It would seem that... something... is accompanying your whiptail.

[146] Unnamed Skutirut The whiptail really had been a nuisance this summer, Nerius had needed to replace the entire sprinkler system in his garden. Not because she'd destroyed everything, but because he wanted to get the lines moved underground so this sort of thing didn't happen again. As inconvenient as it was, Jumanji had at least had a reason for it, though a surprising one. She had been building a nest. He'd never known the whiptail to produce offspring before, but this year she had, a single wiggly little wyrmling. It was a very small 'litter', but next year he'd have to give her proper nesting material, and maybe there would be more.
But he wasn't working with the whiptail today, Nerius had recently purchased a trio of plant creatures that were fall seasonals. The branchaeopter and succulent worm had already been introduced to the garden, it was just the skutirut that hadn't been added yet, currently in a small carrier.

It was still rather early in the day, and the weather was clear, if cold, at least by Labs standards. Nerius hadn't even put on a jacket. Besides, the greenhouse was much warmer, which was rather the point. Choosing a small open area, Nerius set down the carrier, and opened it, planning on letting the little plant creature come out to explore on its own.
What he wasn't expecting was for it to shoot out of the carrier like a seeker on the hunt. There was a blur of greenish brown, and the rustle of leaves in the wind as the skutirut raced out, bolting across the clearing, and quickly reaching the wall of the greenhouse. It didn't stop there though, it merely changed direction, shooting across the clearing again.
Nerius just stared, unmoving, unsure how to react to the shockingly fast creature. Were.. were they supposed to be that fast? It hadn't absorbed coffee or something through its roots, had it?

For better or worse, it didn't seem to have a specific direction in mind, and from what Nerius had read, they weren't terribly smart, and couldn't see. But what it lacked in direction, it more than made up for with energy, and after a few circuits, was heading in the direction of the door by sheer chance. That got Nerius out of his stunned stillness, but the skutirut was much faster, and was out the door before he could reach it. It wasn't the door all the way outside, only to the rest of the greenhouse, but now the energetic little creature was zooming through the whole greenhouse unrestrained.
With a curse, Nerius headed after the skutirut, the 'tiktiktik' of its leg structures at least made it easy to follow. And it must have hit a dead end, because now it was racing right back at him. He moved to catch it, but the skutirut sprinted past his legs unhindered.

It was, as the humans put it, going 'nyoom'... right down the hall and into the male pachee room. Nerius followed it, nowhere near as fast as the nyoom-root, and entered the pachee room, careful not to let any of them escape. The skutirut was much spindlier than a pachee, and had managed to squeeze through one of the openings for ventilation.
It was taking full advantage of the larger space as well, zooming around from one side of the room to the other, scampering up and over the decor. The pachees, collectively, did not know how to deal with this strange new interloper. Some of them were hiding, others were staring, Tye Die was doing his best to try to look intimidating by flaring his wings, and Nebula, having spotted Nerius, scurried over to hide behind him. Nerius scooped up the winged pachee, giving him a reassuring pet, but none of this provided a solution on how to deal with nyoom-root.

Eventually it would tire itself out from all this activity, but Nerius had no idea how long that would take, and he'd rather not leave it to terrorize his pachee with it's activity. They were clearly not happy, and the flying ones, other than Tie Dye, had flown to higher perches. The dragon-winged 'chee was still trying to look intimidating, clearly not realizing the skutirut was blind. Nyoom didn't care in the slightest, and didn't seem to even realize the pachees were there. There was irritatingly little information on plant creature senses, at least for the ones that did not have obviously animal like senses.
Nerius was quite sure he wouldn't be able to catch the skutirut by hand, it was simply too fast, and too low to the ground. Maybe with a net? He had one, for fishing, and though he'd rather not leave the skutirut unattended, he could always have the TROD retrieve the net.

Hey - something's dropping off your skutirut!

