As Leafy was reading, Kuru trotted closer to listen. On his way over, his front foot hit an object and he stopped to investigate it. Leafy glanced over as well, making sure that he wasn’t about to play with something that could harm him. She relaxed when she saw he’d gotten distracted by a dream catcher. Dream catchers were harmless. Unless it was magic or something equally as crazy. However, it seemed fine to let him play with it. If it caused harm, she should have already identified it as such.
“It seems fine to let him play with that,” Antony chimed in.
Leafy agreed and turned back to the story. Kuru sat down in front of her, the dream catcher gripped in his front feet. Felusine feet were a strange combination between feet and hands so he was able to grip it just like she might have.
“One night when the curfew was in effect, the princess grew restless. Hunger gnawed at her empty belly. She’d been allowed to eat normal, people food, but she hadn’t had a chance to quench her thirst for human blood. When the moon was at its highest, she made her move to begin the hunt.”

“The princess escaped her room once again. When she reached the center of the town, there were no people to be found. In distress, she turned her attention towards the houses. If she could get inside, she would be able to feast. The closest house was a large, rundown manor. Its occupant was a local recluse. Rumor had it that he had killed his wife and child in a moment of insanity.”
“You know if this is the guy that gets eaten, he kind of had it coming,” Antony commented.
Leafy nodded in agreement. Kuru growled lowly at the interruption to the story. He wanted to hear more not discuss it in great detail.
“She tried to enter the house through a broken window. Her body was unable to fit, so she used her paws to unlock the door. The door was wide enough to allow her to enter. Once she was inside, she smelled a delicious scent and could hardly wait to sink her teeth into the warm flesh of a man.”
Leafy shuddered as she read along. The story was gruesome for her. Was it gruesome for her pets as well? Both of them were carnivores and it wouldn’t be taboo for them to eat human flesh.

The images around them changed to represent the strange, old house. For a moment, Leafy was reminded of the mansion she was currently in and the thought creeped her out. She turned back to the story, wanting to read what happened next.
“The princess would be haunted with what she was about to do. In her current form, she had no control over the beast she had become. She climbed the stairs with a great intensity burning in her chest. Her beastly form snarled at the thought of the hunt. She approached the bedroom, her nose guiding her to the smell of fresh meat. The door was closed so she was forced to tear it down with her massive front claws. The wood splintered under her touch and the door cracked open. The man had been sleeping in the bed. Now he was awake and face to face with the sight of a ghastly beast.”
Kuru yipped in excitement. Leafy wondered if she should worry that he was drawing so much entertainment from a scary story. The story was interesting though and she was also drawn in. The images that changed around them helped to make the whole thing seem real.

"The princess leaped forward and tore the man apart. It was an entirely bloody affair. One that ended in a dead body. However, the man did not die. In the end, he was no man at all. He was a beast himself, sent to vanquish the monster that the princess had become. His body healed itself from the harsh attack. The princess found herself in a predicament. She found herself locked in a ring of magic. She found herself unable to move and unable to breath. Just when she thought it was the end for her, the house around her melted."
Leafy shuddered at the direction the story was headed. She could see that she was close to the end. Kuru listened intently, his tail lashing back and forth as he absorbed the story. Antony was intrigued as well, though like Leafy, he needed the breaks in between reading just as much as she did. She wondered how much of the story Kuru understood. He seemed to be enjoying it a lot, which made Leafy happy, but it also had her a little bit concerned. The Felusine might have odd tastes, but that didn't mean anything too harmful would come of it.

“The princess found herself transported to the tower that would soon become her home. As long as she breathed, she would remain trapped there, unable to transform back into her human self. She would be trapped as a beast for the rest of her foreseeable life to atone for the atrocities she had committed. The village returned to normal. People could travel about freely without getting eaten. If you happen to pass by a tower hidden in the woods, it’s best to avoid it. You may stumble across a wayward beast princess with an appetite for human flesh. The end.”
The ending of the story might have been grim, but it was intriguing. Leafy wondered if it were a true tale. The book appeared to have been written for children, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t true. Kuru yipped in delight as the story finished. Leafy grinned back at him. She wished she had more books to read to him, but she was starting to wrap up her mansion adventure. She’d found some pocket pets that would sell for a decent amount. She would have to discuss a plan with Antony on how they would leave this strange and startling place.

“I think we should consider heading back soon,” she commented.
“I suppose that’s fine if you’ve figured we’ve accomplished enough. Are you sure you don’t want to keep going until you find one of those famed mansion critters?” Antony asked her.
Leafy considered his words for a moment. “I still want to find one, but I think I’ll swap out the team. You both deserve a rest even if I want to keep searching. Besides, I want to give you your injection and you’ll need some time to recover from that. Then I’ll have to spend time training you your new moves and I don’t want you too tired for that,” she rambled on.
“That sounds like a good plan. I certainly won’t say no to having my injection sooner rather than later,” Antony commented.
Kuru yipped as well, though Leafy couldn’t tell if he was giving his opinion on the situation or if he was simply excited. He seemed tired enough that leaving should be no issue for him. Perhaps when she got back, she could take one of his siblings out from her kennel. She hoped she could spend some time with the others. She had kind of been favouring Kuru out of that litter so far.

