It was quite cold, and Morgan didn't particularly like how strange and oppressive the air felt. Of course, they chocked that up to the air in the hatch being generally un-stirred and thus quite stale, but they could feel what they were certain was a fresher breeze coming from... Somewhere. The darkness was a little stifling and even though it was not logical they felt as if the darkness was keeping them from being able to accurately pinpoint where that breeze might be coming from. Morgan lifts the flashlight from floor-level to a position more equal to their own eyes in an attempt to see anything, but the light wasn't really strong enough to be able to make anything out on the far walls. Morgan could just barely sense that there was something covering the walls, however. They dropped the positioning of the flashlight to have it shine more downwards again for safety's sake, and they tried not to shake so much, since it was scaring Whisper a tad.

Whisper was doing quite well in the dark, much to Morgan's surprise. They had expected her to be absolutely distraught down here in the suffocating dark, but she was simply quiet and keeping close to Morgan. Perhaps in some ways, she was simply so used to and trusting of Morgan that she wasn't as fearful as a creature of her stature would normally be. Still, the human was quite used to their creatures being somewhat reactive to their own reactions, so they did their best not to make Whisper any more frightened than she already would be due to the darkness. They made sure that the flashlight's beam would illuminate the ground just in front of their own steps so that they would know where they were going (at least a little) and every now and again they would flick the light up so that they could ensure their safety. It seemed the area around them was mostly empty.

An empty room filled with a fine layer of dust on the otherwise tile-like floor didn't quite make sense to Morgan. Why would there be nothing down here? Perhaps it was yet another slightly frustrating 'trick' that the mansion's mysterious and yet unseen purveyor had set up to aggravate particularly curious visitors. Morgan was quite certain that whoever owned this particular piece of land must have been both famously rich (even moreso than Morgan was, which was difficult for them to imagine) and either able to employ those that had managed to accumulate a small hoard of nodes among them, or perhaps had quite the grasp on scientific discoveries that even made Morgan a little envious. There had to be someone that owned this particularly inauspicious plot of land, mansion and all. Morgan refused to believe the general consensus that the land was simply magical or haunted. Both of those things seemed especially preposterous! As Whisper moved around to poke her head out of their pocket again, it occurred to Morgan that perhaps creatures had been used to make this place... Particularly well trained and magical ones perhaps.

At first, it would seem that there was not much to be found. Of course the dark was of that extremely suffocating and terribly harsh variety that made it very difficult to try to see anything more than a foot around the beam of light from the flashlight (even under the best of circumstances). However, they did eventually find something that looked a little bit abnormal in the dust, something with a little bit of texture to it that stood out harshly against the soft and slatelike floor. They came closer to it, but stayed very wary as they went to investigate. Whisper scrambled around in a circle in their pocket and they couldn't help but stop (a little spooked at the sudden movement) and look down at her to make sure that she was situated. At the same time the spun around a bit, casting the light again to ensure their safety.

Nothing in the darkness seemed to have changed during the time that Morgan had been focused on the strange lumpy texture against the dust, nor the moment when they had checked to ensure that Whisper had remained safe despite her quick movement. The bespectacled human did notice something that made their blood run a tad colder, however... Whisper was now staring at something quite pointedly in the darkness. Now Morgan was sure that she didn't have nightvision, at least not right now. Morgan couldn't even see in this darkness, though they perhaps could have attempted to rectify that with magic (though it may not have worked, they did sometimes feel like they could pull on the node's power to do specific things, even if they didn't know exactly how it would work)- so they doubted that Whisper had seen anything that they had not. She seemed to follow something in the darkness with her eyes- something slowly moving.

Provided that Whisper was actually watching something specifically (and Morgan had the sense that it was just that in which was occurring at that moment despite all logic pointing towards the contrary), the thing was doing the exact strange low to the ground prowling movements as Morgan would expect from a predator just out of sight. That was enough to raise all of the hair on the bottom of their nape a-standing and Morgan suddenly felt very exposed despite the incredibly thick darkness that surrounded them. They stayed quiet, and controlled their breathing the best they could. They'd increased the speed of their breathing upon climbing down the ladder they had found due to the strain of it (Morgan was just not very strong at all) and only just now had they began thinking about that yet again. Whatever it was, it didn't seem keen on jumping on them just yet. Perhaps it thought that they saw it?

They were doing their best to keep their eyes switching their gaze between checking where little Whisper was looking, and then looking in that direction. It was only just so that they had been able to manage this, and they weren't able to keep the beam of their flashlight on the thing either. It seemed always just beyond the end of the light beam, somewhere in that inky blackness. It most certainly made their blood run cold. After a little while, Morgan forces theirself to step forward, again, and again. They swung their beam wide, and kept their gaze wherever Whisper moved her head. If there was nothing that Whisper had been seeing, at this point Morgan would feel like something was possibly wrong with the tiny creature. She seemed almost transfixed by whatever it was that had caught her attention. The bespectacled human was completely unsure how to feel beneath the gaze of whatever was out there.[29] _4KOJ2MW

After that, Morgan had high-tailed it out of there at the earliest opportunity. Morgan was very sure that there was something in there with them in that horrible darkness. They knew that they couldn't risk staying down in that bunker, so rain or no they practically ran up the ladder and then pushed open the hatch. At this, they made a bee-line to the front gate with the weather hailing on them the whole way. Whisper had stayed hunkered down in their pocket in the rain and hail, so they managed to make it without anyone getting too hurt. The human had to wait another month to go back to the mansion as well, since they managed to break their glasses on the way home. Getting them repaired had been troublesome, they could scarcely work without them even. The next month, however, Morgan took Whisper again back to the mansion to explore the grounds. They hoped that this month would be a little less... Dangerous. [1] - [New Month, Whisper's Levels at 1 per -4 than usual in Relation to Count due to Last Month's Count] 5NiLeaPl

Sometime, Morgan wanted to go to the mansion during this month with Endymion. They couldn't help but have a strong feeling that Endymion would like the theming that was typically put on during this month; that is to say, something vaguely draconic quite a bit of the time in nature. They wondered if Endymion could tell them if any of it was at all authentic or if a lot of it was forgeries. They felt a little silly dragging said items to him whenever they went to visit, so they had not done so yet. They figured that bringing him would be the easiest bet, and would also allow them to really show him how odd this place was. Why hadn't they thought of doing that before? That being said, that day it was another bid to make sure that Whisper was cared for and ready for growth, which they hoped to check to see if she was ready for the upcoming month with any luck.

Whisper needed quite a bit of attention, seemingly even moreso than Painter (which was the only other fossil that Morgan had the gumption to have revived, they didn't want to overburden theirself with creatures tiny enough to fit in the hand most of the time). They weren't sure whether this was because she was 'near to' being ready to grow or if it was just the type of creature she was. Painter had wings, and Whisper most certainly did not. They seemed to be completely different creatures overall, though they were both supposed to be quite similar.
They puzzled on this as they moved up to the gate and reached out for it. They didn't have a lot of time for dilly-dallying this go around. They wanted to get some real exploration done, and not spend most of the day stuck in a bunker like they had during the last month. At least this month seemed to be less chaotic each year before![3] Y6XWWYFn