Nyoom was still zipping around the enclosure with no sign of slowing down, and being unable to see, was heading right for a cluster of pachee. They noticed, and with an unhappy rustle of leaves, dived haphazardly to the sides, diving out of the way of the speedy root. This was getting ridiculous, and Nerius still wasn't sure what to do. He could try to catch it with magic, but he wasn't sure how fragile the skutirut was, and he didn't want to injure it on accident.
Then again, he also didn't want the skutirut to injure itself on accident, it was careening around the room, and Nerius noticed the little creature had already shed a few leaves. Now, it was autumn, and the fallen leaves very well could be natural, but with a brand new creature he couldn't be sure. Nerius didn't want the pachee to eat them, so he picked up the leaves, before he could loose track of them.

That almost caused him to loose track of the skutirut, as it managed to find another ventilation slot, and slip its way out of the pachee room. It was still in the greenhouse, but there wasn't a door on that side. Nerius set down the pachee he was holding, and went around the long way. As he got closer, he could hear the tiktiktik of Nyoom's legs, thankful he hadn't lost track of the speedy creature.
It was scampering along the brick paths between rows of plants, and was easy enough to keep track of as long as it didn't go into the plants. He still wasn't any closer to catching it, but maybe he could herd it into an enclosed area. Best case would be the room he'd released it in, assuming he could get the door shut this time, as there weren't ventilation slots small enough for it to escape.

Unfortunately, it didn't seem to be interested in going in that direction, instead it was scampering up and down the paths. It almost seemed like it was looking for something, but Nerius didn't think the skutirut had the senses or brainpower for that. It sort of reminded him of those off brand scuttle robots that people used to vacuum their house, in that it just sort of bounced around without any clear direction.
It was just, a lot faster, and Nerius was struggling to keep up. If it hadn't been for the enclosed spaces, and lack of sight, he was sure he'd have lost track of Nyoom by now. The skutirut was already much faster than him as it was, or for that matter, any plant creature he'd ever worked with before. Lotine could move swiftly in water, but other than that plant creatures generally weren't the most speedy of creatures.

But the root was making full use of its speed, and was now headed down the path that went to the supply storage room. There was a door, but the vents weren't secured either, and Nyoom was able to scurry right in. That was something he'd need to get fixed, perhaps install some metal mesh. Not just for the skutirut either, if it could get out, that meant other small creatures could get in, and Nerius really didn't want to have to deal with some kind of infestation.
The root was enough, running wildly through the storeroom, springing off a pile of drip saucers, sending them falling all over the place. Ugh, at least it was too small to knock over anything terribly large, or cause too much damage, though even the saucers were enough to harm the creature if one went flying and hit the skutirut, worse would be broken bits of pottery.

It didn't stay long in the storeroom, as by pure chance it managed to find the grate going outside. Nerius swore, glad there was at least a person sized door this time, though it took him a moment to unlatch it. The exterior garden was fenced as well, but with how easily the skutirut was getting though the ventilation grates, he suspected it wouldn't have any trouble slipping through the fence.
It hadn't gone far yet, at least, and was sprinting along the side of the greenhouse. Nerius had to wonder if cluttered spaces helped it navigate by touch or something. So far, it wasn't showing any signs of wanting to leave the edge of the greenhouse, but the garden wasn't an open plain, and Nerius suspected Nyoom would sprint off away from the greenhouse at some point. Magic still felt a little risky to use on it, but at this point he was running out of options.

A tall structure?! The big bug meandered alongside the sturdy foundation, antenna a-wiggle and curisoity in full-swing as it checked out the buildings sides. Up, down, around the corner- what a strange thing! So unlike a plant! It certainly didn't smell edible, though the translucent nature of it hinted at a chance of plants growing on the inside... Perhaps, if it just kept walking around towards the other-side, there would be a clear way into the tasty, vegetative-filled area...

[156] Juniper Nerius hadn't really been intending for it to be a garden day, but when he'd gone downstairs for breakfast, Juniper had been right at the window, staring at him through the glass as if waiting for him to arrive. While the garden was on his property, it was fenced off, and he wasn't sure how the evergreen had managed to get out. She also was rather agitated, which made him think something had to have happened. She didn't look injured, though he'd want to check the evergreen over more closely later, ideally once he knew what had happened. Still, it seemed like nothing horribly urgent had happened, and Nerius had gotten properly dressed, and grabbed a muffin before heading out into the grounds. Evergreens were one of the more intelliegent garden creatures, other than lotine and lola, and unlike those he'd actually built up a relationship with Juniper, enough that she would seek him out for help.
