- Renathan had really, really screwed up this time, and there was no real way of fixing it. Renathan sat under the large red leaves of the full-moon-maple tree in his front yard, holding a lanky and quite frankly sickly looking animal in his hands. It appeared to be some kind of a rabbit; upon closer inspection it could easily be identified as a really, really weird Yumenokei. For one, Renathan appeared to be petting the strange creature, and Yumenokei were generally ethereal creatures; scarcely more than a ghost. The young mammalian was very concerned about the creature, his mask sitting beside him since he was on his own property and away from others; the creases in his snout running deep. Renathan had no idea that this was going to go as poorly as it did, and it made him question his own inability to find information about the creatures he was ordering from the labs. He'd really messed up, and now he was going to have to decide what to do about this colossal mistake. - [Renathan and Dullahan / Renathan used Sever Bond / Renathan and Dullahan on Renathan's Farmland 'Redbud Hovel']

Renathan was deep in thought, his pink eyes staring blankly at a direction through and vaguely above the rather miserable looking creature. The Yumenokei was quiet, as docile as any labs-ordered creature, immediately taking to him like a moth to a flame for comfort. However, whenever Renathan had read the information packet he knew would be found with the delivered creature, for those that need to know things about the creature's species and latent abilities and such, he had found out the most disturbing thing that someone who had been in a few of his previous situations. It turned out that the Yumenokei, and really all Yumenokei, were apparently capable of very complex thought. Renathan tried to avoid ordering creatures that were possibly human-like in intelligence for obvious reasons. While he could certainly break that rule in rare circumstances that required it; in example, Lisle's unique predicament, he just was not comfortable forcing a creature into an existence of servitude when it was capable of thinking. While he wouldn't oppose others working with them, he didn't feel confident making sure that such creatures were given the best life possible. The Yumenokei that he was currently petting gently on the back was certainly no exception to that; but it was even more serious, morally.

Most individuals probably would not have batted an eyelash, and still even more, he knew, would be excited about the prospect of training a sentient creature. However, Renathan had a difficult situation several months ago with a creature deciding that it did not want the difficulty that came with added sentience. A wiurn he'd given a set of items that would allow it to become both sentient and speaking had decided relatively quickly that the burden was too much to deal with, and surprisingly returned the items to him. Ever since then, Renathan had been careful to make sure that he wasn't forcing intelligence on any of his creatures that did not need it absolutely. He carefully picks up one of the yumenokei's ears and gently petted it in the direction of the hair's growth, an attempt of comforting the creature. He had no idea what it thought about any of this, but he did know that it was probably in some kind of pain.

Renathan had requested a Yumenokei without the ethereal quality, and he hadn't really thought about what that could have caused. He tended to think of the Lab process as being some kind of infallible great thing; he had no true knowledge of whatever they used to make creatures, and he was beginning to believe that it might be a good idea to figure that out. Renathan had not realized that a species that was typically ethereal would suffer if not ethereal; he was told that this creature would take twice as long to heal if harmed, and Yumenokei already are quite fragile. He felt terrible for that; an intelligent creature, and it was probably in some kind of pain? He wasn't sure what to do about this at all, but he did know that it was horrible. Renathan had an idea, but he didn't know if it would do any more harm, and he was hesitant. Renathan held a very pretty RoT in his other hand. This should allow him to get a better idea of what was going on in the Yumenokei's head.

