Fiera had owned Krista for some time now, but this was her first time taking her out for a proper training session. She was new to training, but Fiera was quite experienced in training lamadidron in general, so she wasn't expecting too many issues. Her diet wasn't even an issue- Fiera had brought along a mini cooler full of ice cubes stuffed with sand to feed her- apparently the perfect treat for a glacier lamadidron. Apparently Krista had noticed or even scented the ice, and had been glancing at the cooler all day. Or perhaps she just wished it was colder out- it was an unseasonably warm autumn day, and perhaps not entirely pleasant for a creature like her. She would just have to get over it though- Fiera was here for one thing, and it was to teach Krista her name. (And some other things, if she had the time.) Fiera 6 Krista 0.1/2.1 Name 1

Fiera got out the first treat, ready to get started. "Krista!" She called, and even though the lamadidron was facing away from her, she began sniffing the air loudly before turning to face Fiera, her tail twitching with interest. Fiera knew she was more likely responding to the food, but she would accept it. "Good job, Krista!" She said, and tossed the lamadidron the snack. She was more than happy to accept it, her usually snooty attitude dropped for a moment as she reached down to grab it. She crunched the ice loudly and Fiera tried not to think about how unappetizing an ice cube full of sand sounded to her. If it worked for Krista, then it worked. When Krista was done eating, Fiera gave her a moment to sniff around, looking for any fragments she might have missed instead of focusing on Fiera. Then, the humanish spoke up again.

"Krista!" She said, trying to get the lamadidron's attention again. Fiera kept shouting, but Krista hardly seemed interested, and instead continued rooting around in the dirt at her feet for any stray shards of ice she had missed. When it became clear she wasn't going to find any however, she finally looked up at Fiera, who was trying her hardest to get Krista to respond to her name. "Ok, that sucked. But. Good girl, Krista." Fiera said, begrudgingly tossing her another ice cube. As the lamadidron crunched on it, the humanish sighed. That wasn't great, but she supposed it was a little bit closer to what she was going for? She just had to hope that she was getting the idea of what Fiera wanted in exchange for these treats by now. Soon the glacier lamadidron was back to her old tricks, looking around for more ice shards, having sadly finished her treat.

Soon she was even snuffling over to Fiera's shoe, sniffing all over it with wet gasps. "Wh- come on, Krista!" Fiera said, a little bit grossed out as she pulled her foot back. Krista looked up at her with surprise, as if she forgot that Fiera's feet were attached to her. And yet, Fiera realized, that meant that she had paid attention when Fiera said her name. "...Ok, I can respect that. Good job, Krista." Fiera said, tossing her another ice cube treat. Krista snuffled happily and tried to catch it in midair, and Fiera resisted the urge to laugh when it bounced off her head instead. Still, she gave the lamadidron a moment to eat. It looked like they were getting somewhere- she just had to wait and see if it would continue. She didn't have to wait long though- those ice cubes didn't last long in Krista's mouth.

When Krista was ready, Fiera gave the trick one last try. "Krista!" She called, trying to get the creature's attention... and to her surprise, she actually did it. Not politely of course- the facial expression Krista gave her was one that could be safely filed under "derisive", but as long as she actually did it, Krista could look at her with whatever facial expression she wanted. "Good job, Krista!" Fiera said, and tossed her one last ice cube. And just like that, Krista had learned a trick. Not a very fancy one mind you, but it was no doubt the first of many. And that was all that Fiera wanted out of her today- just one simple trick. She had no doubt exhausted the lamadidron's delicate constitution (if Krista's flair for dramatics was to be trusted), so Fiera went ahead and reattached her lead before bringing her home once more.

"Do I HAVE to?" The yang harachiu grumbled. "What? Yes. I mean- reading is fun!" Fiera said, setting the books down. Marley glared at her, unimpressed. They were getting far too old to not know how to read and write, but they hadn't taken well to learning on their own. She'd much rather spend her time running around outside and getting into (and out of) trouble. While Fiera could relate, she knew that she had to get down to brass tacks on Marley's education sooner or later. "Ok, let's take a look at the alphabet." She said, holding up some flash cards. Marley rolled their eyes. "That's dumb, EVERYONE know's the alphabet." "Ok, then what's this one?" Fiera said, holding up the letter "A". "....V." Marley said with only a little trepidation. Fiera's attempt not to laugh was all it took to let her know she hadn't gotten it right. Fiera 1 Marley 5.1/7.1 Literacy 1

Fiera was quick to correct her, but then she spent the rest of the day just teaching Marley her letters- the shapes and what noises corresponded to them, along with things like "th" and "sh" that made different sounds. It took Marley a while just to remember what shapes meant what letters. Luckily there were a lot of places to practice- in the market, on the street, all Fiera had to do was point out a street sign and ask Marley what letters were on it. She gave the harachiu little nubs of pencil lead and scraps of paper to practice drawing them on, making sure she knew both upper and lower case letters- cursive could come later, if at all. Within a week or two Marley had the letters themselves memorized, though she didn't quite know when to use them yet. But that was fine- it was only one step in the process.

