Fern almost leapt into the air with happiness on being given an even larger chunk of meat. Fiera checked her cooler. If the pattern held strong, she'd easily be able to feed Fern increasingly larger chunks for increasing slashing strength. This meant that when she finally fed Fern the largest piece in the bucket, she'd be slashing hard enough to easily rend through bone. They'd have to work up to that, however. Fern wasn't quite there yet. Fiera examined the latest slash in the log: it had cut the bark clean off, and Fern's claws had sunk at least half an inch into the wood. If the log was soggy enough, that would be a good enough parallel to flesh. The ideal depth would probably be somewhere around two inches. She turned to Fern cheerfully. "Only one and a half inches left to go, then! You ready, girl?" Fern wagged her tail, not understanding the words but definitely understanding the enthusiasm.

Fiera cracked her knuckles and stood back. Only a little bit further, and they'd be done. "Ready Fern?" She asked. Fern only wagged her tail in response. "Rend!" Fern immediately turned to the log, raising a paw. It came down fast, this time tearing a big chunk out of the wood further down. The bark was peeled clean off, and sharp claws bit deep into old wood. If there was any bugs living in there? They weren't anymore. Fiera giggled with glee, admiring the damage. Definitely an inch deep. They were so close! "Fern, what a good job! What a good girl!" Fern practically wiggled with happiness at the phrase, sticking tight to Fiera as she went through the cooler. Fiera dragged out the second to last chunk, and held it over Fern's head. She opened her mouth to give praise before dropping it- only for the rakai to leap up and grab it right out of her hand.

Ok, that was fair. They were both excited- it would make sense that Fern was getting ahead of herself as much as Fiera was. That last slash was almost perfect. Fiera could practically taste the success on her tongue. She leaned down, and got out the last chunk of meat- it was huge, the size of a baseball. Fern licked her chops audibly. Fiera held it up, out of her reach. Motivation, she thought. "Ready Fern? Last time! Rend!" Without any hesitation, Fern leapt forward faster and harder than ever before. With a single flick of the leg, a massive chunk was torn from the log- easily three inches in depth. "HhhYES!" Fiera shrieked, throwing the meat into the air. Fern leapt up, and ran over to where it land, and began gnawing pieces off. Fiera didn't care. She did it! Well, they both had. After Fern finished her snack, they practiced a bit more, weaning Fern off the treats slowly. However, Fiera knew that regardless of what happened next, at least she knew that Fern could defend herself. And maybe, in a pinch, she could look after Fiera too.

A quick one two jump, and Lunara was back on her branch. The yumenokei seemed a little nervous this time, perhaps knowing that Fiera would walk away. She always seemed rather clever like that. Fiera had heard that yumenokei were intelligent creatures, and Lunara seemed to be no exception. It made training a little easier knowing she'd pick things up fast, but it made bed time a lot harder. She was difficult to trick, after all. After getting Lunara up in the tree, Fiera instead stood right beneath her. "Ok, Lunara... come!" She said, holding her arms open. Bunching up her hind legs after a moment's hesitation, Lunara bounced off the branch. Her fall, however, was feather slow in that characteristic gravity defying yumenokei way. She drifted downward gently into Fiera's arms, just like she wanted. (Continuing "Glide") Fiera: 6 Lunara: Lv. 3.3/ Lo. 5.3 Glide 3

Lunara's drift downward was exactly what Fiera wanted. She knew that yumenokei had a natural ability to glide around, related to their ethereal nature. But being raised by humans, Lunara never really got the opportunity to learn that. As a result, if Fiera was too far away, she'd think she was going to fall, and so would try and jump to Fiera's location instead of just drifting. By starting out directly beneath her and backing away, Fiera could slowly but surely teach her to glide. Each time, Lunara would be forced to adjust just a bit further, and would, with any luck, glide to her owner instead of just jumping. After giving her a scritch on the head and telling her she was a good girl, Fiera tossed Lunara back up into the tree. Well, gently. It was more lifting her arm up and letting Lunara jump up on her own.

