Finally, the last thread of Madison’s patience snapped in two, and the candy corn bat opened her eyes, glaring at Fiera. A growl rose in her throat, which developed into a full screech, right at Fiera, as if she was demanding the humanish to let her sleep already. Fiera could almost feel her face being blasted off by the force of it. Wowza. She blinked a few times, trying to collect her thoughts. That… was perfect! Exactly what she needed! Fiera was quick to get her treats together. “Good screech, Madison! Good job!” She said, throwing them to the candy corn bat (so she wouldn’t have to get up to eat them, of course.). Madison appeared surprised, but still a little miffed. What, so she was supposed to flip out at Fiera? At least she was getting fed for this. She grumpily ate her treats, eyeing her owner the whole time.

Fiera stared right back as Madison ate, a stupid grin on her face. This was going well! Her first try, and Madison had already done exactly what she wanted! Now she just needed to get the bat to do it enough times that she’d know to do it on command! “Ok Madison… screech!” She said, pointing at Madison once she was done with her candy. She just looked at her, unimpressed. “Come on, screech! Screech already!” Fiera whined. She guessed they weren’t there quite yet. Which meant that it was back to bothering Madison until she did it. She started poking the bat again, prodding her with her (admittedly pretty sharp) nails. “Screech. Screech.” She kept repeating as she did so, trying to annoy Madison into obeying. It seemed to be working, as Fiera could hear a distinctive growl building up in her throat, threatening to boil over if Fiera wasn’t careful.

Of course, that was exactly what Fiera wanted- for it to boil over. She went to prod Madison one last time, but before the word “screech” could even finish passing her lips, the bat opened hers again. Fiera was blasted with another screech, this one spooking her to the point of even falling over, toppling to the ground out of surprise. How DID a creature her size make a noise so loud? Fiera praised her deeply with some ‘Good screech!’es and threw her some treats in the form of handfuls of candy corn, but she suspected the feeling of being left alone to rest was the real treat for Madison right now. And that was fine by her- Fiera needed a break for a second here, if just to make sure her heart didn’t give out from shock. She sat off from her a little bit, testing her pulse to make sure it was still there.

Still, this was her intention. Now if only she could get Madison to do it on command. Maybe if bribed… Fiera got out another piece of candy corn and held it between her finger tips. Then, she crept back over to Madison, holding it out in front of her. “Madison!” She called, getting the candy corn bat’s attention. It worked, and she was met with the most withering glare she had ever gotten from an animal. “That’s fair…” Fiera said, but only under her breath. She had training to do, though. “Ready? Screech!” She said, holding out the candy more emphatically. Madison looked at the candy and back at her before sighing- and drawing in an even deeper breath. Fiera thought to at least plug her ears this time, but only had one hand to work with. As a result, the screech still hit her full blast, making her ears ring- or one of them, that is.

“G-good job, Madison…” She said, feeling a little woozy still. She dropped the piece of candy corn, and Madison begrudgingly ate it. Fiera sighed. Well, at least she knew how to do it on command now. But would she do it even if Fiera wasn’t trying to bribe her with treats? She almost didn’t want to try again, with how badly her ears were ringing. Still, she had to get this done. The tournament was going to stop accepting entries soon. “Ok Madison, you ready?” Fiera said, her voice dripping with sweetness. Madison only gave her a disgusted glare. “Ok cool, looks like you’re ready!” She said, trying not to drop the act. “Ok… screech!” She said, pointing at Madison. She almost thought that the bat wasn’t going to do it, judging from the look on her face. A moment later however, she let out a mighty screech, practically flattening Fiera’s face with the force of it. Yeah… she definitely had this trick down pat.

Fiera let Madison rest after that- she wasn’t sure her candy corn bat could take much more training. And Fiera wasn’t sure her ears could take much more screeching. That was a real set of pipes Madison had on her, that was for sure. While Madison slept off her exhaustion, Fiera took the time to go back over her training list. They were making some very good progress, though there were still some gaps in Madison’s knowledge. Fiera definitely wanted to fill those in- the more things she could learn before the competition, the better. After all, if Fiera was going to prove herself a celebrity in the labs, she needed to be skilled in all forms of entertainment- including pet fights. She already had a suite of outfits picked out for the tournament, each one designed to make her look sharp and intimidating. Who said pets were the only ones with the ability ‘intimidation’?

Notably, Madison had some great defensive techniques up her sleeve already. Well, her metaphorical sleeve. Bats weren’t exactly known for their sleeve possessing capacities. Danger sense was an essential for letting her miss the first blow in battle, which was definitely necessary for a creature so frail. Then stone skin would let her weather any further blows with any luck, granting her a bit more natural armor. Her ability to fly would carry her far above the competition- literally- keeping her out of harm’s way. Finally, screech would stop her opponents dead in their tracks, preventing them from making a move. All of this would give Madison great maneuverability and defense. For a creature with so little stamina and strength, Madison would definitely need to stay on her toes to avoid her opponents. Hopefully, Fiera had provided her the skills for that and she would be fine with what she knew in that vein.

