The heat of the room made it terribly slow-going in the beginning. While the layers of the wall were itself soft enough to easily yield to mallet and chisel, her strokes were gradual, measured, in no rush or overdue zeal. Heat was an old friend to her and hardly could bother more than a mild chill does someone born in the Labs, but the problem was the air - there simply wasn't a good enough flow through these caves and the humidity made it even more thick. A waste of energy was a waste of breath and she had to be careful not to overwork herself to lightheadedness.
As the chips tap-tap-tapped off the wall, Garnea watched them tumble and clatter on the floor, an interest slowly, but surely peaking. For now the safety of the shoulder-bag was paramount, but this was Stone, this was Old Feelings, this was.. Familiar.
Pun intended.
But it was also filled with memories of things she knew to be Dangerous.

The mallet hit a particularly large piece of rock in the wall, dislodging the chunk in a loud crack. Louder still was the tumbling onto the floor where it clattered and skidded along the moist surface as Darky quickly jumped aside, saving her toes from a very probable aching in the near future. Both mammalian and familiar attentions were drawn onto the object, though it was difficult to tell who of the two might have been more startled by the event.
On Darky's side of things, she had assumed the rock was just a larger deposit of calcite, but the weight and size of the piece was different to the surrounding rock.
On Garnea's side of things, the tumbling rock came skittering right towards the bag she was in, and the wyrm's posture bristled, letting out a clattering equivalent to an animal hissing - a warning for this intrusive thing to Keep Its Distance Or Else.
To both their credit, the rock did indeed stop short of the bag, lodged on a little pebble, rather than go tumbling down the slope into darkness.

A few seconds of absolute silence followed (after the ten or so seconds it took for the echoes to die off at the further end of the cave, that is), before the sphinx approached the bag and tried to soothe the defensive familiar with a "Shh, its alright, Garnea. Its just a rock, it wont hurt you."
'Cant' was the more traditional word in that phrase, but the mammalian really wasn't sure what the wyrm had endure down here prior to her taming. For all she knew (and she strongly suspected), that wasn't at all true.
The wyrm gradually settled down, more due to the fact the stone wasn't moving than the mammalian speaking to her, and only twitching some again when the sphinx picked up the lump to examine. It was calcite alright, but lightly tossing it in her palms was.. weird. It was heavier, rosier.. Something just beneath the initial layers barely shining through.
Darky squinted, then went for the multi-tool.

It was an odd city-contraption, but a useful one, the mammalian had found. Someone took a pocket knife and then added three more knives to it, seemed to think that still wasn't enough, so added an entire armory of tools on top of that. For now she just flicked out a simple blade and began to scrape at the lump.
The scratching noises peaked the familiar's interest, who rose from the bag like enchanted red rock rope, trying to crane her head as high as possible to see what the sphinx was doing. It sounded like most things eating rocks, the scraping and crunching, but the pieces were falling down and the soft-skin wasn't consuming it.
The effort paid off. Beneath a couple of the calcite layers the sphinx could see something bright pink with dark veins, the unmistakable colouration of a rhodonite. Some ten minutes of further scraping and scratching later she had managed to clean the rock as best as she could without putting it through a tumbler, so she set it into the bag's pocket for safe keeping.

As far as Garnea seemed to be able to tell, one rock wasn't much different to another rock (mainly because she liked Very Specific Rocks and that Wasn't It). But when the sphinx put the rhodonite away and rose to return to the wall, a restlessness grew - what if there was Specific Rocks.. And the soft-skin was basically doing what she did, but bigger.
Gradually, the familiar began to slink out of the bag, slithering forwards towards the cracked wall. She didn't quite know what to do about it, but where the train of thought took time to get going in wyrm minds, once they did, they didn't really have any brakes.
Returning to the chisel and mallet method, the sphinx continued to slowly hack at the calcite, though this time around she made sure to keep an eye out for anything that could look like a larger cluster or deposit. The chances of stones having once been stuck between the cracks and then covered in calcite were high, or, perhaps they already became covered in the streams of once old before lodging, like reverse pearls?

A beautiful black-crackled green stone could be located somewhere in the general vicinity quite close to the area of inspection; perhaps stuck within a calcite crack? [11-15]

Rock, rock, rock, so far all normal regular rock. The sphinx made sure to hold some of the pieces against the crystal torch, screening the cores of them for any potential darker shadows within the yellowism milk of the calcite, but to no luck. The pieces screened were discarded behind her, where the familiar slowly and steadily creeped closer. Specific Rock it still wasn't, at least to her senses, but one could never be too sure and a wyrm wasn't one to easily second-guess themselves. Shifting a tail extended to scooch one of the rock pieces closer to her, drawn into a serpentine coil as hollow eyes loomed over it, almost.. hungry.
Another piece lodged from the wall revealed some sort of seam just beneath that layers, running darker and more rougher than the rest. Darky leaned in, clearing out the area with a brush, chipping the calcite some more to broaden the gap and then reached in to run her hand across the surface.
Huh.. now that, was different.