This time, as Lunara got settled in the tree, Fiera shifted just a little bit back. She was less than a foot away from where she started, but small progress was good progress. The goal was that Lunara wouldn't realize how far away she had gotten until it was too late. And by "too late" Fiera meant "she was already gliding", like when you let go of a child's bike and they don't realize that they're the ones pedalling until they've been doing so for thirty or so feet. "Ok Lunara, come!" Fiera called up to the branch, and down came Lunara, like a leaf on the wind. If Fiera wasn't watching her, she'd never realize that she had landed in her arms. Yumenokei were so naturally light, one of them landing on you was like having a breeze drift across you, or maybe having a butterfly land on your shoulder.

"Good girl, Lunara! Good glide!" She said, emphasizing the last word. She knew she needed to transition from "come" to "glide" when doing this trick. She didn't want to say "Come" only to have to wait five minutes because Lunara was busy blowing around in the wind elegantly. "We're going to have you glide again, ok?" She said cheerfully to the yumenokei. A few seconds later, Lunara was launched back into the tree. Fiera stood back, shielding her eyes from the sun to make sure her pet had gotten settled. Specifically, she stood back just a liiiittle further than before. "Lunara, glide!" She said. Lunara didn't respond, tilting her head. "Glide!" Again, no response. Fiera sighed. Ok, they'd get there. "Lunara, come!" She said again, and sure enough, the rabbitlike creature came gliding down out of the tree again. Once settled in Fiera's arms, she had a little kiss placed upon her head.

She followed that up with an immediate "Good glide, Lunara!" Fiera knew she had to keep reiterating that word- connecting it to the gliding was just as important as the action, if she was ever to get Lunara to do it on command. She was lucky that Lunara was so clever- it would take a lesser pet forever, if at all, to pick this stuff up so quickly. Fiera had heard that some pets in the labs were even completely sentient, and capable of learning human speech and even reading! But... those rumors, couldn't be true, right? Fiera shook her head. There was a time and a place to think about such things. And, as she walked over to the tree, she knew that now was neither that time nor that place. Lunara elegantly leapt up the tree after being asked, arcing up the trunk in two bounds, before settling in an upper branch, ready to try again.

Fiera stepped back even further- by now, she was about a yard away from where she was originally, right under Lunara. She held her arms open. "Ok Lunara- glide!" She said. Lunara almost leapt... but then stopped, as if she wasn't sure that that was what Fiera wanted. "No, no! Good girl! Glide!" But still, Lunara stayed stuck fast to her branch. Fiera sighed. She was so close, but still not quite there. "Lunara...come!" She said, a bit disappointed. Still though, Lunara leapt off the branch, as elegant as usual, and glided down. This time though, she landed gracefully on Fiera's shoulder instead of in her arms. It would appear she knew the drill well enough to at least switch up where she landed. Fiera chuckled, and patted her on the head. "Good glide, Lunara." As she strode back to the tree, she really hoped Lunara would understand the command soon...

"Let's try this again, eh Lunara?" Fiera chided gently. She held her arm up to the tree. "Ready? Leap!" Right on command, Lunara gracefully ran off of Fiera's shoulder, up her arm, and launched off her hand, landing effortlessly in the boughs of the tree. Fiera casually clapped her hands at the trick while backing up, and Lunara waggled her ears happily in response. Finally, Fiera stopped, about 6 feet away now. "Ready now, Lunara? Glide!" Lunara's legs bunched up, but she hesitated, and Fiera sighed internally. She wondered if Lunara was ever going to get the hang of that command, but at that moment, Lunara decided to launch off, slowly gliding down to Fiera. She almost overshot, but Fiera managed to catch the Yumenokei mid-air, pulling her into a hug. "Oh, good GIRL, Lunara! Excellent glide, I'm so happy!" She squealed, spinning around. Lunara wiggled out of Fiera's arms and back onto her shoulder, seemingly out of embarrassment, but didn't run away entirely. Perhaps there was some part of her that appreciated the praise, however overwrought...

