[3] (Roll count continued from the two (2) posts on tapatalk garden.)
Really, Nerius had been planning his (no longer so) newly acquired garden plot sooner, but apparently he wasn't as recovered as he thought he was, and his last mining trip had left him rather drained. Worth it if you asked him, but it had delayed his gardening plans. Actually reaching the garden was delaying his gardening plans too, even the path to it was overgrown, and at this point he wouldn't be surprised if he ran into an overgrown Nyssa.
He'd just finished that thought when something in the bushes moved. But it wasn't a Nyssa, for one thing it was much too small, and a second later a leafscatter scurried out of the bush, visible only for a few moments before disappearing back into some overgrown grass. That was one of the critters that had come with the plot, which meant he'd either arrived, or it had escaped. Or both, he realized, spotting the gate, which was mostly covered in vines, and falling halfway off the hinges, leaving a gap just big enough for the leafscatter to fit.

It looked like a little detour would be needed before he could actually get around to working on the garden itself. That leafscatter needed to be found before it was gone for good, and it would be a good idea to check to make sure all the creatures that were supposed to be there, were. But first, the leafscatter, which had been named Russet, if he remembered correctly. Hopefully it wouldn't be too scared of people, who knew how long it had been since anyone had actually interacted with it.
At least it didn't bolt again, as Nerius walked over to the grass it had disappeared into. He knelt down in front of the grass, better to not loom over the little critter quite as much, and carefully pushed aside blades of grass, looking for the leafscatter. Grass.. grass.. grass.. oh! A pair of pink eyes stared back at him, resembling a galabex in a spotlight. He was clearly startled, but, at least not running away.

Nerius didn't dare move to suddenly, for worry of actually scaring the leafscatter into running off. But after a few seconds the startled look faded, replaced by a more curious one. That was a good sign, and maybe he could further convince the critter he was friendly with a treat? While garden pellets did not sound appetizing to him, they were designed to be used with plant creatures as well as more traditional plants.
Slowly, as to not startle him, Nerius took out a few of the pellets, the good ones, and carefully offered one to the leafscatter. Russet drew back a little at the movement, before relaxing a little, and sniffed with interest at the pellet. "Come on, it's tasty," Nerius spoke softly, trying not to scare the critter. Weather or not his words helped, after a few moments the leafscatter hesitantly took the pellet from his hand, and nibbled on the treat, reminding Nerius of the way a mouse or squirrel would eat.

So far so good, and when the leafscatter finished the pellet, Nerius offered him another. This time, the creature was less hesitant when taking the treat. After a few more pellets, Nerius was able to coax Russet into climbing onto his arm, lured by more pellet treats. He was surprised how friendly the creature was, perhaps the previous owner had spent more time in the garden than he had expected. Either way, it worked out, and it meant he didn't have to scare the leafscatter by grabbing it.
After giving him another treat, Nerius slowly stood up, careful to keep the leafscatter from slipping off his arm or spooking. Russet wasn't terribly thrilled about the movement, but at least he didn't try to jump off. If he scurried off after they were actually in the garden, it wouldn't be an issue, but if he ran off now, Nerius wasn't sure he'd be able to find the leafscatter again. It had been pure luck to spot him the first time.

Nerius walked over to the gate, Russet had stayed put so far, but now would be the tricky part, actually opening the ratty old gate without startling the leafscatter. With one arm holding the critter, it left only one other limb to open the gate, which was easier said than done, given it was falling off its hinges. Would it even swing open, or would he have to try to lift or drag it? Only one way to find out.
It wasn't latched properly, at least, which wasn't a good thing really, but it made his job easier. Lifting the gate with one arm so it was level, which wasn't the easiest thing with his lack of physical strength, Nerius was able to open the gate. It swung well enough, but screeched horribly, scaring the leafscatter into scampering up his arm, where it then hid in his hair. Well, at least he didn't jump off.

The sound probably scared off anything else in the garden too, but at least that would keep them from sneaking out while Nerius set the gate up properly. He didn't have the tools, or expertise, to fix up the gate properly, so the best he'd be able to do was prop it up so none of the garden critters could escape. There was a large rock not too far from the gate, that could work.
Nerius reached down to pick up the rock, and Russet took the opportunity to peek out of his hair, then scurry down and off his arm. The leafscatter didn't go far, watching the rest of the gate repair. Which, there wasn't a lot to. Nerius carried the (unpleasantly heavy) rock over to the gate, putting the stone in place before lifting the gate back up and setting it on the rock. It wasn't elegant, and wouldn't keep out smarter trespassers, but at least it would keep the critters in.

