Jutting out of the grass and leaves, a super spooky... twig.

Auburn was chipper today, despite the rather strange way that the mansion was seeming today. It sent a little shiver down Renathan's spine. He never really felt good when it started getting cold in the year. Honestly, Renathan had never lived anywhere other than the labs that actually got 'cold'. It was a new thing that he had experienced since coming here. Just two years ago, he had seen his first snow. It was amazing, he'd never seen anything like it before in his life! However, he was quite happy to see it, and though he knew that people tended not to do much of anything during the winter months, Renathan couldn't help but be excited about seeing it again this winter. Even though he hated being cold. His fur just wasn't thick enough for cool air, and keeping the heat in winter. He was glad that Auburn's was, though!

Even now, Renathan was shuddering in the slightly cool wind whistling past. However, Auburn was fluffed up and seemed pretty happy to have the slight 'air-conditioning'. She hadn't done very well during the summer, and Renathan had to keep her indoors for most of it. He'd managed to take her out during night time or in the evening, but during the day he kept her indoors. That was important, he wouldn't want Auburn to suffer heatstroke just for him! Still, he was glad to be able to be here with her today, even if nothing of note really happened. Heck, no news was good news, most days! Renathan did not mind a bit. He really just wanted to have some extra time with her today to get ready for a future training exercise. Renathan had done this so often that he wasn't really even thinking twice about it. It was easy for Renathan to be around her, at least.

Renathan always felt a little bad that he had sort of enlisted Auburn without her consent to be a familiar. He hadn't known what he was doing when he did it of course, it was just an accident, but now she was stuck with him. She had to be around him at all times, and it sucked for her, he was sure. At least until she had gotten used to him, anyway. However, Renathan was glad that she was around. She was happy, she loved to sing, and she loved him quite a bit. It was just easy to be around Auburn, because all of this rubbed off on him quite a bit. Her light personality really helped him when he felt the worst, and Renathan could never really thank her enough for that. Of course, she was indeed an animal in intelligence and selfhood, so she'd never really understand anyway.

Renathan sighed, standing atop that first nice little hillock beyond the cast iron gate. The mansion was always a particularly fey feeling place, and Renathan thoroughly believed that it held a ley within it, or perhaps beneath it. Actually, yeah, definitely beneath it. Renathan had always felt such, but of course no one else in Pethia even knew about the Ley. HECK, Pethia didn't seem to have any Ley that Renathan could feel, anyway. That couldn't just be only in his homeland, right? Surely not, Renathan thought. As he was thinking, and breathing in deeply the nice clear arid air of the night, Renathan heard a soft trilling noise. The mammalian was quiet for a bit, but reached up to pat Auburn anyway. "What is it, gal? Anything interesting?" Renathan asked, smiling beneath his mask and turning slightly to look at her. Just as fluffy as ever, she was.

It took Renathan, even with his connection to the izer, to realize that she was puffed up and looking at something with mixed fear and anger across the way. It looked like her silvery eyes were affixed far off. Renathan's brow furrowed, and he tried to follow her gaze. He couldn't see anything at first, just the wind waving the clawed branches of the trees around, and of course the strange soft dirt that looked freshly dug with lots of stones beyond that. It took him a while to actually look AT the mansion, which looked like a rather spooky house in all honesty right now. What did they call those, a haunted mansion? Some kind of story from around here that was told around this time of year. However, Renathan could just barely see the mansion kind of... Move? He blinked, thought about rubbing his eyes, and suddenly, it went back to normal. What was that?

Renathan wasn't sure if they were going to be here for a long time this month, but he figured they might as well figure out what was going on. He wasn't going to go into the mansion, but he wanted to get a closer look at that weird thing that he thought he saw a bit ago. Now Renathan had a ton of past experience with the mansion, including during this month, and most of it was pretty dang bad all things considered. Sure, he found a lot of neat stuff all the time, but he also got chased by monsters, attacked by... Things, and other stuff. Renathan had plenty of reasons never to come here again, but he was always drawn back to look for that Ley. In his homeland, this would certainly be a place of communion with spirits... Auburn makes a scary, angry noise at the mansion again.

