Nearly as soon as Morgan pulled open the strangely quite nude-looking gate (usually it was decorated with something or another, but at the moment it was as stark and dark as ever- a resolute watcher that nearly made all of the hair on their nape stand up), they located another couple of those strange little painted eggs. It wasn't something that they would have noticed right away (they were partially hidden) save for the fact that they nearly tripped over their hiding place. Luckily, or perhaps unluckily, they didn't break either one of them. Morgan most certainly felt that there was some kind of bad omen about these objects. However, they had also heard that apparently there was some kind of 'egg hunt' going on, so perhaps these were only... Something to do with that. Despite their misgivings, they carefully collect the eggs and put them in their backpack. Whisper hadn't even had time to point them out to Morgan (probably complete with screeching) so they were quite glad. [4] ZbULXt_I

Morgan had forgotten to close the gate behind them! They always made sure to do it as soon as they went through, since they were worried about offending whoever the owner of these lands was. Previously, leaving the gate open had nearly had them run off of the ground by something or another conjured on the lands, so they quickly moved back around to quickly close it- and they find that it was already closed. The human hardly suppresses an unceremonious 'uh oh' as they realize this. They... Hadn't closed it on their own without thinking about it, had they? They hoped that this was the case. Though of course there was always the possibility that they were spring loaded. It simply did not look like it, however. Whisper tugs on Morgan's pocket lip as she turns around to get comfortable in their pocket. Morgan glances down at her to make sure that nothing is amiss. [5] zIn6duqV

It didn't seem like anything was amiss, though starting off what was intended to be a couple of hours exploring the grounds (and perhaps having a bit of a picnic) with a bout of paranoia was not indicative of their chances of having a nice safe experience. They had several different good experiences at the Mansion, and only a handful of really terrifying ones, but they never quite knew what their luck was going to fetch them! They set their sights on the mansion itself, and turn away from the gate entirely. Despite their possible faux pax (or even worse, possible example of a bad sense of memory that day) they were determined to find a good spot to have their picnic and sit down without being rained on or chased by monsters or perhaps even worse. With two eggs in their backpack and a tiny fossil critter in their deep labcoat pocket, they faced the mansion down with determination. [6] - [*One level for Whisper here.] |bcwdABh

The mansion itself is always a marvel of architecture. The human was sure that it was magically remodeled each month, and though from year to year it did tend to keep its general themes, it hardly ever looked exactly the same. Morgan was sure of it, they'd taken notes on it for long enough to figure that out. Despite several months featuring the mansion looking dressed up in metaphorical finery that exhibited things as outlandish as shells and barnacles from the great 'ocean' beyond Pethia, this month was one of the more 'boring' for how the mansion itself looked. On the outside, it was mostly normal looking, but the human knew that looks could most certainly be deceiving. They had been in the mansion before during this time of year, and the mansion seemed to be just as strange and twisted on the inside as ever. They weren't planning on going inside of it today, since they wanted a calmer bout with Whisper. She'd been quite terrified the last time they'd been on the grounds. [7] iKGNLU2X

Morgan didn't want to have Whisper be terrified at all, let alone often. It would most likely be bad for her future development, if not scare her to literal death. She did seem like a little trooper that loved to explore thus far, but Morgan still didn't trust her little heart not to give out if anything too bad happened. Morgan sometimes felt their heart race at the slightest hint that they may have provoked the mansion, and they were many times little Whisper's size! They wanted to be careful, but it was still 'safer' here they felt than taking Whisper somewhere that she would be more tempted to let herself roam around in. At least Whisper stayed in their pocket quite happily here, though that was not always the case. The grass seemed soft and vibrant and sort of 'bounced' as Morgan walked on it. It felt very nice, they'd forgotten how nice spring grass looked. [8] T_8sgrg0

Whisper looked at the grass with her fairly large (for her face anyway) brightly colored eyes. Morgan glances down every now and again to Whisper just to make sure that she is still there. Morgan still didn't have a good feeling about this trip, but there hadn't been a reason to substantiate that sensation yet. They nearly trip over something very small hidden in a clump of grass that was quite sturdy- their boot toe colliding with it and knocking their balance off since they had most of their weight leaned forward towards that foot and nearly off of their back foot. They managed to catch theirself, and keep Whisper from being jostled by gently holding the bottom of the pocket still with their palm. After cursing a little beneath their breath and squinting back the pain in their big toe, they glanced down at the little clump to get an idea of what the obstruction might have been. [9] _7oRo1_X

Morgan doesn't see anything on first glance, but once they used the toe of the boot (their toe was still smarting, in fact) to move the grass out of the way, they caught a glimpse of something shiny... Oh no. Before they had a chance to steel theirself for the screeching they knew was coming, little Whisper let out an ear piercing WAIL and gestured her tiny little nearly useless arms towards the coveted object. Morgan knew that Whisper would not shut up if they didn't collect it somehow, but it had been stuck in the ground well enough to keep them from being able to kick it loose with their accidental strike from earlier, so they had a hunch that it was attached quite firmly to the ground deep within it and would most likely be impossible to dig up. Whisper's name was becoming more and more ironic each time they went out to explore it seemed... [10] Z_Zxhd1j

