x Breeding Pachee was a fairly new experience to Leafy. It was certainly different than breeding Orbaru. From what Leafy could remember, it was more like plant pollination than it was breeding regular creatures. She had borrowed two Pachee for this breeding since she only had a few of her own and none with exceptional colours. Glowfly was a pretty, butterfly female. Leafy was enthralled by her. The female Pachee was sweet and had been bred before. Bright on the other hand seemed new to this. She was fairly certain that he had never been bred before. He was more enthusiastic and less interested in listening to Leafy. They checked into the breeding centre after a little bit of a wait. It was nearing the end of the month which meant there were more people here than usual. With the absence of Orbaru breeding for the moment, more people were interested in breeding. They set her up in a sterilized room. It felt a bit impersonal to Leafy, but if it worked there was no issue with that. It would take a while for the two Pachee to warm up to each other and it was up to Leafy to ensure that everything went smoothly. 1/10

Both Pachee immediately took to investigating the room. Glowfly was a little bit on the timid side. She sniffed the room cautiously, trying to identify the different scents in the room. The room itself was exceptionally clean. If it smelled of anything, it smelled of cleaning supplies. Bright was fairly true to his name. He seemed energetic and he had a more hands on approach to investigating the room. He stepped past the female Pachee and began to rub his ears against a chair, effectively itching them. Leafy smiled at the sight. Pachee tended to be sweet creatures and she liked watching them.
Glowfly watched the male Pachee with interest. She didn’t approach him. No, she was waiting for him to do that. Bright on the other hand was a little preoccupied with his exploration of the room. The female’s ears twitched impatiently. She turned away from the male and decided to focus her attention on Leafy. The human was new to her and thus, she was intriguing. Leafy leaned forward and reached out her hand for the female Pachee to sniff. Pachee biology was a bit of an anomaly. She knew that they didn’t need food for nutrients, but they liked eating berries all the same.

Pachee were fascinating creatures. Leafy had always admired them. She liked most garden creatures. They had this naturalness to them that soothed her. It reminded her of living in a forest. The Pachee she had the pleasure of breeding were beautifully coloured. Leafy could only hope that their offspring would look just as lovely. Bright checked everything in the room. There were some potted plants that were meant to provide atmosphere. Leafy couldn’t identify them. She needed to brush up on her gardening knowledge. She could usually identify the different types of flowers, but beyond that she had some difficulty.
“Do you like the plants?” she asked the Pachee.
They looked at her, but Leafy was fairly certain they couldn’t understand what she was saying. She watched as they interacted with things around the room. The room itself was fairly cookie-cutter. She took a closer look at the plants, marvelling at their wide leaves. She wished she had some sort of a plant identification guide on her. She liked learning things about nature. She wasn’t much of a study, but she liked reading. Books with interesting pictures were always intriguing to her. She wanted to collect more books, but they were rather difficult to come across.

She glanced around the room, looking to see if there was anything for her to do. Watching Pachee was fine and all, but they took a while to get warmed up with one another. Glowfly was still shy, but she sent curious glances in Bright’s direction. Now that Bright had explored the entirety of the room, he was more open to checking Glowfly out. He neared the smaller female, twitching his ears curiously as he examined her. Leafy thought that was likely a good sign. The courtship appeared fairly normal to her. Leafy knew that the whole thing was pretty plant-like in how it occurred.
“Isn’t she pretty?” Leafy cooed at Bright.
She didn’t exactly know how courtship worked. She had precisely zero strategies in doing it herself. All she knew is that the Pachee needed to find each other appealing enough and then something with spores would happen. She didn’t know how it worked biologically, but it seemed interesting enough to her. There was a table for her to sit at and Leafy realized there was some pamphlets on its surface. She leaned forward in order to reach one. The pamphlet seemed to be a guide on how Pachee breeding worked.

Leafy had always admired butterflies. Her first Felusine had butterfly wings similar to Glowfly. It made her feel rather nostalgic for mutation. Bright had a beautiful coat colour. She wanted a Pachee like that for her own. The Pachee she already owned were basic colours. She was in the process of gathering different plants from the gardens for the Pachee Pollen Project, but it was a bit slow-going trying to find the necessary plants. Watching Bright and Glowfly interact made her want more Pachee for certain. The two Pachee were sharing sweet glances. Leafy felt almost like she was intruding on them.
The pamphlet in front of her gave her the required information for how Pachee breeding worked. It seemed that when the male Pachee was ready, he would slap his tail against the ground and release pollen into the air. If the female liked the male well enough, a slit on her forehead would open up to catch the pollen. After that, the pamphlet didn’t exactly explain how the kits were born. Leafy just assumed that she would find that out for herself. She scanned around for more reading material once she had finished with the Pachee breeding guide.