Renathan stretches his legs out and sits down on his hind end on a root that was laid across the ground. He casts his gaze over the reddish buds that had been blown off in a storm the other day, now collected in the gnarled roots and scattered across the grass. Renathan glanced across the deep green grass and sighed. He takes the ribbon of telepathy, and stares for a while into the deep starry fabric. He had been saving this one for a good long while, for a situation that required an RoT. Renathan hardly ever used RoTs to train creatures, and this was certainly a good time as any, he figured. Renathan took the RoT and tied it to the creature's neck ever so gently, making sure to leave a comfortable amount of slack with a snug fit. Then, he cut it carefully, and breathed out. This was a good day, he told himself. Then, he quickly tied the second piece to his left antler, allowing it to dangle almost like a chime would. [5]

Renathan suddenly drew a blank in his mind, not knowing really what to try to 'say', to present across the link, to try to fix this. For one, he had not yet seen the Yumenokei actually walk, run, or even stand on it's own. He had been holding it for the last hour since it had been delivered, after all. Renathan gently picked up the yumenokei, marveling again at it's long lean body, lighter than it looked despite the rather 'tall' size from toe-tips to head when held. Renathan was quiet for a moment, taking in the warmth of the sunlight filtering through the bright crimson and gold leaves. Then, he placed the Yumenokei on the grass gently. For a moment, the creature laid there, but soon, it perked up slightly, moving it's head to look at him, as if it could see through the cloth on it's head. After a moment or two, the creature slowly raised to it's feet, it's legs longer than Renathan had realized.

Renathan was pleased, and wondered vaguely when the creature would realize that the RoT link was there. He couldn't feel anything from the other side, and he wasn't sure what to think about that really. He didn't have a ton of experience with RoT's, but he had quite a bit of experience with other links that he figured were somewhat like it. He didn't want to push this on the other being though; he figured that the Yumenokei would venture the link on its own terms. Renathan took the time to enjoy the really nice spring weather that was currently happening around them. The creature stretched out on the grass, this time on all-fours still, just trying to stretch out it's body. After a moment or two, the thin creature stood up, and looked at the mammalian quietly. After the creature seemed to size Renathan up, the Yumenokei turned away, not giving him any more thought. Instead, the creature looked down at a bright red bud, one of the ones caught in the roots.

Renathan was pleased to watch the Yumenokei first stare at and finally sniff the tiny red buds, nearly flowers. He then appeared to look up; at the crimson leaves, and Renathan could almost tell that the creature was trying to figure out where they had come from. Renathan didn't bother to make any actions at the moment to get the Yumenokei's attention, and instead looked across the yard at one of the many redbud trees on the property that had been lucky enough not to have all of the red buds blown off in the wind. After a moment or two, Renathan glanced back behind him, and realized quite quickly that the Yumenokei seemed to have followed his gaze during that time period; and seemed to be quite interested in the other tree. Renathan waited to see if the creature was going to move over to that tree, but instead Renathan was surprised to watch the Yumenokei seem to move to investigate something else.

Investigate it does; the Yumenokei wanders around the roots, sniffing at bits and bobs. Renathan knew that most ethereal beings did not need to eat; and that somehow Yumenokei tended to eat mochi? He wasn't sure how that worked too well. However, he was suddenly at a loss as to what to feed this non-ethereal Yumenokei. He figured that since Mochi seemed to be made of primarily plant material, that the creature might be able to stomach some kinds of plant matter. He would have to test this out a bit. He really should have thought this over better... Renathan watches as the Yumenokei finally seems to bore of the roots and other various plant materials. The creature sits on a root opposite of Renathan, staring at him intently now. Renathan had been practicedly waiting in the sort of 'middle' of the RoT connection, waiting for the first signs of an interest in communicating for a while now.

Renathan couldn't quite sense it, but he got this strange idea of being looked at from above, somehow. He did not look up, however, at the tree. He figured that this was some kind of idea that he was getting from the RoT; it wasn't like he could see himself or anything, it was more like... Like being observed by an alien or something. He squinted his eyes for a moment, curiously. He had never felt a presence across an RoT like this; of course he was also typically a little weaker in the whole psychic department, but he had never really felt like he was being acutely observed by a pet before. Sure, he'd noticed them watching him when he was directing them... Renathan had never felt such a sense of something being a bit larger than him. His sarane were narrow-minded but clever, often coming up with strange ideas. This was an an entirely different scale. It was almost as if the Yumenokei was trying to figure out how to use the link most effectively.

