotted one that appeared indented in the wall.

It was a small, wooden, seashell-shaped door with a seashell-shaped keyhole. Leafy carefully approached the door with Alder still held firmly in her arms. She tried to open it, but it was soon apparent that she'd need a key. She turned back to check the seashell stand and was quick to find exactly what she was looking for. She frowned a bit shocked that she had missed such an obvious thing. She'd have to be more observant next time.
Leafy placed the seashell key in the keyhole and turned it with a click. The door opened to reveal a very long, straight corridor that stretched out into darkness. The floor underneath was still wooden, but everything was a little hard to make out. When she brushed her hand against the wall, she drew back a palm that was coated in sand. Alder remained pliant in her arms, enjoying the warmth of her body.