But that only left a distinct gap in Madison’s education in the offensive ability category. If she couldn’t afford to take a hit, then she needed to be able to hit hard to make up for it. And as of right now, she… could not hit hard. Fiera had managed to teach her ‘scratch’ and… that was it. She doubted that Madison would be winning any awards, or any fights for that matter, with such a measly little attack. Even a kitten could hit harder, she was pretty sure. It was fine for getting Madison used to the idea of acting offensively in general, but it wouldn’t do forever. Fiera had to focus on building up her attacking capabilities, that was for sure. But what to teach her next? She had quite a few options on her list, all of them a good idea. And now that Madison was rejuvenated, she could pick any of them.

So what about… wing buff? It was as good an option as any, and Fiera had a lot of options right now, if her list was any indicator. And now that Madison was feeling a lot better, Fiera should take advantage of her being able to fly while she still had the energy for it. It was clear that Madison couldn’t keep it up indefinitely after all, so she’d have limited time to utilize it. Besides, it was a classic move for flight capable pets- if Madison met any other flighted opponents, she would be sure to meet someone else who could use it. Why not use it herself? Though Fiera would need to figure out how to train it… like she said though (or narrated), it was a classic, so how hard could it be? Fiera unzipped her training bag again, looking for anything she could use to teach Madison wing buff.

She skipped over most of the useless stuff. Fiera couldn’t imagine why she even packed most of these things- maybe as a joke to herself that she didn’t find funny now. She was able to find something, though- a small, mesh box, like the kind you might keep butterflies in. It was collapsible, which is how it was able to fit in her bag to start with. Fiera vaguely remembered bringing it along in case Madison got so irritable that she didn’t want to go anywhere with Fiera, and wasn’t playing nice when put on a lead. She didn’t need it for that function now, but the idea she had wasn’t to put Madison in, but to keep her out. She unzipped it and put some candy corn in, not bothering to arrange it carefully while she thought about her plan. Thank goodness she bought the heavy duty version of this cage.

Then, she waited. She wasn’t about to disturb Madison’s nap, after all. Her goal was to teach Madison, not overwork her to the point of injury. This was a much needed recuperation session, after which she would be ready to train some more. After about half an hour, Madison finally woke up, yawning adorably as she did so. Fiera couldn’t help but watch, chin in her hands as the candy corn bat took the time to clean herself, getting rid of the last of the grit from her stone skin training. Fiera let her do so, but soon Madison couldn’t help but notice the small treasure trove of candy corn sitting in front of her… albeit in a mesh cage. It was flexible, but tough- Fiera didn’t think you could get through it even with a knife. Still, it was thin enough for Madison to easily see and smell the delicious candy through the mesh.

Madison crept over to it, clearly curious, but Fiera lifted it up and away from the bat. “Ah ah ah! If you want some of this, you’re going to have to fly!” Fiera said, waggling a finger at her. Madison grumbled, but leapt into the air, quickly taking wing. Fiera watched as she soared around her, before lifting up the cage. “Ok Madison, wing buff!” She said. Madison didn’t know the order, but she knew what she wanted- that delicious candy. She swooped down toward the cage, flapping her wings as hard as she could to get a better look. The force of the breeze actually made Fiera take a step back- perfect! “Good job, Madison! Good wing buff!” She said, and held out a piece of candy corn. It was nothing in comparison to the pile sitting in the cage, but hopefully it would be enough to encourage her.

Madison blinked, and landed on the cage so she could properly accept the treat. Fiera happily fed it to her, giggling at how the bat’s mouth tickled on her hand. Even though Fiera was teaching her to do such violent things, she could also be so gentle. Once she was done, Fiera gently shook her off of the cage, obligating Madison to take flight again. The candy corn bat wheeled around, clearly looking for any weak points on the cage. Once again though, Fiera pointed at the cage. “Come on Madison! Wing buff!” She cried. To give her a bit of extra motivation, she unzipped the front slightly, letting a bit more of the scent of candy corn leak out. Madison dove down, hovering in front of the cage and flapped as hard as she could to get a better look- and a better smell. The force of the wind was so strong, that Fiera could actually see it pushing the zipper open on its own!

“That’s it! Good wing buff!” Fiera said, offering Madison another piece of candy corn. Madison was starting to get the idea now, and landed gently to take it from her. Fly around, flap REALLY hard, get some food. Though Fiera was sure she was thinking about how to get to that pile of candy corn just waiting for her inside. Well, with any luck she would figure out how to get to it yet. When Madison was done, she leapt up into the air once more, ready to try again. Fiera let her orient herself before holding the mesh cage up again, which was now already half unzipped just from the force of the flapping wings. Dexterity was one way to open a zipper, but sometimes brute force was another. By this point, Madison seemed to understand the command as well. “Ready Madison? Wing buff!” Fiera commanded, pointing at the cage.

Fiera closed her eyes to shield them from the wind she knew was coming, turning away slightly and covering her face with one arm. Sure enough, Madison started flapping in full force- if anything even stronger than before, now that they had done this a couple times. Fiera stood back a bit, one foot behind her, taking a more sturdy position to avoid being blown away. Soon though, the wind stopped and Fiera stopped cringing, finally opening her eyes and looking over. As expected, the wing buff had peeled the zipper open the rest of the way by simple force, and Madison was busy shoving herself into the cage, her face already directly in the pile of candy corn. Fiera snorted, and set the cage down. “Good job on that wing buff Madison- you’ve earned this.” She said, and sat back to watch her pet reap the rewards of a job well done.
