Renathan wanted to find at least six bells, that sounded right to him; but he had really been hoping to find ten, because that sounded like a good and round number to him. He did not know exactly why the mansion was the way it was, but the well in the past seemed to prefer larger numbers to smaller numbers of offerings. The bells seemed just numerous enough to work, but he needed a lot more than three for the mansion to be happy with it, he was sure. Renathan started checking around the room with Shy Guy in tow. At first, he looks in the shelves across the room curiously and cautiously, making sure to check for any dangers before sliding them all the way open. So far, nothing had jumped out and attacked his face or anything... It was kind of sad that he was expecting that kind of thing now that he thought about it.

Renathan wondered exactly how his choices up to this point had brought him to this near constant wariness that caused him to expect bad things to happen. He was very lucky, and had proven that to himself many, many times. He was sure that his survival during the times he'd gotten knocked off of his sarane during the breaking processes had been as lucky as they were terrifying to get through, and he was glad that he didn't have it any other way. He got himself into a ton of trouble because he tended to overestimate his abilities. It was terrifying to think about. Renathan slid another drawer open, and saw something a bit shiny in the back... When he put his face down, he managed to get a face full of some kind of bright white feathery thing. Shy Guy grabbed Renathan [ow!] by the back of his mane using his teeth, pulling him away from whatever that thing was!

Renathan took approximately two seconds to figure out what in the name was even going on; the first thing he registered was a pain in the back of his neck, which was quickly understood to be Shy Guy pulling him away from the perceived danger. The white feathery thing was, in fact, a tiny pocketpet not any bigger than one of Renathan's fingers, that was some kind of white and black spotty bird. Renathan had a moment in which he took the chance to catch the pocket pet; easy enough done by making a sort of cage out of his hand. He breathed a bit heavily, and glanced back at Shy Guy, unsure whether to be grateful of the 'help' or angry because now his mane was sore. The equillion didn't seem to have pulled any of his hair out, so he decided to pet him on the muzzle instead, to let him know he was thankful for that.

Renathan put the pocketpet in his backpack as well, glad that it had not tried to bite him. He wondered how long it had been stuck inside the shelf? He wondered then what else was inside of the shelf. Just why had the mansion stuffed this tiny creature there? Or maybe formed it there, waiting to be captured and brought home. Renathan didn't have a ton of pocketpets, but they were not difficult to feed so he wasn't too worried about it. The mammalian returned to the shelf, left mostly open due to his fearful retreat from the then-unknown menace. He could see the shiny thing again, at the back of the shelf, somewhat hidden by the darkness. He couldn't pull the shelf out any further, however, so he stuck his hand in to retrieve the shiny and see what it was... That was when his hand was nipped. Renathan pulled his hand back, not quite feeling anything painful.

Renathan pulled his hand back and looked at the thing hanging off of it. Another pocketpet, this one furry, had tried to bite and hang on to his finger, only to cutely hang off of it, and not really get past the thick skin of his hand's pads. Renathan chuckled a bit, looking at how fierce it was for it's tiny size. This thing was smaller than his jibiji! Renathan felt a bit bad that these creatures were not generally considered smart enough to train, he would have loved to have trained some of these himself. Renathan put this one in his backpack too, amused by the fact that the two that were already in there were cuddling for whatever reason. It wasn't cold in here to him, but then again, these creatures were a lot smaller than he was. Renathan watched Shy Guy sniff the backpack warily, but the creature lost interest in them, instead checking in the drawer for the shiny thing Renathan and he had seen earlier.

Renathan also reached down into the shelf himself, finally hoping to reach that shiny prize... Soon enough, he was able to grab whatever it was; and it was round! Renathan was really hoping for a bell, and he was really thinking he'd found one this time! This would make for four bells, and he'd only have to hope for two more. He really hoped that this was one. He finally pulls it forth from it's hiding place in the shelf, and it was indeed a bell! A silver one. Interestingly enough, he had not seen a bronze bell this year; he felt like he had seen them last year, some where at least. Renathan held it up for Shy Guy to see, since the stallion had been quite interested in it previously. "See boyo, look what we found for our troubles!" They had, after all, 'fought' two valiant beasts to get to the bell, totally. At least that was what Renathan jokingly thought in his head.

Renathan knew that they had to get a move on, or they would never be able to really do any figuring out of the mansion. Renathan wasn't sure if he was going to be able to come back this month for long, and he had so much training to do... He knew that as soon as he got his first three creatures completely trained that he was going to have to work on yet another set of training. He had so much to do, so many creatures to train. He was going to try to get as much done this month as possible, because he knew that next month his commissions would pick up again; and he'd be working with metal more than anything else. Renathan quickly checked a few more drawers, with Shy Guy standing protectively over his shoulder. It would be obnoxious if Renathan hadn't really expected it already.

The rest of the drawers seemed to not have much in them; a dusty moth eaten tome here, and a half burned candlestick there. Renathan didn't really know what to think about it. He glanced around to see if there was anything else different here, but he wasn't sure what to think about that either. During the first month of the pethian year, he had seen some kind of strange creature here... He was hoping not to run into another one. He didn't know how to work with most mansion creatures, just like mines creatures, and he was more looking for stuff now than companions. That and Shy Guy didn't really get along with other creatures very well most of the time. He'd have to train the stallion out of that. He behaved whenever Renathan was around, and didn't always stay on the best behavior when Renathan wasn't around. That wasn't good at all.

