13 // 58.80 This was it...the cart was fine, but there was no way they’d get up and keep moving in time. They’d lost their distance! Were they....were they about to die!? Surely a pack of angry Sarane had at least some mercy...? Who were they kidding? They were wild animals! The hoard had now come within Riku’s eye-distance, the tips of their horns or tails barely visible about one hundred feet away in the dark tunnel. He looked at his two Malii with remorse....this was supposed to be a simple in-and-out mission. He figured he could bond with them in the mines like he had with so many other Malii in their sanctuary. He should have just left them home.....so they wouldn’t have to share his same fate. And with all these endless winding tunnels...? How long would it take anyone to find them? Would they even be found? He...hadn’t put much thought into an afterlife, but what if a proper burial was required for it to be a happy one!? “Bwark! Bwark!” Amethyst warned, Oak now chiming in. “Chiiiiiime...!” Axel purred, receiving a puzzled look from the boy. How could it be so calm!? Almost....happy? What WAS this thing!? As the dragons grew even closer, Riku didn’t know whether to pray, guard his Malii, or bark with them at the oncoming slaughter. He reached out and grabbed the both of them, shaking in his arms and whimpering. Amethsyt still barked at the shadows......

14 // 58.85 In the shadow of the cart, the boy held his two Malii and let out a defeated groan. All in one bundle, the familiar glided upon them and grabbed onto Riku’s shoulder, pulling them down into the darkness of the shadow of the mine - just as the dragons approached them. With a roar, they saw the largest Sarane’s teeth coming at their bundled three, and yet they were whisked away...or, down. Falling into the ground, they found themselves immediately after falling up into the light of another mine shaft....a brighter one. Or rather, less incredibly dark. The roar they had left could still be heard echoing through the tunnels, but was clearly very far away. Getting up and checking his chest and body for wounds, Riku said “How....how did we get here?” “Chi-iiime..!” Axel cooed, his light shining a bright enough pink to be visible in the brighter part of the mine they now stood in. Amethyst barked to their left, and Riku saw that the entrance was close by. A light at the end of the tunnel...one he thought he’s never see again. He leveraged the cart, which was still on its side, upwards and then began to push it towards the entrance. The Woodland followed him. This was a day they wouldn’t easily forget - though they may definitely want to. It surely made them grateful for Life and light. For now, the boy made sure he still had the mosaic and then worked his way out of the mine.

15 // 58.90 Reaching the entrance and standing out in the fresh air, they all could see flower petals blowing in the wind. Like a gentle reminder of what beauty the out doors held. Such a close call they had just now....the three still shook from adrenaline. Axel, on the other hand, was fine. Standing outside, Riku opened up the cart and took the painting as well as the few stones he had found. He’d have them appraised for value later in the city, but for now he put then in his backpack. Sniffing the air, the two Malii came over to him knowing what he had inside. They had worked up an appetite! “Okay, you both earned this one!” He laughed, pulling a fish head out his the sealed container in his bag and throwing it up in the air. The Gem and Woodland both jumped, but the fish was caught by Oak. Amethyst let out another Bwark and then came at him with a playful growl. Let the battle begin! “Chiime.” the familiar let out, stepping close to the boy and tugging on his dirty pant leg. Looking down, he said “Is it time to go?” “Chimme.” Riku leaned down and stared into the creatures large, colorful eyes. Such big power and mystery in such a tiny little thing. “Thank you for your help today. You....saved us.” The thing purred and jumped a foot in the air and came slowly down. Riku waved, and it ran away, slipping into the shadow of a nearby tree outside the mining entrance.