Now for what Nerius had actually come here for, investigating, and likely working on, the garden. Okay, definitely working on the garden, because it was, to put it plainly, a massive freaking mess. Weeds had taken over most the ground space, hedges and bushes looked like they hadn't been trimmed in years, patches of the plant life were completely dead, and there was a cluster of.. reeds or something, in the distance. He hadn't been expecting much, but this was still worse than he'd expected.
Russet didn't seem to mind the mess, and scurried up onto a.. was that a stump? Yes, yes it was, and Nerius had no idea how he was going to get rid of it, but for now the leafscatter was happy to perch of there for a better view. It was too much to hope for that the creature would actually help, but at least it would hopefully get Russet more comfortable with him. Though, the leafscatter was already quite friendly.

Ugh, where to start? The mess was almost overwhelming, but, he had to start somewhere. After a bit more study, the weeds, he decided, were the place to start. Clearing things out so he could actually see what was supposed to be growing, and walk around without feeling like he needed a machete, was the place to start. Fortunately, he had thought ahead, and brought some garden tools. There might be some around here... somewhere, but Nerius didn't feel like hunting around for some, probably old and rusted, gardening tools for who knew how long.
His tool of choice looked a bit like a mutant fork, and he'd been a bit skeptical when he'd purchased it. Hopefully it would actually work, and at least had to be better than bare hands, though technically he was wearing gloves. The leafscatter was still watching him, and was interested in the shiny metal that was the gardening tool. Somehow Nerius suspected he hadn't ever seen one before.

So how did this little tool work again? It hadn't come with any more instructions than 'stab it in and pull up the weed'. Which Nerius tried, but only ended up ripping the top off the plant, and leaving the roots. That was not how that was supposed to work, leaving the roots meant it would just regrow another weed. He tried again, this time digging into the dirt a bit to loosen the roots first. That worked better, and he was able to get the majority of the roots out.
Russet curiously drew closer, and picked up one of the discarded plants. For a moment, Nerius thought he might eat it, but he dropped it again without taking a bit. Did leafscatters even eat plants? Pachees did, on occasion, with berries utilized in breedings, but he wasn't sure about these. There didn't seem to be as much information out about plant creatures, compared to the more common Lab adopted species.

Still keeping an eye on the leafscatter, Nerius went back to pulling weeds. He was working his way through a larger patch, when he encountered something else. Mushrooms. A lot of mushrooms, all growing in a cluster. They weren't poisonous, but he didn't know enough about cooking to tell if people ate them or not. Either way, it was a harvest of sorts, so he begun picking the mushrooms.
And it wasn't long before he had a little helper, Russet had watched him for a few moments, before digging up a mushroom, and held it up to Nerius. That was unexpected, but he wasn't complaining. "Uh, thanks little buddy," he accepted the mushroom, and in return gave the leafscatter one of the garden pellets as a treat. It was a behavior he wanted to encourage, and it would sure be convenient to have a plant critter as a garden helper. His TROD could water, but it wasn't programmed for proper gardening.

Nerius had brought an assortment of supplies, in addition to the fancy gardening supplies he'd recently purchased, and a basket for whatever he harvested was one of them. It wasn't the nicest thing, but it was better than the crops getting smushed up in a backpack, and it would work for now. The mushrooms, including the one dug up by the leafscatter, went into the basket. The leafscatter continued to help as well, digging up a couple more mushrooms. He hadn't figured out to put them in the basket, but at least it was something, and between the two of them the fungus was soon all harvested.
Now back to the weeds. Lots and lots of weeds. Then there was the overgrown plants, and the dead patches, and the tree stumps, and wasn't there supposed to be a pond somewhere in here? Nerius hadn't seen one yet, but there was supposed to be a lotine with the plot, and those were semi-aquatic.

Honestly, he was starting to wonder if it would be easier to move the creatures and start an entirely new garden. Nerius had thought a pre-establised one would be easier, but that might be wrong. It wasn't really the best time of year for gardening either, the end of harvest season, going into winter. Even if the winters were mild here (by his standards), it still wasn't an idea time to be trying to set up a garden.
But for now, he'd stick with this plot, and back to digging up weeds it was. And, like with the mushrooms, Nerius found he had a helper. After watching him for a minute or so, Russet was attempting to dig up a weed. The plant was taller than the leafscatter, and who knew if he'd actually dig up the roots properly, but it was the thought that counted, right? He was trying, at least, and after a bit of digging, offered Nerius a plant.