Renathan gave Shy Guy a sideways look that he knew wouldn't translate over, but really; the creature could be obnoxious sometimes. He'd had to bandage up one of his crossbreed's butt a while back because Shy Guy had decided to nip him through the fence that separated their enclosures. Needless to say, Renathan had moved the enclosures. Renathan didn't trust Shy Guy enough to keep him around non-related equillion or any other creatures regardless. He'd have to work on socializing the acid-drooling beast better in the future. For now, though, he just hoped that the mansion would steer its creatures clear of them for a while. Renathan found himself another set of drawers to dig through, and he moved on over there quietly, hoping to find a few more shinies to bring home. He almost wished he'd looked for something to bring home whenever he and Lisle had been here. So far, the trips had been a little barren when compared to normal.

Renathan stood still for a moment, suddenly feeling like he had forgotten something important, but not really knowing or understanding what it was. He turned for a second towards Shy Guy, his mouth open beneath the mask as if to ask a question, but the stallion was standing a good three feet from where Renathan had remembered him being just a split second ago. He stood awkwardly, his mouth wide open for a moment. He tilted his head and swallowed, finally closing his mouth. What had just happened? Renathan hoped he hadn't lost very long, or maybe he was just... No. Shy Guy seemed concerned. Renathan reached out for a moment and petted him, then glanced outside. By the sun's light, it couldn't have been more than a few minutes or something of that nature. He should be fine. Renathan glanced down for a minute, and then decided that this might be some kind of a warning sign. Maybe something was coming...

Renathan decided that he and Shy Guy needed to finish looking around as soon as possible, just in case. He wasn't sure why he felt so funny all of a sudden. However, this didn't happen often, and he just figured that it had to do with perhaps his weak mental defenses, or perhaps his danger sensing capabilities. Renathan had no idea, but he knew himself quite well enough to know that this could just be some odd quirk, one of the things that his people just had to deal with when living in Pethia... Not that there had been anyone from his people to come here other than him. He was the first documented at least. Renathan had not thought too hard about it when he decided to come to Pethia. Renathan started thinking about other things as he walked Shy Guy over to the next set of things Renathan wanted to check; a smaller chest this time around.

Renathan went to open the chest, but found it stuck shut. He glanced up at Shy Guy, curiously, and then back down at the wooden chest. He looked for a lock somewhere, and found none. Then he searched around closely, trying to find some kind of hang up or other such issues that could be keeping it from opening. Renathan then quietly decided that he'd give up on that; there was nothing going on there to make it stay shut. Renathan gently knocked on it, rapping with his knuckles. After a moment or two, in which Shy Guy stared at him intently, Renathan went to stand up. However, he was rewarded with a small 'snick' noise as something inside of the chest unlocks, allowing it to be opened. Renathan bent back down, and carefully opened the box. He was cautious as he did so, and was surprised to find a velvet-lined, but empty box.

Renathan disappointingly placed his hand inside the box, feeling around cautiously. He was just sure something was going to try to come out and bite him or something. Sadly, he was not able to find anything. Renathan was about to leave the box and check out another area, but he instead, he realized that there was an extra hollowness in the box. He accidentally rapped his knuckles across the bottom of the box, and then did it again curiously. Even Shy Guy moved his head forward, almost resting his chin on Renathan's shoulder as he stared. Renathan carefully tried to open what he figured was a false bottom in the wooden chest that was filled with some sort of velvety liner. He did now want to mess up the box, but he did indeed want to see what was in there, if at all possible. He takes a moment to pat Shy Guy's muzzle, since he was so curious.

"Yes Shy Guy, we're going to figure this one out, right..." The mammalian muttered quietly, curiously. He wasn't too sure what to expect here though. Finally, he felt able to pull the false floor in the wooden chest out, it was like he found a small dip in the floor that felt like he wouldn't mess up the velvet this way perhaps. Renathan was quiet for a moment, and then he curiously pulled it up gently looking down very intently... That was then he revealed it; another empty container. Renathan sat there for a moment, and then busted out laughing; much to the shock of Shy Guy, who had been watching him intently. Shy Guy stepped back a bit, allowing Renathan to stand up; because laughing bent over hurt quite a bit. Renathan was finally standing there, with his arms behind his head, giggling sheepishly. Yeah, he didn't know what to make of this.

Renathan patted Shy Guy to calm him after realizing that the creature was quite unnerved by his uncharacteristic outburst. After calming him down very well, Renathan decided that the Mansion was probably letting him know that he was being entirely too greedy or something, and maybe that he should slow down. Renathan didn't know if he was going to be able to come here again this month, since there was so much to work on... After all, Lisle was going to be fully grown soon; he was growing so darn fast! It was almost both surprising and anxiety inducing. Renathan looked back down into the box anyway, to humor himself, and kept searching for some other trick within it, as if he had managed to somehow miss something, not that it made sense. He felt like the floor of the box was flush with the actual floor quite well now, so it wouldn't make much sense if anything else was left in there.
