[Several weeks ago - Renathan used 'Sever Bond']
Renathan was not sure if he even deserved to stop hating himself yet.
The mammalian had healed quickly. He always did. He'd caught some kind of cold for a couple of days, forcing him to stay in bed and ache with fever when he wasn't performing necessary functions on his property, but it went away as quickly as it had come. He had been more worried about Lisle, the tiny chocolate colored chiryma chick. He blamed himself constantly, couldn't really push it from his mind... He hadn't meant for it to get hurt. Renathan knew he could have done a million things differently, and all of them would have kept it from occurring altogether. The mammalian didn't even limp from the ordeal, the healer had been able to work on him very well. His leg hardly even had thin little scars on the calf of it. However, Lisle did not get out of it so luckily at all.
It was all his fault.

Renathan knew from past experience that continuously focusing on negative aspects of life was not healthy; and that 'beating oneself up' over something was probably the worst thing that could be done in times of difficulty. However, Renathan could not do anything in this situation to fix it, and it felt like a vice grip in his chest. He was a fixer at heart, he loved to provide good homes for abused creatures, enjoyed spending time researching to make sure that he could take the best care of them possible... It meant a lot to him. However, the tiny jibiji had been able to be healed, but according to the vet; birds did not do well with past breakages. Apparently, the chiryma had broken it's left hind leg, as well as accrued a nasty cut. Because he had tried to heal it himself first, the poor creature now had an awful, roping scar that was obviously itchy as well.

The tiny bird had taken two days to even fully and lucidly wake up after the ordeal, and then he had immediately began crying about his leg being bound up; if one could call the strange bird noise that. Then the creature had began pulling out his own feathers in distress to get at the itchy newly formed roping scar across the leg. Renathan had just about panicked about this; and now the tiny fluffy creature was wearing what had to be the saddest, flimsiest cone of shame he had ever seen in his life. Bird necks are very thin and sensitive, because of that a full cone of shame was out of the question. It kept the miserable bird from tearing out all of its downy fluff, and from scratching the ropey scar on the healing leg. Renathan felt terrible watching it, but could hardly pull himself away. He was worried, and there was nothing he could do but wait.

The days went by slowly. Every few days or so, he'd bring the tiny creature to the creature healer as carefully as he could for the checkups on the healing leg. After a few of these checkups, Renathan finally felt himself growing a little more at ease and less panicked. The situation still made him feel awful, he'd been the absolute worst creature tamer with this chiryma, and he even felt a bit bad to have the comforting companionship of his beloved jibiji, Auburn. She seemed to understand, and quietly became a sweet motherlike figure to the chiryma that was about her size. The chiryma was a proud and arrogant creature, snapping at her with his beak at first. Soon, the two were fast friends. Renathan felt guilty just looking at them. He'd endangered all of them, and he was lucky that they were all at least somewhat fine. If one could call the chiryma's injury that.

Renathan was devastated. He stood out in the sunlight of the cold winter morning, feeling a small amount of warmth from the sun itself but that was it. He held the baby chiryma close to him, keeping it warm from the frigid nipping air. This was the last of the checkups that Lisle would be scheduled for, and the tiny creature had the cone and leg splint removed, which should have granted it full movement. However, what he had been told today was horrible for him; the creature may not ever have full movement of the limb again. Renathan would have felt bad about that anyway; but the fact that the creature was a bird; a two-legged walker, Renathan knew that he'd never walk well, never have full mobility in any way. Chiryma also did not fly; so there was nothing to really make up for the issue either. It was all his fault; if he hadn't taken a baby creature to the mines... This would never have happened.

Renathan decided almost immediately upon getting him that he was going to try to, a little at a time, get the creature to try to move itself a bit at a time. He had an entire packet explain how best to try to rehabilitate the creature, and Renathan would certainly follow it. He felt like he had to, like it was his duty. He'd done this, it was his fault. He felt like his issue was that he had underestimated the tiny creature's loyalty. He knew that domestic v2 chiryma typically didn't survive well without humans, and because of that he had assumed that the creature would have stayed where he had put it instead of [idiotically... bravely...] leap onto the face of an attacking creature. He hadn't thought that chiryma were both notoriously loyal and brave, as they were, nor that they were also predators. He'd known that they were meat eaters; but hadn't thought about their predatorial, less fearful, nature.

Renathan buried himself in his research one day, working out how to best rehabilitate the young chiryma, and more about chiryma habits and mental fitness. They were pack animals, he realized; and powerful as adults. Mounts even. He had been told that, but looking at the diagram nearly shocked him; they got very large! They actually had tiny arm-like front limbs, which meant that Lisle would not be able to use them to make up for the messed up hind leg, ever. That was not good; but he realized that he had made a grave error by not doing the most research possible before receiving this creature. He should have paid more attention than just the physical needs of the species... Renathan pets the tiny creature after he was done with his research, and then he placed a small amount of jerky a little away from the creature. The chiryma locked eyes onto it, and made a soft cheep.

