Eww, there’s fungus growing down here!

It was definitely stone though, as some tapping with her nails found. A fossil of some sorts? It was completely bizarre- she had never found anything like it before. Fiera realized with a sense of glee that this may well be one of the strange objects that that man in the main square had been raving like a lunatic about. Fiera glanced around conspiratorily, as if someone was going to just snatch it from her. She squirreled it away in her mine cart, closing the lid tight behind her. She didn't want anyone else seeing it, and she didn't want it to break, either. This was something truly special... but in what way she wasn't quite sure yet. Still... that had happened awfully fast. Maybe there were even more in here to find! The idea was tantalizing- just how many of these objects were down here? She picked up her pick axe, ready to search.

When she turned, she spotted a bit of fungus on the wall, round and off white. Fiera shrugged, being in a good mood from her findings, and grabbed it. Why not. She was sure she could use it as food for one of her pets or something. Might as well! Then, she picked up the lead for her mine cart again and set off down the tunnel once more, keeping an eye out for any more unusual patches along the wall. She was looking for shiny spots as usual, anything that could indicate the presence of a gem, but now she had an additional parameter set into her scanning eyes. Anything... interesting looking. Something dark colored perhaps, like the thing she had found, but really just anything out of the ordinary. She wasn’t sure what forms these fossilized structures could take after all- if that’s what they were.

The tunnel itself was pretty interesting too, to be fair. It’s floors were clear and stone less, the lack of rubble implying that she was the first to come down here. Unlike most untouched tunnels however, this one already had a naturally smooth, winding shape. It was like the wind had flowed down here, riverlike, and carved a stream out of the banded stone. It was certainly very aesthetically pretty, and it made an easy path for Fiera to traverse. It went on for some time as well, bearing only subtle changes in size and shape. The humanish felt like it might have been getting a little taller, but any changes she found were nigh imperceptible. She could have been making it up, for all she really knew. Madison seemed to be enjoying this tunnel too, her head turning every which way to take all the sights in at once.

Fiera ran one hand along the wall, feeling as each band changed slightly in texture as she drew her fingers over them. It was interesting, in a way. She felt like she should know about the bands, their history and why they were colored like that. She was no geologist though- that hadn’t been her interest in school. There must have been someone in the labs that knew, though. The light played off of the multicolored bands well, the shimmering beams making the cave look almost animated, swaying and moving with Fiera’s footsteps. A lesser man might find the effect dizzying, but Fiera only thought it was pretty, having seen much more chaotic things in her lifetime. There were worse places to be walking right now, she knew. She took a deep breath- even the air down here felt clean and invigorating. Much better than some of the other caves.

In fact... WAS there a breeze down here? Fiera flocked her ears, trying to catch the sensation on them again with their delicate hairs. She licked her finger and held it up too, for good measure. Sure enough, there was the barest hint of flowing air down here- a rare thing. Fiera couldn’t help but think of the possibilities. Moving air meant that somewhere up ahead, there was either an entrance to the mines- rare outside the main entrance- or flowing water causing a pressure difference, some sort of underground river. Those were the two situations Fiera could think of, but she supposed it could be anything. Regardless, it meant nothing but interesting things for her- new places to explore, new objects to find. Who knew- maybe she could uncover a new entrance to the mines! Wouldn’t that make the headlines! Well, maybe not, but she was sure SOMEONE would find it interesting.

Fiera kept walking. The path was slight, but there was a definite downward slope to it, gently bringing her and Madison downward into the earth. The more she walked, the stronger the breeze got, too. Madison could feel it too by this point, opening her wings to feel it flow past her thin membranes. Fiera tried to not inhale a finger as Madison’s wings slapped into her face as a result. The candy corn bay only grew more excited at the breeze too, chittering excitedly and scurrying around Fiera’s head. It was cute, but Fiera knew that her hair must be ruined by now. She made a note to teach Madison to fly at some point- it wasn’t fair to the creature for her to be land bound like this, especially when walking was so awkward for her. It would do Fiera’s hair a favor too.

That has to be the thinnest and most fragile looking bone ever... It looks all dusty! How long has it been down here?