Next was teaching her phonics in earnest. Fiera got a bunch of books from the library- ones that Marley was definitely too old for by now, but there was no time like the present to start learning. She sat the teenage harachiu down in front of them and pointed out the words letter by letter, carefully sounding them out for her. Then, she let Marley do it on her own. They already knew the letters and what sounds they should make, and for the words that didn't sound exactly like they were spelled ("enough" was a particularly tough one) Fiera taught her how to go off of context clues and to think about other words that she did know that were spelled similarly to try and guess how it was pronounced. After all, Marley already knew how to speak, so guessing what words went in context with others wasn't too difficult for her to get.

Fiera slowly worked up the difficulty of books from there- though Marley wanted to get going a lot sooner, given how much she resented the "baby crap" Fiera had stuck her with. Of course, the humanish wasn't about to just give her the standard young adult action shlock. She also made sure to give Marley plenty of educational books, things about history and science that Marley also hated, but at least it wasn't something that you could read in a baby voice anymore. At first Fiera had to supervise her to make sure she was actually reading and not just cutting off study time to play hooky, but after a week or so Fiera realized that she didn't have to force her to sit there and read anymore. Instead, she would walk into a room to find Marley reading on her own, quietly voicing certain unfamiliar words to herself before figuring them out and returning to reading in silence.

From there, all Fiera really had to do was keep her fed with books. While Marley didn't have much of an interest in higher education, she DID refuse to back down from challenges presented to her, and what was reading if not a challenge? Fiera handed her increasingly more advanced chapter books and eventually took her to the library so she could check out books herself, allowing the harachiu to take them home and read them. It was a bit difficult for her given that the books were often larger than she was, but something about the physicality of having to stand up and use both hands to turn a page seemed to help the somewhat hyperactive yang harachiu to maintain focus. It took several months, but soon Marley could read silently or out loud with the best of them, having obtained a skill that most sapient creatures nowadays took for granted.

It had been a while since Fiera had taught a pet the basics. Mango certainly needed it though, as he was about as fresh as fresh could get. She was planning on training the little repointe for greatness, but he was far from it right now. He trembled in his hooves, and seemed afraid of... well, just about everything except for Fiera. Fiera was glad that she was granted access to the privileged category of "not scary", but it made everything else much more difficult. She brought him to the park today for training and even now he startled at every little creak of branches or chirping birds. She was just going to try and push through it though, and hopefully he would get used to it soon. First things first, she wanted to start with his name- it was the first trick she taught all of her creatures, and Mango would be no exception. Fiera 6 Mango 3.1/5.1 Name 1

Luckily, she had just what she needed for it- a bag of meat flavored treats specifically formulated for carnivores like repointes. They were small and soft enough that he would have no issues eating them... ideally. While Mango toddled around the surrounding area, sniffing at every little nook and cranny (and jolting away when anything moved) Fiera opened the bag and grabbed a treat, palming it into her hand. "Mango!" She said, as he stared warily at a tuft of grass poking between two pavestones. He didn't seem liable to listen to her, given that he couldn't take his eyes off of his terrifying new acquaintance for a moment. But Fiera wouldn't be deterred. "Mango!" She said again, this time a little bit louder but still the repointe did not respond, apparently having written her off as a non-threat and thus not worth listening to for the time being.

Fiera sighed, but realized she'd have to raise her voice. "Mango!" She said again, putting a little bit more of an edge into the word. The repointe kit's head snapped away from the grass finally, staring at her with his big, wet eyes. He didn't like the tone, that was for sure. The humanish was quick to soothe his fears however, and immediately tossed him a treat. "Good boy, Mango!" She said, her voice now honey sweet. He sniffed at the treat warily, trying to decide if it was friend or foe, but eventually his hunger won out and he snapped it up while Fiera looked down with pride. Then, she waited for him to go back to what he was doing, to lose interest in her. That didn't take very long- apparently that tuft of grass needed a lot of supervision, and Mango was the one who needed to give it.

"Mango!" Fiera said once he got settled, immediately trying to break him out of his reverie again. His ear flicked this time, but he made no move to look at her. That was better- it meant he was actually listening when she said his name now- but it wasn't perfect. "Mango!" She said again, once again cranking up the volume. This time he looked over at her, apparently not wanting her to borderline yell at him again. Fiera instantly went back to being sweet, praising her pet for his good behavior, and this time tossing him two treats instead of one. That seemed to catch his interest even more, his little ears perking up as he trotted over to eat them. It didn't take him long, now that he knew they were tasty. Soon the treats were gone and he was back to looking at rocks and leaves on the ground.

Fiera was sure that this would be the clincher though- the final time they'd need to do this. "Mango!" She called, and with little hesitation the wild repointe looked up from the rock he was sniffing at, his focus on it instantly broken. Perfect! Fiera threw him another treat and decided to try it a couple more times, just to be safe. Each time however he responded admirably, with no beating around the bush. It looked like he wasn't a disobedient sort. Rather, he just needed to be treated with enough patience to be taught the basic idea first, after which he would perform it perfectly well on his own. Fiera was thrilled- that was exactly what she was hoping for out of him. If that was how he behaved with even a very basic trick, she couldn't wait to see how he'd respond to more complicated tricks in the future.
