Algol chirped happily, snapping his head forward to take the treat from Fiera’s open palm. The humanish, admittedly, flinched away a little at the sarane’s quick movement, but couldn’t fault him for his enthusiasm about his food. She did take the opportunity of his distraction to bother him some more though, fiddling with his horns and turning his head from side to side to look at him. Algol seemed happier to accept it than before he had the treat- hopefully he was starting to associate these weird touches with food, something he always enjoyed. Fiera was also quick to follow up the more uncomfortable gestures (such as touching near his eyes or looking at his teeth) with more pleasurable ones, such as scritches behind the ears or under his jaw. Soon, her touches seemed to hardly bother the sarane, though he did start up again with begging for treats after he finished his initial piece of beef.

Fiera got out another piece from the cooler, making sure to shoulder him off when Algol tried to get in there himself. The humanish let him start nosing at her hand again, but didn’t open it… or at least, not yet. She moved on to his wings, gently opening and closing them. When he responded well to that, she tried holding them open for an extended time. When he started tugging at it gently, she praised him for being patient and let go. Then, she tried holding his wings closed instead, pinning them against his body with one arm and part of her chest. Algol clearly didn’t like the pressure, or having some of his limbs pinned down like that, but that was why Fiera had gotten out a treat. When he started hissing and fidgeting, Fiera opened her hand. “It’s ok, Algol! Be good, now!” She reassured, bringing the scrap close to his face.

Algol chirped irritably, but accepted the treat and stopped wiggling quite so much. Fiera let him stay pinned for a while like that. While she had trained him not to bite, wrestling was something that she’d like to avoid if possible, so the longer she could get him to accept her holding him down, the better. The seconds ticked away as Algol chewed on his treat, and Fiera even gave him another one to encourage the good behavior. Eventually, Fiera was pretty sure they had gone nearly a full minute without him wiggling or trying to escape, and she started to straighten up. As the pressure on his back disappeared, Algol glanced over his shoulder. Fiera met his gaze with an encouraging pat on the head, and some brief scritches behind one ear. The sarane didn’t complain about that, and even stretched to show his pleasure and relaxation, following it up with a yawn.

Things were going well! Fiera hadn’t been bitten once yet, and she’d take that as a victory. She only had a couple body parts left to go. She was starting to taper off the treats, too- giving Algol smaller and smaller chunks for his cooperation, until he was left licking meat juices off her fingers. After all, she wouldn’t always have treats in the future if she needed his cooperation. While she was doing that, Fiera moved on to his feet, checking between the toes and tugging on the claws slightly. She also took the time to fiddle with his limbs, pulling them out and placing them in various positions. “Stay.” She told Algol, every time he tried to take one of them back. Algol would do it, but only with the promise of a treat. At least she was slowly weaning him off of those. After a few repetitions, he was letting her puppet him around like a pro.

Soon, she wasn’t giving the young sarane any treats at all for his patience. Instead, he was just… patient. Though perhaps that wasn’t the right word to use- it was more like he just didn’t care about what she was doing anymore. Algol knew that she wasn’t goinng to hurt him, and while the things she was doing might not be the most fun for him, they didn’t hurt and she usually stopped soon anyway. Fiera went through each part of his body, but it all turned out the same. He’d let her push him around and adjust him, and eventually she’d move on. The sun was high in the sky, making him perfectly pliable and lazy for the task as he basked. Fiera sat back on her heels, satisfied. This would make things a lot easier for her in the future- in fact, it would make things easier for the both of them.

Fiera looked at the sky, clear and crisp above her- the days were getting shorter and shorter lately, and a chill was starting to creep through the air, though it wasn’t quite cold enough to require a jacket yet. The sun was currently just slipping off of its peak, and Fiera knew that night would come on quickly. Still, she figured that she had time to teach one more trick. Something fast and easy would likely be the best for Algol right now, a cool down session for the end of the day. She wracked her brain. The sarane already knew most of the basics, and was already quite obedient from the time they had spent together. But she did have ONE more idea for a basic trick to learn. She might as well teach it to him while he was still small enough to manhandle. “Sit” was a classic of pet training, after all.

“Algol!” She called, waving the sarane over. “Come!” She said. She’d need him up and standing for this, so it was better to call him over from where he was laying down than it would be for her to go to him and try to get him to stand up. The sarane yawned and stretched before trotting over- she supposed that the cold must have been making him sleepy. Hopefully it wouldn’t affect him enough that he wouldn’t be able to learn well for this trick. She didn’t really know enough about reptiles to say. ...He WAS a reptile, right? Before she was able to speculate any further however, Algol was in front of her, blinking and tilting his head inquisitively. “Right.” Fiera said, shaking the thoughts from her mind. “Let’s get started, hm?” She continued cheerfully. Then, she stood up and walked around the back of the brown sarane.

Algol’s gaze followed her, but he didn’t think to move. He perked up when he realized that she was holdinng a chunk of meat, however. “Ok Algol,” She said, placing a hand on his brown and scaly haunches. “Sit.” She then pushed down on his hips, placing an uncomfortable amount of pressure on him. Algol grumbled, and to escape the awkward sensation, slowly lowered himself to the ground until he was in a sitting position. “Good boy, Algol!” Fiera said happily to her pet, and offered him the treat. Algol seemed surprised, but accepted it. Had he done something worth being rewarded for? She could almost see the cogs turning in his head as he gulped down the chunk of meat. She quickly reloaded her hand from the meat cooler, ready to give it another go. Algol turned to face her, happy to do anything if it meant getting more food.

