Finally, he seemed to be paying attention. Algol didn't seem to think before he acted, but that could be mitigated by just spending a bit of time with him. Fiera decided to give the trick 'no' one more try. She opened the trusty cooler and took out one more chunk of meat, letting Algol see it. His whole body wiggled with excitement and he scrabbled at the wood, hissing quietly and opening his mouth, clearly ready for it. She set it down, just up the root, and pointed at it. "No." She said, looking directly at him, before withdrawing her hand. He kept wiggling but didn't move, instead looking between Fiera and the treat, cheeping softly. Finally, Fiera smiled and said "Good boy!" Go ahead! He screeched quietly, and lunged at the meat, quickly gobbling it down. Fiera was impressed with him! Impatient... but not intransigent. What a good boy.

The next trick Fiera wanted to teach Algol was a classic, and one that she thought the sarane whelp was already pretty well cut out for. 'Come' was a staple in keeping pets under control, and for a sarane that was especially important. Thankfully, Algol was eager (if a little air headed) and already had tendencies to stick around Fiera, even if it was just because he thought she was going to give him food. First, she let him get some distance on her, leaning against the tree root they were using to train 'no' earlier. She watched as he wandered further and further away, whether it was by chasing bugs or digging through leaves. It wasn't difficult for the whelp to find things to do, being a fountain of youthful energy. After he got about twenty feet away, she dragged the treat cooler closer to her and stood up.

She brushed the leaves off her pants, sending them fluttering back down to the forest floor. At least this place was less dirty than the other spots she had trained in. It had taken her ages to get the dirt out of her last pair of pants. Getting back to work, Fiera cupped her hands around her mouth. "Algol!" She called, and the brown sarane whelp lifted his head curiously. "Come!" She said, letting the word echo through the ravine, bouncing off the dirt walls. He tilted his head... and went right back to fighting an exposed root he had found, rolling around adorably. Yeah, she knew that probably wasn't going to work, but at least he was going to get used to that word real soon, and hopefully connect it with what they were going to do next. She crouched down again next to the cooler and cracked it open.

She slipped a couple of treats into a plastic baggie she had crumpled up in her pocket. This trick involved a lot of moving around, so she didn't want to be stuck near the cooler every time she wanted to give Algol a treat. She sealed it up and put it back in her pocket before taking just one more out of the cooler, sealing it fast behind it. "Algol!" She called again as she rose up smoothly. She held up the last treat she got out. "Come here!" The response from the sarane hatchling was enthusiastic and immediate, and she had to strafe out of the way just to avoid being bowled over by the whelp. "Woah, calm down!" She laughed. "Good boy though, Algol! Good come!" She praised, and tossed the meat up in the air. Algol had caught it before it even hit the ground, smacking his jaws ravenously.

This was going well. Algol now had an action (coming to Fiera) to match with the word ('come'). Fiera thought that things were going well- all she had to do now was hammer it in a bit further with some repetition, and then try it without the treats just to make sure he got the idea. She ran backwards as Algol played with his food (something to be discouraged... but that could come later), looking over one shoulder as she jogged. When she was sure she had gotten enough distance, she waited until Algol was done eating before she cracked open the plastic baggie. "Algol! Come!" She said quickly, as the scent of meat had already started him off running, galloping in that clumsy way that babies do. He was like a very sharp, toothy puppy. By the time he reached her, she already had a treat waiting for him.

"Good boy, Algol!" Fiera laughed as Algol ate the meat right out of her hand, chirping loudly. Others might find the sight sort of scary, what with how sharp Algol's body was, but Fiera had seen tougher and meaner things. To her, this behavior was just charming. She finally let go as he took the whole chunk in however, and wiped her hand off with a paper towel in the other pocket. Time for the final test, she thought as she walked away. A few feet later, she was in position. "Ok Algol, ready?" She shouted, getting the sarane's attention. "Come!" She said, without any treats in hand. Algol tilted his head as if confused... and trotted right on over to her! Fiera was there to meet him with endless praise and head scritches. He was, after all, a very good boy, who was very good at coming when called.

Just one more basic trick to train, Fiera thought with satisfaction. She had gotten Algol to come to her when called, but convincing him to stay put would be a horse of a different color. Hopefully though, repetition would be enough to hammer it into his skull. Or, perhaps, a rope. She had brought a short rope with her to the training session today. She knew that Algol was just a baby, so she didn't bring anything too strong, as it wasn't necessary, or too rough, as she didn't want to actually hurt him. Instead, the length she brought with her was only about ten feet long, white in color and silky in texture, like sort you use in boating. With any luck, she'd be able to use it to tie Algol to a root and back away from him with a treat, while praising him for "staying". Then, if all went well, he'd know he was meant to hold still when she said stay.

She crept up on Algol, watching his body language carefully. Didn't want to get bitten after all. However, the sarane hatchling didn't seem upset by the rope in the slightest. Instead, he thought Fiera was playing some odd game, and he leapt around her while cheeping and fluttering his wings. Fiera thought that that was absolutely adorable of course, but it was pretty much the opposite of what she was trying to get him to do right now. Instead, she tied the rope in a loop and tried to get it around his head, eventually managing to get him to run right through it. Sighing with relief, she tightened the loop enough that he could breathe but not escape. Then, she tied the other end around a tree root that looped out of the ground, ensuring that he couldn't pull out that end of it. Finally, she stepped back to admire her work.