The darker stone was unmistakably more akin to sturdy granite, than the soft calcite, and certainly the sphinx hadn't assumed the entire cavern to be but one frail latticework of sediment stone, but the fact the calcite layer was mere inches thick suggested this cavern's humidity problem was a lot more recent than she had anticipated. Perhaps a few year or so? At least, given the amount of water vapour hovering around and occasionally dripping down the walls.
This also meant the deeper part of the walls were more likely cracked in a similar fashion to the fissure she'd unearthed. A temperature change this severe and this recent would have likely caused stresses in the tunnel construction.
Not unlike the stresses in the loose rock piece's structure, caused by the wyrm biting down on it with her beak. The stone was soft and crumbled easily, becoming flaky dust as it did and leaving Garnea with a specific sense of dissatisfaction. Usually rocks resisted a lot more and she had to work for the food.

The wyrm stared down the small calcite flakes for a few minutes longer before the inevitable freighter train of thought kicked back in. This rock wasn't good, strong rock, therefore, not the Food Rock. One of the other rocks that look, sound and feel absolutely the same, however, could be..
Blissfully unaware of Garnea's philosophical enlightenments, the sphinx focused on the fissure, now using the chisel as almost a gouging tool, scraping the pooled and solidified calcite out of there. While the granite did have a roughness to it, it wasn't jagged, like its type was generally to be. That suggested weathering, and weathering in a damp cave coupled with up-down fissures suggested old flow lines. And, where water flowed, currents usually brought along--
Aha!
The chisel had chipped free something darker and much more greener than the more reddish granite, though in the darkness of the Mines, sometimes one dark shade of colour was the same as another.

Getting the greenish rock loose took a fair amount of jiggling with the chisel, carefully carving out the surrounding soft stone as to not damage the piece. Until she knew what kind of gemstone she was dealing with it was best to be cautious - after all, the softer stones could be chipped and cracked as easy as the calcite that encased them. Even the most precious stones could then lose their worth and use, if cracked right down the middle, making them far too small to properly work with.
The stone free, she took a step back to examine it in proper light. At first she suspected it to be something related to marble, but the dark veins and spotting quickly pointed towards the more likely conclusion of 'serpentine'. Not a tough stone, but, pretty enough if set right.
In the meantime, just near her feet, the wyrm had wormed her way to another set of broken off rocks, shifting her way between them, refined senses gauging the tasteless from the tasteful.

A sudden clatter made the sphinx almost jump, flinching back and whipping around to stare at the darkness of the cave's far corner. Clack-clack-clatter.. Her gaze shifted downwards and spotted a faint pale round piece rush into the darkness along the cave's slope. Directly in the source of the rock's journey was Garnea, hollow eyes staring back up at her completely unaware at anything being the matter. Darky breathed out, relaxed and ran a hand across her face, "For someone who can't seem to stay still, you sure know how to sneak up on others.."
The wyrm's head merely tilted a little, before her attention (and beak) returned to trying to gnaw apart the calcite pieces, each one softly turning into piles of flakes, much to the familiar's disappointment. Darky leaned herself up against the rock wall, smirking but likewise wondering if a piece of granite might keep her busy for longer (and potentially out of any more trouble). As for the serpentine, a little chisel-work to sort out the sides, some brushing to clean it up and it looked to be right as rain for processing.

Nearby, there were two more minerals to be found; one a neat specimen of lava-rock, the other... Was that gold? An experienced miner would be able to see that it was not. [16-20]

Shuffling her way around the familiar and to the bags, the sphinx carefully put away the little stone into a felt-lined pouch, before returning to her work. It wasn't entirely long after that when another noise entered her attention span, one of a solid and loud "crunch". Turning around and glancing down, she watched the wyrm wrestled with a calcite piece that seemed to give her more trouble than any of the previous ones combined.
Craning a brow, but curiosity peaked, the sphinx knelt down and carefully unraveled the feverishly rock-gnawing Garnea from her quarry. The calcite had yielded itself with no issues, but it revealed something much darker and porous underneath. That one the wyrm's beak was having trouble with, but at the same time, she had managed to leave a fair amount of pock marks on its surface.
The stone itself was fairly inexpensive, a lavarock most commonly known as a washing tool for calloused feet. As of yet she had never seen anyone use it for true jewellery, but it didn't hurt to keep them around in case that changed.

"Easy now," she tried to soothe the irritated wyrm, who seemed intend on breaking this stone into as many small pieces as possible, "This isn't quite your normal fair of food." A smile and a shake of the head, before an idea sparked her to look towards the wall she had been worrying on for over half an hour now. Reaching the wriggling wyrm forward, the sphinx set Garnea down at its base and stood back, watching for the reaction.
Initially the wyrm seemed to settle, but it didn't take long for her attention span to switch forward, at the only other thing in her attention span - the wall. From the sidelines one could almost feel the buildup of nervous energy as wall and wyrm stared one another down, until finally Garnea broke and launched herself at the calcite, beak bashing and gnashing at the edges the sphinx's mallet and chisel had already made.