“Ok Algol, sit!” She requested, holding up the treat. Algol shuffled his back feet, clearly knowing that he was meant to be doing SOMETHING… but not being quite sure what. Fiera huffed, but in an amused way. She brought herself next to him, and put her hand back on his hips, pushing down. He sunk down even faster than before, plopping himself down on the ground. “Good boy!” She said, tossing him the meat. He stood up again, chirping happily as he caught it. Fiera walked back around him as he ate, readying another chunk. He was getting better at this, but she needed him to actually do the trick on his own. She tried again. “Algol, sit!” She said, holding up the treat. Finally, he shuffled his back feet and lowered himself to the ground, looking at her expectantly. Fiera smiled with satisfaction and threw it to him, letting him have his snack.

He reared onto his hind legs, grabbing it out of the air, flapping his small wings for balance. Fiera was happy with his progress- he had finally sat! He knew what she meant, and what he was supposed to be doing. The big question however, was whether or not he’d do it without the promise of a treat. Despite Algol’s desiring gaze, Fiera simply sat on the cooler of treats instead. Algol trotted around, looking at her eagerly, but she made no move to get him anything else. Finally, she pointed at him. “Algol, sit.” She said. He turned his head at her curiously, as if confused. Fiera held her breath… but he did indeed sit, after a moment of pause. Fiera breathed out. “Good job, Algol!” She giggled, clapping. She felt silly for ever having been worried- Algol was far more obedient than she had given him credit for.

Fiera brought Madison, her candy corn bat to the park, early in the morning. The seasons were changing and with it came shorter days. Fiera would have preferred to sleep in later, but it wasn’t horrifically early. She was only a little sleepy right now. Luckily, the forest was still dark, perfect for training her candy corn bat. They were supposed to be nocturnal creatures, so with any luck this would help keep her pet calm and comfortable. It was a little cold out, but thankfully Fiera had dressed up warmly as well. The exercise from training would keep Madison warm too, hopefully. The humanish glanced at the little creature sittiing on her shoulder. She was a puff of bright orange fur, shiny eyed and curious at her surroundings. She sniffed the cool November air, fascinated by her new surroundings. Fiera chuckled- she needed to get this girl out of the kennels more.

The humanish stopped in the center of a large, flat clearing. The trees overhead formed a thick canopy above them. With any luck, they’d have several hours to train before light even began to peek through the leaves. Fiera hoped that Madison was a quick learner though- Fiera had a long list of things to teach her, and not easy things either. Still, like most pets, Madison’s name was first on the list of things to teach her, as the starting point for all other tricks. She set the candy corn bat on a low hanging branch of a nearby tree, letting her get her bearings. Then, Fiera got out a little pouch she had been keeping in her pocket. Inside was dozens of pieces of Madison’s favorite- candy corn. The name of the species wasn’t just a reference to their coloration- it was an accurate description of their diet.

Apparently, the labs had designed them to subsist on nothing but sugar. Odd, but very easy to fund in the post Vai Min Mur season, when everything was on clearance. While Fiera only had a small baggie in her pocket, her backpack had a whole sack of candy corn in it. She stood there next to Madison, silent, letting her look around. Then, she spoke up. “Madison!” She said sweetly. The candy corn bat looked over, out of surprise at the sudden noise more than anything. Fiera would see that attention rewarded though, and got a piece of candy out from her pocket. Madison’s ears flicked up comedically at the sight of it, pointing straight up in the air. “Here you go! Good job!” The humanish said, offering it to her. Madison leaned off the branch to take it from her, gripping it with her tiny teeth before leaning back again.

Fiera gave her a minute to finish chewing, trying not to laugh at the adorable noises she was making. Once she finished eating though, Fiera was quick to get back into it. “Madison!” She tried again, making sure to say it clearly. She didn’t need Madison to respond to anything that sounded vaguely like her name, after all. The candy corn bat responded even faster this time though, chirping loudly at Fiera. Fiera smirked and got out another piece of candy corn, driving the little creature wild. The humanish was quick to give it to her before she threw herself off the branch. Madison grabbed her hand with her wings as she approached, shoving the piece of candy into her mouth greedily. Fiera pulled her hand back. “Ha! Nearly lost a finger! Easy, you!” She said sarcastically, shaking her hand for emphasis. She didn’t think Madison’s jaws were strong enough to draw blood, if she was being honest.

Luckily, there was other ways that a creature like her could deal damage, if Fiera played her cards right. But now wasn’t the time for that- they were working on basics to starting out. And now it was time for the final test of her first basic trick- seeing if Madison had learned her name. Fiera decided to try a couple words that weren’t her name first, to gauge her reaction. “Hamburger!” She tried first, calling out. No response. Then, “Machine! Banana! Lindsay!” Madison seemed more interested in grooming herself more than anything. Then, the moment of truth- “Madison!” Fiera called, her ears pricked hopefully. The candy corn bat paused, looking out at Fiera from under a wing. Fiera let the tension in her shoulders unwind, smiling. “Atta girl, Madison!” She said, offering a finger. Madison allowed herself to be pet as Fiera praised her for learning her first trick- hopefully, the first of many.