At first, the creature simply seemed to request the food object to be handed to him, as could be ascertained by it's specific looks and sharp calls, but after a little while, it got the most determined look in it's eyes, a sharp glare behind those bluish orbs. Renathan was pleased to see it kind of hobble a couple of 'steps', if one could call them that at all. Renathan then pushed the little piece of jerky to him slowly, and the tiny determined creature met him halfway with difficulty, looking at him defiantly before snapping the little piece of jerky up. Renathan felt a bit of pride flow into his chest and then immediately make it hard to breathe with a crushing feeling. He felt bad for the pitiful creature that could have died giving him the opening he needed to be able to scare the scary attacker off with his flare.

Well, would have died. Could have died. Perhaps should have died. Renathan tried to push that out of his mind as he stared down at the tiny chiryma that now seemed ever so slightly pleased with itself and the jerky piece it had worked for. Renathan was perhaps humanizing the creature a bit, but it was hard to not humanize something that looked so intelligent in it's eyes. Perhaps it was simply the pack instincts of the creature; that ability to 'think' in a pack structure was a mark of intelligence for most of the animal world, and he'd known that. Renathan let the creature rest, giving it food with protein added. He wanted to make sure that the creature would be strong enough to continue working with movement and regrow those muscles. The next day, they repeated this, and the next, and the next. Finally, Renathan sees a small amount of progress; he could almost have cried had he not actively kept himself from doing so.

The progress was sweet, but the battle had only just began. Renathan wasn't happy now, but he was glad that progress existed at all. Renathan slowly continued to work with the creature. Progress was slow, as was their progression with becoming friendly again. The chiryma was very aloof and distant, sometimes staring pensively out over the room. Sometimes, the creature would stare at him with a nearly aggressive expression, somewhat condescending, which was not something that had occurred before. Renathan was working on setting the jerky farther and farther away, slowly, meal by meal. The creature was beginning to maneuver around, but still had a pronounced difficulty, a limp. Renathan had been hoping that they would be able to eliminate that, but he knew after their time was up that this creature would probably never be able to get around well. He had feared it all along, but now it felt like an inevitability. Renathan did let himself cry that night. For himself and for the critter.

Renathan didn't really know where to start anymore. He continued working with the small creature, but he had no idea where to really go with this. He felt bad about the idea of training the creature because he felt like he'd already put it through enough difficulty. However, he felt bad about shifting his attention to his other creatures as well. It felt like a lose-lose situation and he felt utterly destroyed by it. One day, however, when he was trying to get the creature to go a bit further for the jerky; the creature made it's way over to him, slowly but determinedly, instead. Then, before he could really react, the creature pecked him right on his hand! It hurt, Renathan jerked his hand back a bit, and then looked straight into the creature's eyes. The little antennae on their head were supposed to be very good at picking up 'mental cues' whatever that meant... He could almost feel this, looking into it's eyes.

Renathan glanced at his hand; it was bleeding ever so slightly, but only at a tiny, surface-level abrasion. Renathan glanced down at the creature, and then back at his hand. He had no idea at first why this had happened. Why did the chiryma do this to him? Then, he glanced at the creature in the eyes and saw those proud, angry eyes also displaying a very slight hint of pity. Yes, the creature, feeling pity, about him. Perhaps it could pick up his misery, somewhat? Renathan swallowed, and quickly put a bandage on his hand. He deserved this, but he didn't feel bad about it. In fact, he felt much better for some reason. It wasn't the pain, in fact, he could hardly feel such a scratch... However, he was brought from his thoughts. If the chiryma was being strong about this, then he should as well. He was supposed to be the one in control, after all.

Renathan had more resolve, after this, thankfully. He doubled down on study, and after completing a few commissions, found and hired a veterinarian willing to work with both him and the chiryma to strengthen the creature's leg. Slowly but surely, the creature was gaining strength. The veterinarian had never before worked with a chiryma, but he worked with small and birdlike creatures otherwise, so Renathan felt confident that they would make a breakthrough at some point. He did not, however, expect that the breakthrough would be near as two days later, when the tiny creature stood up to full height- and promptly sat back down. Still, Renathan's excitement was extreme and obviously infectious, the tiny creature seemed to be secretly pleased with itself, but not enough to force itself back up. Good, overdoing itself was far too much for the creature, and he didn't want it to re-injure itself. Renathan was, however, relieved of some of his stress, a bigger chunk than he'd have liked to have admitted.

Renathan was pleased to wake up one morning and see his two birds all cuddled up in the small area where he kept the chiryma. Auburn was like a secondary part of himself, and his affection for both was only paralleled by his affects for Daughter of Wands and Shy Guy. Not that Daughter allowed him to show any affection, and Shy Guy, though a bit more forthcoming, was as prickly as ever. The chiryma was both growing more attached to him and less touchy-feely, and it appeared to be getting larger, with both legs growing at the same rates. Renathan was glad that the tiny creature appeared to be growing both of the legs without issue, save for the fact that his off leg was still very harshly limping. He let the two creatures sleep, they looked pretty comfortable. Auburn made for a very good 'mother bird' for the baby chiryma, even if the chiryma was getting a little larger than her already.