As Madison scurried around though, Fiera found herself understandably distracted. Because of that, she nearly didn’t catch herself when she stumbled over a surprisingly sharp dip in the sedimentary stone slope. Madison screeched with surprise and clung to Fiera again, flinging our her limbs and covering the humanish’s face with a wing and digging her claws into head. Fiera three a hand to the wall to catch herself before she fell over completely, no doubt splatting Madison in the process. She let off some expletives too, thankfully muffled by the candy corn bat wing cast over her face. She scrabbled for Madison’s limb with one hand, feeling blindly for any sort of purchase. Eventually she settled for the pet’s body instead, peeling Madison off of her face and setting the writhing creature back down on her shoulder. Fiera took a deep breath, finally unencumbered by bat fur stuck up her nose.

The first thing she saw once she got Madison off of her face was a long, skinny bone sitting on the ground in front of her. How neat! Fiera reached down to pick it up. It wasn’t a stone like the last “fossil” she picked up had been, and definitely was still made of bone. She would think it was a COD bone scrap from someone’s lunch were it not for the shape. (And the fact that she was pretty sure she was the only person who had been down this way.) The bone was long, longer than any chicken bone she had ever seen and straight, not like a rib. It was coated in a good layer of dust too, which she blew off. It seemed quite delicate no matter what it had come from regardless, so she put it in her cart with the other strange object she had found.

She straightened back up, brushing her hands off on her pants. Another goodie, found! When she straightened back up though, she felt a bit silly for focusing on it so hard, considering what was in front of her. The tunnel ahead was not a tunnel at all, and instead opened up into a medium sized room, sliding down toward the other end. Natural pillars supported the ceiling at irregular intervals, the colorful bands from before curling up their lengths. At the far side of the room, near the floor was a hole, with a damp looking spot around it. Fiera knew instantly from looking at it that it was the source of the breeze she had been seeing. Madison seemed to agree, sniffing loudly at the air. Fiera turned to her mind cart, pulling it gently down the sudden one foot drop into the room. It clattered to the floor without fanfare.

The cart followed along behind her easily as Fiera crept toward the hole. She shined her flashlight around the room, but saw nothing else of interest worth investigating. Even if there was, she knew she wanted to find the source of the breeze before anything else. Soon, her feet were splish-splashing across the ground as she hit the damp area, apparently a large puddle beneath the hole. The air smelled wetter too, and heavier. Fiera nearly shivered. She squatted next to the hole, shining her flashlight in and panning it across the area inside. She could see another rock wall, but overall the hole was too narrow for the humanish to make out anything about the interior of the room. She stood back, going for her bag of tools eagerly. If she couldn’t see what was in the hole, she’d just have to open it up some more!

She got out her mallet, happy to have a go at it, if just to see what was beyond the hole. Madison leaned over her shoulder curiously, sniffing the newly wet air, but Fiera scooted her back. "We both know you don't like loud noises, get back there." She said firmly, though she knew that the bat couldn't understand what she was saying. Madison didn't obey either, being untrained, but she moved back of her own accord once Fiera started mining. The impact of the mallet against the wall was louder than anything, resonating through the tunnels. Fiera's first blow barely made a crack however- this wall must have been thicker than she thought. Fiera shrugged and lifted the mallet again- she'd just have to keep working. The more she hammered away at the wall, the more pieces that crumbled off of it, flaking and chipping away. Cracks spread up toward the ceiling, spider-like.

There was a distant fear of the roof caving in, but Fiera thought that the pillars in the room with her would keep that from happening. Sure enough, the cracks didn't spread much further along the ceiling, and instead any further cracks served to connect the larger ones. A spiderweb of holes, to catch Fiera's interest instead of flies. The hole was widening, if slowly. Fiera shone her flashlight through it again, but could only see slightly more wall than before. She tried sticking her head through, but it wasn't quite wide enough for her yet. Fiera sighed and lifted her mallet again. Her work was never done, was it? She kept wailing on the edge of the hole, breaking more and more pieces off. It did seem to be quite thick, half a foot thick at even its thinnest point, making it quite a task for Fiera to hammer through it.

It did slowly break though, releasing rocks onto the floor, which Fiera brushed away so she could keep working. She was trying to not get her pants wet, which left her awkwardly squatting above the puddle on the ground. Her back would probably be screaming at her later, but for now she was safe and dry in her work. Steadily, the hole widened, and Fiera was able to see more of the wall behind it with the help of the electricity-free torch that was attached to her mine cart. That only encouraged her, making her swing her hammer faster and faster at the edges of the yawning gap. Soon, she sat back to admire her work. The hole was significantly wider- hopefully, enough to get her head through now. She leaned down to try- yes! She leaned back and scrambled back for her flashlight, picking the pink object up and turning it on.
