Lincoln was Fiera’s pet of the day for training, and it was going… interestingly. Lincoln was always a stubborn creature, and getting him here had not been easy for the humanish. Fiera loved the big lug of course, but she wasn’t a fan of half walking, half dragging a creature that was nearly her size through the park, attracting odd stares from other pedestrians. He didn’t seem to enjoy being dragged either, but he didn’t seem to want to listen to her either, so that was her only option. Unlike most of her pets, he had reached a stage in his training at which she felt like he could finally learn some battle moves. With any luck, she’d be able to whip him into shape as a proper fighting pet. If not… well, contests were always fun. As were housepets, though he was a little large to be considered as one.

She had a couple of elemental moves on her training list start with, but she also thought that some other tricks and non-elemental moves could help him out as well. She’d only get to the latter ones if she had the time, however. It was better to start with simpler moves first, and she’d fill in the gaps later. She was sure he’d be excited to learn his element too. It was natural to him after all- it wouldn’t really be learning anything new so much as learning how to utilize what he already had. The first trick she had in mind was easy enough- Electric Bite. Bite thing, use electricity. Not exactly difficult for a critter like him, and he certainly bit her often enough to get the idea. The only hard thing would be getting him to do them at the same time, and hard enough to (theoretically) hurt.

She eventually dragged him onto a part of the park that was thankfully empty of grass and fallen leaves. Autumn was in full swing, and colorful but wet leaves were piled up on any horizontal surface. That didn’t make the BEST substrate for teaching electrical moves however, and as a result she had sought out a place that would be safer for her to teach. This spot was far from any trees, with pebbly, silty ground too packed for grass to grow. It was also constantly buffeted by wind, which both swept away any leaves that landed on it and made Fiera shiver and zip up her jacket a bit more. Lincoln was happy enough with it, raising his nose into the wind to sniff at it, likely trying to detect storms in the distance. She let him get his bearings for a minute before she dropped her training bag, ready to begin.

Her first item was a chainmail bracer she had gotten from the pet supply store- ideal for teaching a pet how to bite living things (though she was hoping not enough to break her arm). Next was a roll of electrical tape, which she used to wrap around her arm under the bracer. The damage from the bite was one thing, the threat from electricity was another issue entirely. Hopefully this would keep her pet from dealing too much damage that way. Third was a cotton hankerchief- if worst came to worst and Lincoln wasn’t zapping on his own, she considered rubbing it on him to build up static electricity. And finally, she had a whole sack of pennies. She had picked them up off the sidewalk and out of fountains over the past couple of months, and had sterilized them to form Lincoln’s most favorite treat- nearly pure copper.

She got herself ready, and Lincoln trotted over himself at the clinking sound of the pennies, snuffling happily. By that point, Fiera had successfully put on the bracer, and was prepared for the best.... Or the worst, as it was. When he came over, she let him sniff it experimentally. Between the wind blowing through, the bare ground, and his own electrical tendencies, static electricity had built up, and when he moved his snout close, a bolt of electricity flashed between them. They both flinched, surprised, but Fiera was quick to take advantage of it. “Good job, Lincoln!” She praised, even though her pet seemed quite bewildered. “Good zap bite!” She said again, and fumbled for the bag of pennies. She poured a couple into her palm and offered them to him. The lamadidron honked loudly at the sight and gladly shoved his nose into Fiera’s hand to snap them up.

So far so good, she thought as he pulled away, crunching loudly. She got lucky with that initial spark, but hopefully she could build off of it. She held out the bracer again, and pressed it against his snout. He honked quietly and pulled away, but she reiterated the movement. “Zap bite!” She said. “Lincoln, zap bite!” He kept honking with irritation and bared his teeth, letting off a brief crackle of electricty to discourage her from going near his face. Despite his efforts however, Fiera only praised him for the effort. “Atta boy, Lincoln! Good zap bite!” She said, and tossed him another couple of pennies. He looked at them with confusion for a moment, but decided to not look a gift horse in the mouth and leaned down to chew them up. Still, his eyes were trained on Fiera, and she could practically see the cogs turning behind his eyes.

Lincoln was starting to get the idea, from the looks of it. She still needed to work up to the full attack, however. Once he had finished eating, she went back in. Lincoln looked at her suspiciously, already knowing that he was going to get grabbed at, but didn’t move away. Once again, she shoved the bracer right in his face, and he honked loudly. “Zap bite Lincoln, zap bite!” She urged, and this time he nipped at her, sparking with irritation. Her body clenched up as the electricity raced through it, and she suddenly realized that this electrical tape was NOT working as well as she wanted it to. Ow. Maybe she should try something different. Still, she praised Lincoln and gave him a few more pennies before she went and hunted down a stick. It was perfect- long and staff shaped, enabling her to ground the zaps as they came. She wrapped it in electrical tape too, to be safe.