When one wanted to leave the mansion, the mansion was pretty good about leading them back outside. However, the exit outside would only be shown to her once she was able to figure out how to leave this room. She would need both Kuru and Antony to help her brainstorm how to get out of this room.
“I see a door,” she commented. “But it definitely looks locked. The lock on it appears like it can be opened if we find the correct key.”
“That sounds like a plan. How about we both search half of the room and if we find anything, we let the other know,” Antony suggested.
Leafy nodded her head vigorously. It definitely sounded like a plan they could pull off. It felt almost like a competition, trying to see who could find the key fastest. Kuru decided to follow Leafy as the girl set off to explore the rest of the room. The pictures on the wall were frozen as the tower from the story. The surrounding area depicted a forest at night. It was extremely pretty and Leafy could hardly tear her gaze from it. It disheartened her a bit that she wouldn’t get to see anymore pictures.

Antony was intently searching the other side of the room. Leafy felt motivated to complete the search of her side as well. Kuru stuck close to her. He wasn’t one that was able to scout with his eyes, but his other senses still worked perfectly fine. They just needed to find a simple key. There didn’t seem to be all too much in this room that could hide a key. It would be simply a matter of finding where it was located. There were a few lamps in the room. If the mansion realized she wanted to leave quickly, the hiding place might be one that was easy to find.
“I think it’s probably somewhere obvious,” she told Antony.
“Yeah I think I’d agree. You should probably check the lamps seeing as I am unable to,” he replied.
Leafy nodded and approached the closest lamp. She leaned up onto her tiptoes. The lamp was one of those floor lamps that had a bowl like shape. It could definitely hide a key if it wanted to. Her hands connected with something small and metallic. She gripped the object and pulled it out revealing the key she was looking for.
“Let’s get out of here,” she said.

The dream-like whimsical nature of the mansion in May inspired Leafy to bring a rather wisp like creature back for exploration. Cicero was a halfbreed that was soft as silk. She had yet to discover his personality, but he seemed sweet enough. The small halfbreed perched on her shoulder. Leafy couldn’t tell whether he liked her or simply viewed her as the perfect place to perch. They walked casually to the mansion doors. Leafy contemplated staying outside for a moment, but the inside of the mansion promised great adventure. She shivered as she raised her hand to touch the door. It felt almost like there was magic swirling within the handle. It felt almost as though it could shock her. She opened the door quickly, stepping in quickly before it could shut behind her. The room was dark and it made Leafy want to grab a flashlight and switch it on. (Cicero 0 1/5, 3 1/5) 56

Leafy fumbled around for a light switch, deciding she should check for one first before she worried about handling a flashlight. Cicero didn't seem bothered by the lack of light. He was content to continue perching on her shoulder, safe from any harm that he might encounter. He didn’t have much in the way of reaction to the room. Instead, he seemed more eager to cuddle with Leafy than anything else. His body was light and airy. Leafy was worried that too much contact with him would cause him to disappear entirely. She wasn’t entirely certain how much substance there was to him. Her hands finally managed to find a light switch and she flicked it on. It wasn’t conventional light that filled the room, however. It was almost as though the light switch had turned on the stars in a night sky. It wasn’t much light, but Leafy was able to see around the room.

Leafy felt Cicero’s talons shift into her shoulder as he peered around the room. He seemed to wake up a bit with the increase in light. Leafy winced slightly, though the halfbreed’s talons didn’t do much in the way of harm. His bodyweight was near nonexistent. She turned to focus on the room as well. There were tiny pebbles underfoot that sparkled in the starlight. Leafy reached down and picked on up. It was smooth like glass and felt soft underneath the touch of her hand. She tossed it away and grinned at the noise it made as it clanked against the tile. She had to stop herself from picking up another and recreating the noise. She had better things to do.
“Seems like a safe enough room,” she remarked aloud.
Cicero wasn’t one to make conversation. Leafy still felt more comfortable when she voiced her thoughts aloud though. It made her feel less alone.

Leafy listened for a moment, trying to hear for any monsters. She felt safe in the room, but there was no telling if there was something dangerous that could hide from her senses. She wondered if the Aolani had better senses than she did. She was certainly smarter than he was, but she didn’t know much about his biology. She focused on the room, scanning around for any hidden treasure chests or strange openings or hidden passages. The starlight was pretty, but it served to make Leafy feel a little bit iffy about the whole thing. The longer she stayed underneath the pretty lights, the more she felt the steady hum of magic. It was similar to finding a magic crystal, but not nearly as powerful a pull. She wondered if she was feeling the mansion’s own magic. She didn’t know the first thing about how it worked, but she knew it existed.

The Aolani appeared a little on edge. It was as though he could feel the magic as well. It was like a constant presence, flowing through the walls, hiding beneath the floor. It almost made her feel itchy.
“I don’t think it’s magic that can be harvested,” she mused.
She had heard about the possibility of finding magic crystals in the mansion like one could in the mines. However, the occurrence was exceptionally rare and she’d never experienced it herself. At least not to her immediate recollection. The magic she felt was less potent, more like a static shock than a full-blown current of electricity. She could only ignore the magic for now, instead focusing on what she could see and touch. She began to pace around the room, quickly checking for anything of interest. She came across some strange knickknacks, but none of them were of any monetary value and thus, they were unimportant to her.