Bright moved closer to Glowfly. He was endlessly curious about her. Glowfly seemed just as receptive, though she seemed like she was being coy about it. Leafy laughed as the female Pachee shied away from the male’s forwardness. It was certainly interesting to watch. Bright pulled back and looked away, as though trying to hide his interest in the female. The girl rolled her eyes as she watched. She supposed that it was great that the Pachee were showing interested in one another, but the whole thing seemed needlessly complicated to her.
“You’re both interested. It should be pretty clear what happens next,” she muttered aloud.
While Glowfly and Bright continued to play coy, Leafy searched the rest of the room for something to entertain herself with. Watching Pachee play was fine and all, but the girl was interested in what the rest of the room had to offer. There were more pamphlets. Some had information on the different mml species. Others were guides for the different activities one could do with their pets. There were multiple breeding guides. She picked up the Orbaru one to refresh her memory. She was vastly more familiar with Orbaru breedings than she was with Pachee breedings.

Bright looked at her curiously. He saw the pamphlet in her hands and stretched upwards to get a closer look at it. Leafy lowered the pamphlet to allow the Pachee to check it out. Glowfly appeared interested as well. She held back a bit, not wanting to interrupt the male Pachee from investigating. When Bright lost interest in the object, Glowfly leaned forward to check it out as well. Both Pachee seemed thoroughly disappointed when the breeding pamphlet turned out to be a regular old booklet. There was certainly no food hidden inside it, that was for certain. Leafy felt a little bad that she had no berries for the Pachee to taste.
“I didn’t have a chance to run to the store. So we’re doing this the old fashioned way,” she told the Pachee.
Even though the Pachee didn’t understand her properly, they seemed interested in hearing her speak. Leafy appreciated that. It made her thoughts feel important. Most creatures seemed polite enough to listen when they were spoken to. Leafy wondered if they liked the sounds of the common tongue. She liked listening to birdsong, perhaps creatures found the noises she made just as interesting. It made sense to her.

Leafy skimmed through the Orbaru breeding pamphlet. It made her wonder what happened to make the Orbaru infertile. Was it some sort of disease? Or perhaps they didn’t like the current weather. Maybe they just didn’t feel like breeding. Whatever the reason, Leafy knew that she wasn’t able to breed any of her Orbaru through conventional means at the moment. She looked at both Glowfly and Bright, imagining them crossbred with an Orbaru. The image would absolutely be adorable. The Pachee would make a pretty colour combination with anything they were bred with. She hoped that their offspring would turn out just as pretty as they were. Leafy especially liked bright colours and Bright certainly lived up to his name. As the two Pachee spent more time together, they began to grow more comfortable. Glowfly was starting to be less shy about returning Bright’s obvious interest. Bright was also growing bolder. He leaned in close to Glowfly and began to groom the pretty female’s coat. If the female Pachee could blush, Leafy was fairly certain that she would. The courtship fascinated Leafy. It seemed so standard, almost like it was somehow ingrained in the Pachee’s DNA. She didn’t think it would ever really make sense to her.

Leafy wondered for a moment how much of it was chemistry. She had never been one to really understand science, but it still served to fascinate her. She liked folktales the most though and sometimes those conflicted with science. She knew some stuff about human courtship as well. She knew that princes gave princesses pretty gifts and whisked them away. Pachee courtship seemed somewhat similar. It was difficult to tell when she couldn’t understand the language though. If she could put Glowfly’s reactions into words, the Pachee might have been bashfully thanking Bright for the grooming and attention.
The interaction between the two Pachee seemed to grow more intense the longer the two spent together. Leafy didn’t think human courtship was quite this fast, but she never had much interest in it. She supposed the love stories in fairy tales happened quite rapidly as well. There were many stories about the concept of love at first sight. Leafy didn’t see how that was very practical. Was it because the two falling in love thought that they were beautiful? If that were the case, she hoped the Pachee would find each other’s coat colours pleasant. Leafy liked the colours herself so it seemed reasonable that they would too.

After a few more minutes of watching the Pachee groom each other, their body language started to shift. It was almost like the Pachee were growing more excited. Leafy knew on paper what was going to happen, but it would be exciting to see it first hand. Bright began to wriggle in place, standing up on his hind legs and stiffening his posture. He made himself appear taller than he had. He slowly began to slap his tail against the ground, releasing the pollen into the air. He then began to rapidly thump his tail up and down, causing the pollen to swirl closer to the female Pachee.
Glowfly almost cooed it delight. If she had been a human, Leafy felt certain she would be giggling in response to the male Pachee. The slit on her forward opened and Leafy found herself looking away. It made her uncomfortable, as though she was watching something that she shouldn’t be. She found herself wishing that it would be over soon so they could leave. The two Pachee seemed to be having a good time with each other, but Leafy still felt uncomfortable. It didn’t take them too long to finish, which was a relief for the girl. She was eager to leave now that they were finished.