Renathan was brought out of his mental reverie long enough to blink a tad, and then squint through his mask, wondering what she was seeing that he wasn't. Renathan was a little bad at protecting his mind since he was so 'open minded' so to speak, but Auburn was not nearly as weak as he was to psychic-like influences. For whatever reason, the mansion tended to mess with Renathan a bit more than other folks would probably have it, at least mentally. It made his understanding of what was real and what was not very difficult to grasp, for himself anyway. He probably seemed pretty odd to anyone else that was out here, well, if Renathan ever saw anyone out here. He used to see more people out here than he did now, to be honest. Renathan can't, however, figure out what it is that his silvery-eyed friend was actually detecting.

Owl-Eyed Auburn wasn't really giving Renathan any pointers either, at least not verbally, and that made Renathan sigh and pet her gently, trying to smooth her feathers and fur mix down a bit. "Good gal, very good. You'll be fine, we'll be fine. We're gonna get closer if that's okay with you, alright?" Renathan was speaking smoothly and softly to her, and that did make Auburn feel a little more calm, but she was still very on guard. Renathan was okay with that, honestly it was more safe for both of them if they both kept on guard but weren't too scared or anything like that. "Alrighty, let's go." He said, smooth and soft voice again. She let out a big breath, and then cuddled into his neck before looking out over the area again, ready for anything from what Renathan could feel from her. He was glad for that!

Renathan steeled himself, looked out one more time at the mansion, realizing that the thing was indeed very calm looking. A wind went by, and everything seemed to flutter. A crow, perhaps fat from the corn of the previous month, flew over to the left and away from the area. The mammalian felt the wind flow over his short fur, and it felt nice. Honestly, he really liked these chilly winds, even if they made him shudder. They would keep him alert since they were not overly cool, nor too warm. It would hopefully serve to keep his head clear and make it to where he could drag himself out of any kind of weird stupor that the mansion might put him in. Renathan remembered a year ago, when he and Shy Guy had a bad time during the dream month. At that, he shuddered. No, today wouldn't be like this, not with Auburn at his side!

Auburn was a little bigger now that she was an Izer, and it made her a little stronger too, if only a tad. She was puffed up on his shoulder, holding onto it a little too strongly and giving him light scratches. She was trying to look scary. The mammalian could hear her as he started to descend down that first hillock, clacking her beak as they went along. It sort of hurt his ears, but he had to keep alert. "Hey sweets, can you please stop clacking?" He murmured, and though she didn't understand exactly what he was saying, she felt it viscerally, in the way that loyalty tended to inspire. She quieted down, but puffed up even larger. "It'll be fine, I promise." He continued, but it hardly inspired any amount of confidence from her. She looked like a cat, back all arched, and it was kinda funny.

Renathan was easily beginning to understand what Auburn was freaking out about as he started getting down the first hillock. The lights were flickering in the different rooms of the mansion, and there was no way that it was normal for the thing to be doing that! "Huh Auburn, I don't know why it would be doing that, at least." Renathan was keeping his voice pretty calm, but now that he was down the first hillock and in the increased shade of the next (wasn't this where the water had been running when he went with Shy Guy that time? Renathan was figuring that it was the case at least...) he felt a lot colder than he had before. Still, this hillock obscured the mansion entirely at the very least. Renathan felt more nervous about that than better, of course. This could change any number of things on their way across the crunchy lawn.

Renathan may still not be sure how long they were going to stay this month, but he was sure that the pair of them were going to trek out to the mansion and then back. There was, of course, a very good reason why Renathan had never once been in the actual mansion and deeper than the very first room. For one, Renathan was sure that the mansion had some kind of a hold over him that was more powerful than on other people. The biggest part of that was that Renathan was indeed weak to psychic influence. Renathan could remember taking Auburn back and out to the mansion during last winter. Winter was already fast approaching, and he hoped to actually be able to use the bells this upcoming december that he had collected last december. That would be nice! Auburn clenched onto Renathan's shoulder a bit harder, forcing out a little 'ow' from him.