Lincoln was back in action even faster now, getting the hang of the system they had worked up. This time, she stuck the branch in the ground at an angle, gesturing at it. “Ok Lincoln… zap bite!” She said. He looked at her curiously and then started walking toward her. “No no, not me!” She said frantically. She gently guided his head toward the branch instead. “Zap bite!” She said again, pointing at it. He looked at her, looked at the branch, placed his mouth around the wood and nibbled on it while sparking wildly around his head. She flinched away from the larger sparks, but ultimately appreciated it. Lincoln had the basic idea of what she wanted, now it was just a matter of getting him to do it hard enough to hurt. She glanced at the bag of pennies next to her, and an idea bubbled up in her mind…

She picked up the bag of pennies, Lincoln’s head eagerly following its path. She tossed him a couple as a reward while she went hunting for another stick or log. Eventually she found one that was about what she wanted- partially hollowed out by insects and rot, but still with a firm outer shell. When she came back, Lincoln was thankfully still sitting there patiently, ears pricked. When she got back, she picked up the bag of pennies again, whlich got her lamadidron even more excited, snuffling loudly and trying to stick his head under her arm to get at the bag. “Hang on a minute…” She said, pushing him away while she tried to work. It didn’t work too well, and eventually he just sat there with his head under her arm. Finally she was done, having created 3/4s of a hollow log, the interior stuffed with pennies.

Fiera set it down in front of Lincoln, and held it down. At first the lamadidron tried to roll it over, snuffling at the bottom and nudging it with his claws, but the humanish held it fast. He honked under his breath, almost sarcastically. Finally, Fiera gave the command. “Lincoln, zap bite!” She said. He looked at her curiously. “Zap bite!” She reiterated. He leaned down, and chewed at the wood, crackling with electricity. When that didn’t work, he sniffed at it- she KNEW he could smell the coins- and slapped his tail on the ground with frustration. Finally, he reared back and bit it as hard as he could, electricity pulsing into the wood. Fiera gritted her teeth and felt her hair stand up. When she opened her eyes, she saw that the wood had been bitten clean open, and Lincoln was feasting on the contents. Fiera patted him on the head and told him a good job, but honestly it wasn’t needed- he already had his prize.

Now that Lincoln had learned how to use electricity at least a little bit, Fiera wanted to teach him how to kick it up a notch. The nice thing about electrical moves was that you could pump more juice into them to do more damage, even if it took a little while to charge up. She had even learned about a specific move that people taught their pets to do that did just that, called ‘electric charge’. The instruction on how to teach it were a little vague however, as it was difficult to set an example for pets to follow. Thankfully, Lincoln always let off at least a little electricity every time he got excited, and he was already in a ‘zappy’ sort of mood after learning electric bite, so hopefully it wouldn’t be too hard. As usual, she had fistfuls of coins to feed him if he needed encouragement.

Fiera sat down next to her backpack and beckoned Lincoln over. Seeing the bag of treats before he even noticed Fiera, the copper lamadidron hardly needed any encouragement, making a delighted squeal has he trotted to Fiera’s side. He tried to stick his head in her lap to grab the bag, but she quickly shoved him away. “Come on, be good.” She said. He honked and pushed against her hand, pawing at her leg with a forelimb at the same time. “Dude! Stop!” She chastised, but if anything that just made him try harder, straining in the direction of her lap. Eventually, he started sparking with frustration, and Fiera flinched away from him. She did her best to collect herself in time. “Good charge, Lincoln!” She said, laughing, and popped open the bag to give him a couple coins. He smacked his tail on the ground happily and leapt upon them.

Lincoln now knew from getting the good tasty food that he had been rewarded for doing… something, but what it was he did right was still unclear. After he had finished eating his food, he tried a few things again to figure it out. Was pushing his head into owner lady’s lap what got him treats? No, that just made her make loud noises. Was it making loud noises back at her? No, that just made her stop making noises. Was it doing the crackle crackle? Oooh, THAT had done it. The fuzzy lady practically threw the tasties in his face at that. Lincoln made the happy noise and snapped them all up, some before they even hit the ground. The fuzzy owner lady was making her happy noises too, along with his name that new noise. He guessed that noise was her telling him to do the crackle crackle.

After a few false starts with Lincoln doing seemingly random actions, he had finally gone back to charging up with electricity when Fiera said ‘charge’, and she was quick to reward him for it. Now she just had to drive the point home. She whistled at the lamadidron, who had gotten distracted already, sniffing at various rocks around the area they were training in. Had he really gotten bored and was trying to find more food already? “Lincoln! Over here!” She called again. He looked up, gnawing on a pebble. “...Ok.” She said, not willing to wrestle it from him. “You can keep that. Now, charge!” She said, pointing at him. He paused for a second, looking at her, before electricity crackled over his body in a wave, leaving the smell of ozone in the air in its wake. Even though she couldn’t see it after the visible wave stopped, the air on her arms rose up. Perfect.

She threw him even more coins than before for that, and he honked loudly with surprise and fell upon them, slurping them up loudly. It was kind of gross to Fiera, as she couldn’t imagine eating actual coins, but each to their own, she supposed. Once he was done, he looked back at her, ears pricked. “Ok Lincoln.” She said, rubbing her hands together. “Let’s try this one more time… charge!” She commanded, pointing at him. Encouraged by the large amount of coins given for his large amount of electricity, Lincoln crackled to life, massive waves of electricity pulsing off of his body before going back in. By the time he was done, Fiera could practically hear the hum of electricity stored in him, and some instinct deep in her bones told her that it was a really bad idea to touch him like this. Even if she couldn’t touch him however, he could certainly touch his food- and he got a whole handful of pennies for his trouble.