The Mansion had a sort of draw to it that kept Morgan from being able to stay away from it for too long. However, they had been so busy at work this year that they could never really find the time to take Whisper back out to go on an adventure. Sure, it most likely wasn't the cleverest idea to take a small sharp-toothed critter to such a dangerous place practically unchecked, but little Whisper seemed to enjoy it well enough. Morgan would have preferred to take Kaodie as well, but they needed to get a little more time in with Whisper before going back to treasure hunting with their trusted companion. Whisper huddled up in the deep pocket of Morgan's labcoat as they walked across the mansion yard past the welcoming gate. They trudged through mounds of snow that went up past their own knees with some difficulty. Of course they had a little time to explore during one of their least favorite mansion rotations!

Whisper did love going on adventures (mostly because she was quite interested in shiny things) but she didn't particularly like the cold at all. She shivered even in Morgan's pocket, though Morgan wasn't very surprised at that. Morgan theirself was quite cold, as their frame didn't tend to hold heat well at all. Perhaps they should have bundled up, but truthfully it was much more cold this go around than they ever remembered it being any of the prior times that they had been to the Mansion during a 'cold' period of time. They weren't planning on staying very long, perhaps just long enough to let Whisper feel like she had a day out of the mansion and then they would head back to the warmth and safety of their mansion.
The snow finally began to level out and shallow off as they continued to tromp through it, but now their pants legs were soaked. They wrinkled their cold-chafed nose at the unpleasant sensation.

Not only was it cold, but it was windy and Morgan couldn't be more displeased at the sensations that it caused. Their nose tip was already red and dry, and their cheeks were rapidly becoming wind-burned in the cold air. They were half-tempted to turn around right there, but they were a decently short distance away from the porch of the Mansion and if they were lucky perhaps the front door would be unlocked and they could sit somewhere warm. With the mansion, however, any wishful thinking could be dangerous. They trudged their way through the snow, each footfall coming away with more and more powdery snow stuck to their damp pants legs. They grumbled beneath their breath but picked up the pace. Whisper poked her head out of their labcoat pocket to look around, but quickly dipped her head back into the pocket when the next whip of wind passed over them, picking up snowflakes and whirling them about as it did. Normally Morgan would have been keeping their eyes peeled for any sort of neat looking trinket or doodad, but it was difficult to keep from squinting to the point of only seeing a slit of the world through their lashes due to the biting cold and whipped up snowflakes. Finally, they managed to get to the porch without finding anything at all. They didn't even mind, and made a beeline for the door as opposed to looking over the porch as perhaps they normally would. The brass doorknob was well over-sized even on the thick cabin-like door, and it was freezing cold in their hands. The cold of the metal sent a shock-shiver through their spine as they twisted the knob. By the time that they got the door open (it was a little difficult due to a pile of snow in front of the door) the joints in their hands were smarting harshly. Whisper squeaked in their pocket as they pushed past the narrowly open door and closed it loudly behind them.

The bespectacled human had realized that they were cold beforehand, but they only realized just how very cold they were once they were standing in front of a roaring hearth in a cozy little cabin-like room decorated in all of the colors of the wintry holidays (blues and whites and silvers mostly). They didn't even wrinkle their nose at the poor choice in décor as they were so relieved that the door hadn't been locked and that they could take a moment to get warm again. Instead of moving around the room to investigate anything like they would normally, they moved to a comfortable but worn looking couch and lifted their labcoat up to ensure that they did not sit on Whisper as they found a seat. They shivered from the cold that they had just endured, and tried to warm up while reaching down to pat Whisper. If they were cold, they -knew- that Whisper had surely been!

Even now, Whisper seemed very reluctant to get out of the labcoat pocket in order to do any exploring at all. Perhaps she was not one of the best creatures to take with them during the cold months to the Mansion. Despite their cleverness, Morgan could sometimes be a little rash in their decision-making, and it would seem that this fact had not changed at all despite the past few months of doing hardly anything else but working. After a little while, they were able to coax Whisper out of the pocket, and onto the much warmer couch. She continued to shiver, and soon enough Whisper curled up on top of one of Morgan's knees just above the line of wet from the snow outside.
That reminded Morgan, their pants had nearly frozen, and now that it was warmer they were thawing and getting even worse wet. They pressed their palm to their forehead and sighed at that realization.

They weren't entirely certain how long that they had sat like that, hind-end to the couch that was so plush that it would be difficult to get up from it later and palm of their cold hand pressed to their wind-chafed forehead. This entire endeavor was one that they already regretted. It was quite interested how much they hated snow, but how they tended to be fine with the more icy months instead. Perhaps if they had enough time they would carve out a bit of time to take another look at the mansion the next month (which was strangely one of their favorite months) with Kaodie. They most certainly deserved having a little time off after this disaster of a year.
Whisper seemed content enough to simply sit curled up on their leg, where she shivered less and less until eventually she stopped shivering at all. The room was actually a little overly warm, now that they weren't freezing from the cold outside.