"Ok, Lunara, one more time!" Fiera said gleefully. FINALLY Lunara had understood the command "glide". Now all that was left was to get some actual distance on the action! She knew Lunara was perfectly capable of gliding significant distance- it was in her genes after all. It was just a manner of getting Lunara to be confident enough in herself too. Fiera was under the impression that she was a cheerful and encouraging coach, the kind you'd see in movies. While the truth might not have been so glamorous, it certainly got the job done. Once Lunara was back in the tree, Fiera prepared herself, reaching ten full feet away- too far for Lunara to jump, but if she used her powers, easily enough to glide. "Ready Lunara?" She said, calling into the tree. She couldn't actually see the yumenokei by this point, but it was the thought that counted. "Glide!" She shouted, holding open her arms. She heard a rustle of leaves in the tree... and then out came Lunara, sailing toward her. After what seemed like an eternity, she finally landed on Fiera's shoulder again, with only a little scrabbling for purchase. Fiera however, immediately swept her up, laughing all the way.

After a long day, the sun had finally set. Fiera was sitting under the same tree she had used to teach Lunara how to glide, and was now trying to teach Lunara something... quite a bit harder. Any idiot could "come" or recognize their name, or jump out of a tree... but what Fiera was going to try and teach Lunara today was something that Fiera couldn't do even if she tried. She had heard that some creatures of the labs could do things beyond the capabilities of science. An inherent sort of magic, she had heard. While she doubted it was so inexplicable, Fiera HAD seen videos of yumenokei doing strange things... and with any luck, she'd teach Lunara to do something similar tonight. It wouldn't be easy, but she had heard that yumenokei were tied to the moon. The moon was half full tonight, apparently the phase that Lunara's breed was linked to. With any luck, it would make this go easier.

Honestly, it had stumped Fiera for a long time on how to teach "Crescent of Light". She had read that it was supposed to be a streak of dazzling light, drawn in crescent form, that would fly out and strike opponents, cutting through them like a blade before fizzling out. Even the description was bizarre to her. There was nothing like that at home- she had trouble even visualizing it. But then, she found something at the store that she thought might help. She got them out now, in front of Lunara. A set of sparklers, commonly used during celebrations where one usually sets off fireworks. Usually, they were childrens toys, but the streaks of light they left and the sharp, fizzling nature of them gave Fiera a great idea. If she couldn't set an example for Lunara with magic powers of her own, she'd use the next best thing- science! And small explosives.

She fumbled through the outer pockets of her bag for the lighter. Where did she stick it? Lunara tilted her head, looking at Fiera curiously. She obviously knew something was going to happen- Fiera only brought her to the park when she learned something new- but what, she couldn't fathom yet. Finally, Fiera dug the lighter out, holding it aloft with victory. "There we go!" She said. "Knew I didn't forget it!" She brought it down, flicking the switch a few times. As she did; "Ok, watch closely, Lunara. This one's going to be a little... abstract." Fiera had also done better research for treats this time- apparently yumenokei fed on the 'creative energy' of artists. Hopefully this would be a creative enough solution that Lunara would get the picture. However, in a pinch, apparently they also ate 'mochi'- a treat not found in Fiera's homeland, but was relatively common here.

Between the improved treats and the creative energy, hopefully Fiera would be able to coax Lunara into working some literal magic tonight. Finally, the lighter caught, illuminating Lunara, Fiera, and the base of the tree in a tiny pool of orange light. Fiera's face was something that could probably be described as a mix of "mischevious" and "devious" but that was par the course for her. Lunara on the other hand, managed to look somewhat excited, even without having much of a face to read. It was likely the moonlight easing her mind. "Ok Lunara," Fiera said, lowering the lighter to her first sparkler. "Today we're going to be learning... crescent." She said. As the final word left her lips, the sparkler lit up. It replaced the lighter's flame with something a lot less consistent, but more interesting and vibrant. Fiera grinned at her Yumenokei. "Are you ready?" She said.