After a moment or two, Renathan 'reached out' and attempted to transmit an idea. <Greetings.> He was careful to make sure that the message was not necessarily in his native tongue. He watched the Yumenokei's face for a moment, trying to figure out what he was seeing there. There was hardly any change. However, he realized that the creature had changed it's stance somewhat. What that meant, he was not sure. Finally, Renathan sensed a thought that seemed somewhat terrifying at first. {Curious, yet moreso.} Renathan blinked in a bit of shock, his pupils constricted a bit. He hadn't expected to be... Kind of ignored? He steeled himself, and asked. <What is curious?> He asked, the strangeness of the link perhaps making this endeavor a bit difficult. After a moment of perhaps consideration, the Yumenokei answered back. {I did not know if you could communicate.} That was quite simple, Renathan figured. He choked back a bit of a laugh at that.

The Yumenokei was now watching him curiously, as if trying to discern what exactly he was to expect from all of this. After a moment, the creature gives him another communication point. {I am new, am I not?} The Yumenokei glanced over himself it seemed. {I don't have a lot of memories.} The way it was pushed across the link was succinct and matter-of-fact. Renathan didn't have time to answer before the Yumenokei continued. {What are you?} Renathan noticed that there seemed to be a distinction between the 'what' and 'who' idea there, meaning that the creature was not quiet deigning him with intelligence, himself. That was probably to be expected. <I am... Well, it is complicated.> He wasn't sure where to begin. The Yumenokei seemed to grow just a small amount impatient. {I am hungry.} He seemed to almost 'mutter', if that made any sense. <I will find food for you, and explain as we eat.> Renathan sent over, quickly.

Renathan stood up, and then went to pick up the Yumenokei before stalling himself for a moment. <Can I pick you up?> He asked, quietly. He normally would just scoop a critter up, but he didn't want to insult an intelligent being too much. The creature seemed to consider this for a moment. {Sure, you did before.} Renathan bent low and scooped the Yumenokei up, holding it with all of it's feet supported, like he did most of his smaller critters. This one was pretty large for a creature to be held like that, but it was very light for the size. The creature did not say anything further for the duration of the walk, Renathan's paws denting the dewy grass that had just gotten good and green that year. Renathan soon makes his way to the kitchen, having carefully made sure to wipe his feet on the welcome matt to avoid getting grass everywhere. The yumenokei seems to watch this action with interest.

Renathan was not surprised to see the Yumenokei staring out across the house curiously, taking in the living room. Renathan wondered if the creature wanted to explore, vaguely, but knew that food needed to be the first thing on the list. The Yumenokei had some kind of illness, and he didn't want to exacerbate it, he wasn't sure exactly how hungry the creature was. Receiving creatures from the labs was an interesting experience. Renathan then gently sat the Yumenokei down on a chair in the kitchen, and the Yumenokei took a moment to look around the room from his seat. Renathan had never before seen a creature 'get' the concept of a chair so quickly; most of his creatures tended to move away from them. He figured that it would be inappropriate to put such an intelligent creature on the counter, for fear of making it seem normal. Renathan then began to rummage around in his refrigerator. The Yumenokei watches, curiously, staring in that direction.

Renathan knew that the Yumenokei could probably feel the cold from the refrigerator, so he figured he was about to get a question. He was of course correct in his assumption. {What is the function of that?} The question was a bit confusing in it's 'mental wording', for him. Renathan figured that he could explain decently enough. <This is an appliance, it keeps food cold. That keeps food from spoiling. Going Rotten.> He explains, to the best of his ability while still keeping it simple. The Yumenokei seemed to understand this, though it did seem curious about the inner workings, as Renathan could gather from a string of information that crossed the RoT that didn't make a lot of sense to him after that. Renathan pulls out a package of the pet-safe herbivore mix that he had made for pets like Auburn, that tended to have a plant-based diet. He opens the package and places some in one of his own bowls, siting it down in front of the Yumenokei.