Algol didn't seem bothered by the rope in the slightest, and instead just looked at Fiera with his usual wide eyed gaze. She sighed, and stepped back a bit, making sure she was beyond the range of the length of rope. Finally, she lifted up the baggie of meat. "Algol... stay." She said, lowering the bag and cracking it open. Algol stopped for a minute, sniffing the air, and immediately ran down the length of the rope, straining at the end. "Stay. Staaaay." She said, watching him, waiting for him to stop struggling, at which point she'd consider the trick completed. She repeated herself for a few minutes until he finally seemed to get tired and sat down. "Good boy!" She cooed, tossing him a lump of meat. He leapt back up and onto it, all thoughts of the rope stopping him being chased from his mind.

Algol looked at her as he chewed, and she could tell there were cogs turning behind his eyes. He was a clever boy, when he tried. It was just a matter of getting this young, dumb creature to try. Still, all that would take was Fiera working with him a bit longer. She opened the plastic bag again, and he was already straining at the lead, growl-groaning quietly, his little front legs working at thin air as if that would reel Fiera in closer. "Algol..." She chided gently. "Stay." She waited even longer than last time, leaving the idea of a treat hanging in the air. Quietly, Algol licked his lips and groaned to himself, before sitting down like before. Fiera smiled- he did it a lot quicker that time! She tossed him the meat and went to untie him. If she was lucky, he'd do the same thing, but without needing to be restrained.

Soon, Algol had been freed from the silky rope, and it had been safely wrapped back up and placed in her bag. Hopefully she wouldn't need it again any time soon. Algol seemed happy to be free, tearing around in circles across the ravine and kicking up leaves into the air. Fiera couldn't help but chuckle at the sight, but she knew they had to keep working. She didn't want him to forget what he had learned, after all! While he was distracted though, she took the opportunity to back up a bit. "Algol... stay!" She said, directed at the sarane. He slowed down and stopped, looking at her as she backed away. She bit her lip. So far so good... she got out a piece of meat. Algol started and hopped back up to his feet. "Staaaay." She reiterated, holding a hand out. Algol shivered with excitement... but didn't move. Fiera laughed; what great effort was required! "Ok, fine then." She chuckled. "Good boy!" She said, and tossed him his final treat.

Once again, Fiera found herself in the wide fields of the public park. Instead of the battle training she did before however, today’s task was of a more gentle nature. There was, of all things, a cute contest coming up, and Fiera didn’t quite have anything that fit. She had just used Lunara, her Gengetsu yumenokei in the last beauty contest, and doubted she’d be allowed to reenter with her. Zazzle, her inkrum, was a favorite of hers, but she doubted the judges would feel the same way about his strange appearance. Desert and Fern were her mount and a battle pet respectively...Leaving the humanish without anything good to enter in the contest. Which is what led her to Henri. Henri was a jolly bird- a winter holiday creature apparently, and was just about the cutest thing she’d ever seen. He had the voice of a songbird, the body of a kitten, and the personality (and coordination) of a puppy. Fiera 1 Henri Lv. 0.1/ Lo. 2.1 Name: 1

She looked over as he galloped across the grass, cheeping loudly. He was certainly enthusiastic, she thought as she set her bag down next to a nearby stump. They had stopped in a area with the occasional tree stump and very tall grass- which Henri was clearly enjoying as he chirped and dove through it, occasionally breaching the top like a jumping fish. That is, if fish had beaks and bright red fur. “Henri!” Fiera called, trying to get his attention. He’d need to learn to listen to her if they were going to make any sort of progress. Teaching a pet their name was one of the most important tricks out there as a result. Of course, being brand new to the world and to her, he gave no response. This grassy area was simply too fun, and he didn’t know Fiera well enough to want to listen to her.

Fiera tried a couple more times to call him, but as expected, there was no response. He simply kept jumping around in the grass. For all he knew or cared, she was just another bird singing another song. Thankfully, she had brought a “weapon” of sorts to help. Fiera dug around in her bag and brought out a mason jar. Inside, it was filled to the brim with seeds. Maybe not the healthiest to feed him all the time, but they would do just fine as treats to motivate him. She shook it a couple times. “Henri!” She said again. The new, unusual noise from the jar seemed to finally catch his attention, and he came prancing over. “Good boy, Henri!” She said, and popped open the lid of the jar, stuffing her hand inside. He tilted his head curiously, then cheeped with surprise and joy as he was showered in seeds.

“Yeah, that’s right!” Fiera said cheerfully as Henri rolled around in his treats, nearly too excited to eat. “And there’s more where that came from, so long as you’re good!” Once Henri has finally collected himself, finished his treats, and stood up, Fiera decided to try again. “Hey, buddy!” She said, waiting to see if he’d respond. Henri’s head almost immediately snapped up, and he trotted over for treats. Unfortunately, that wasn’t what Fiera was trying to accomplish- she needed him to respond to his name, not just any old word. So when he came over, the treat jar was shut fast. He sat down expectantly for a moment, but soon got bored and wandered off. Time for some repetition-to hammer in that it was his name she wanted a response for. “Henri!” She called, and he looked up, more hesitantly than before. However, that got him a few more treats tossed his way.
